2 Preparing for worship In Texas, we do not always experience distinct markers for each season. Fall can morph into a mild winter, and a hot springtime can lead right into an even hotter summer. The bitter cold we ve experienced as we began this year has been unusual, welcome to some and not so much for others. The changing weather is a reminder that life is full of its own seasons and rhythms. I have friends who are pregnant, new parents, sending their firstborn to college and one who just buried her sister after a tragic death. Seasons of life can arrive gradually or extremely abruptly. I m attempting to embrace the season of life I am currently in. As a new year is under way, I m planning and marking my calendar but also trying to simply embrace where I am and where my family is. It is a daily intention for me to be present in the moment and movement of each day. I am prepared for the weather, and my calendar is up to date, but I am also embracing that each moment is a part of my story, my journey. As a family of faith, what will our story look like this year? It may be hard for you to praise the Lord because of your current season of life. Or you may bounce out of bed and find it easy to sing and thank God. In the book Messy Spirituality, Mike Yaconelli writes about how God meets us where we are and transforms us in the midst of a messy and unpredictable life. Jesus understood unfinishedness very well, which is why he was comfortable leaving 11 unfinished disciples. When he died, the disciples were confused, depressed, afraid and doubtful. They faced a lifetime of finishing, just like you and me. Messy spirituality not only reminds us that we will always be a work in progress but it also reminds us that the unfinished life is a lot more spiritual than we imagined. We bring all of who we are today. In this safe place this morning may you rest in your season. May you lean in to where you are in life and know that God meets you here today. And Jesus said to them, Follow me and I will make you fish for people. And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets.
