1 Trinity Sunday May 27, 2018

2 Preparing for worship Today is Trinity Sunday on the church calendar, so of course we will sing Holy, Holy, Holy, which is No. 1 in our hymnal and most hymnals. Ever wonder why that is? Perhaps this beloved hymn is No. 1 in our hearts and hymnals because of its succinct doctrinal statement about the persons of God we call the Trinity. If you ve got to begin your theology somewhere, that s a good start. The British poet laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson called Holy, Holy, Holy the world s greatest hymn. The hymn has appeared in more than 1,200 American hymnals alone, not to mention translations around the world. It has been sung in the United States since The words were penned in the early 19th century by Reginald Heber, an Anglican priest who was sent to India as the bishop of Calcutta before his untimely death from sun stroke after preaching to a large outdoor crowd. He had written this hymn for use on Trinity Sunday, eight weeks after Easter. Thus the hymn is Trinitarian in structure, affirming Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But there s another clever use of threes in the hymn as well. In addition to the use of the word holy in triplet form, God is described in triplets as well: holy, merciful and mighty, perfect in power, in love and purity, worshiped by saints, cherubim and seraphim, and praised in earth and sky and sea. The tune, Nicaea, was written specifically for this text by John Dykes, one of England s leading church musicians of the 19th century. Nicaea is named for the Council of Nicaea, held in Asia Minor in 325 A.D., when the doctrine of the Trinity was examined and held to be a true and essential doctrine of the Christian faith. One of the other reasons this hymn has endured as a favorite of the church through ever-changing times and tastes is that it is singable. That s due in part to Dykes, the tune s author, even though he was part of a stuffy-sounding group called The Oxford Movement, with high church tendencies but committed to a revitalization of Anglican worship. Dykes penned 300 singable tunes for England s hymn writers, quite a feat. Heber, too, was committed to congregational singing. He was concerned about the sorry state of psalm singing in the church at the time, which motivated him to write and collect enough fresh hymns to create a new hymnal organized around the church year a collection published only after his untimely death. One of the reasons Wilshire has remained committed to traditional hymnody in worship is to keep us in the tradition of the church throughout the ages. This hymn has stood the test of time, transcends lesser doctrinal disputes and is built upon Scripture. As you sing this morning, understand that you are joining the saints across time in declaring a foundational truth of our faith, that God is three persons, blessed Trinity. 3 May 27, :30 and 11:00 a.m. Trinity Sunday Chiming of the Hour The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God. In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude Medley of Praise McKechnie Carillon Ringers Call to Worship Sanctus Hosanna Duruflé/Capps Nova Michael Capps, director; Bill Jernberg, accompanist Sanctus, Dominum Deus sabaoth, pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Opening Sentences Carrie Donaldson / Harper McKenzie We gather today to worship the mystery of the Trinity, one God in three persons. On this Trinity Sunday, we acknowledge that we neither see nor understand all there is to know about God. We find joy and hope in the mystery of One who is beyond comprehension. May the love of God, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth even now. We sing because we cannot be silent. +Hymn 575 Redeemed ada Greeting to Worshipers Mark Wingfield Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate later in the service. We would love to know you were here today. Prayer concerns will be received and prayed for this week when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate. *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. 4 Epistle Reading Romans 8:12 17 Sarah Stafford / Travis Nadalini So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayers of the People Mark Eggert / Heather Mustain Anthem Prayer for the Gifts Lange Nova Creator, in your goodness, grant us the mind to comprehend you, The vision to discern you, and the pow r of reason to be grateful. Creator, in your kindness, endow us with the diligence to seek you, The wisdom to find you and the spirit to apprehend you. Creator, in your graciousness, bestow on us the heart to think on you And the ears to hear, and the eyes to see, and the voices to sing of you. Creator, in your mercy, give to us the words that would please you, The patience to wait for you, and the strength of soul to long for you: And grant us a perfect end; your holy presence. Amen. Generosity Testimony Rob Banta / Debbie Meripolski +Hymn 7 Worthy of Worship judson Giving of Tithes and Offerings When you give to Wilshire s Unified Budget, you enable a host of summer ministries that bring hundreds of people into our building and send our members out to serve hundreds away from our building. From Vacation Bible School to youth camp to Food on the Move and beyond, your faithful giving (even while traveling) keeps the witness of the church going strong. Offertory Blessed Assurance arr. 5 +Offertory Response old 100th Our God is making all things new, a promise that we know is true. Through eyes of faith we long to see a love-transformed community. A place where truth and justice reign and healing triumphs over pain, Where all have dignity and worth and peace is passed throughout the earth. LeAnn Hampton Old Testament Reading Isaiah 6:1 8 Pam Banta / Janell Mirochna In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts! Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And I said, Here am I; send me! This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Message * Can You Hear Me Now? Jakob Topper ** From Your Lips to God s Ear Matt Dodrill +Hymn 1 Holy, Holy, Holy nicaea Sharing of Decisions Benediction Postlude Holy, Holy, Holy arr. If you are a guest with us today, we welcome you warmly to our congregation. We would like to get to know you and tell you more about our church. Please take a Response Card from the pew rack, fill it out and place it in the offering plate when it comes by. 5

10 Five reasons to register for VBS now 1. It s going to be cool. Imagine Community Hall turned into a biblical marketplace filled with shops, artisans, food and crafts that give kids hands-on understanding of Bible stories as they come to life. 2. Everyone can participate. Because this year s VBS is at night, it s accessible to preschoolers and children with two working parents as well as children of single parents and all households. 3. It s only three days. Rather than taking up an entire week and competing with other summer day camps, this year s VBS runs Sunday night through Tuesday night only. 4. You ll want to bring a friend. Wilshire s VBS is the ideal event for your children to bring their friends along, because there s room for everyone. 5. Kids will have fun learning Bible truths. Children will join their tribe as they visit the marketplace, worship and learn about turning tough times into opportunities to trust God and live courageously. Register today online at wilshirebc.org/registration. VBS is open to preschool children who will have completed a 3-year-old preschool class by June 10 through children who will have just completed sixth grade. Sunday, June 10 Monday, June 11 Tuesday, June 12 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. nightly 10
