2 Front pew Another Voice The front pew at church is a sacred place. Most Sunday mornings, youth sit in the front center pew, which offers a great visual of the future of the church. And on the first Sundays of the month, deacons occupy the front pews as they wait to serve the Lord s Supper, a visual reminder of those who have been called out for service. But it is also the front pew where families sit during funerals and memorial services. These are the reserved seats of honor for those who are grieving deep losses. And it is in this pew that sorrow meets the proclamation of resurrection hope. At weddings, family members also occupy the front pew, but for happier reasons. The parents of the bride and the parents of the groom usually sit front and center so they have the best view of the ceremony. And so it is from this pew that joys are celebrated. When people walk the aisle to join the church, to profess faith in Jesus Christ or to make known some other commitment of faith, they occupy the front pew as they await introduction to the congregation. In these moments, the front pew becomes the place of welcome and new beginnings. The same is true for the side front pew on days we have baby dedications. It is here that extended families gather to celebrate the gift of new life and to make promises to raise a child in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. In other venues, people seek out the front-row seats because they are prime locations to see and to be seen. But at church, having a front-row seat means something much different: service, learning, grieving, joy, goodbyes and new beginnings. It is here on these three pews left, center and right that the paths of life mix and mingle and remind us that the church is a refuge for all seasons of life. When he came home the first Sunday, he said he had found a church, she recalled. We went together the next Sunday to Wilshire. By the end of the service we knew that Wilshire was the church for us. When God tells you something, he speaks pretty loudly, she said. We ve been at Wilshire for 42 years now. Besides the worship service, the Bible teaching was one of the main things that drew us to Wilshire, Carol added. When the Smiths first joined, they were under the guidance of Clairene and Fred Herold as they became active in working and serving. Now they are members of Charlie s Angels Class. The Smiths also have taught a couples class, and over the years she has taught Vacation Bible School, a junior high Sunday School class and older classes. She and three other teachers are now leading the Friendship Class for senior adults. She has sung second soprano in New Song since the beginning 10 years ago, and the Smiths are active in Wilshire Adventurers. Born in Dallas, Carol grew up participating in Brownies and Girl Scouts. My mother was a Brownie leader, and completing the assignments for awards, patches and pins gave me the incentive to work harder to succeed. However, music was her favorite activity. In the second grade I sang a solo during the presentation of the Christmas story, she said. I sang my first real solo in sixth grade, and after that I sang in every choral group I could. Those experiences brought me out of my shell, as I was very shy. Carol took piano lessons for 10 years and accompanied her junior high orchestra. It I Am Wilshire Carol Smith was a delightful experience, and on one program I played a duet with the orchestra, she said. That was such a challenge. At Woodrow Wilson High School she had to choose between band and choir. I chose band, where I played flute, because ours was one of the first marching bands that girls could participate in, she explained. Carol had been doublepromoted twice, so when she graduated in January 1952, she was just 16. I was too young to enter the work world, so my father suggested that I go to college, she said. I went to Texas Woman s University and lived in the dorm with a senior roommate. It was a wonderful experience, and I made all A s. That summer I worked at Texas Instruments, where my father was an accountant, she said. I was placed in inventory control, where I worked with tiny figures. The people were very good to me, but the best part was the wonderful relationship I developed with my father by riding to and from work with him. That fall I transferred to Texas Tech University because it was a bigger school and because a boyfriend from high school was there, Carol said. I majored in accounting. I thought I would be good at it because my father was. Soon discovering that accounting was not her calling, she returned to Dallas after one semester and first worked at a shoe store. I left when buying shoes began to eat up my profits, she said. After brief stays elsewhere, she began a long career with Dr Pepper in 1958, starting as a secretary in the advertising department. In 1964, after her third child was born, Carol ended her marriage to her first husband. Alice, her daughter from this marriage, is a nurse practitioner in Mesquite. One son, Mark, is a retired auto mechanic in Alabama; her other son, Tommy, works in computer science in Dallas. She and her second husband, Garland, technically met as preschoolers at Pleasant Grove Christian Church. When she was 8, her family returned to Dallas and went to Mount Auburn Christian Church and then East Dallas Christian Church. When she was an adult, the choir director asked her to teach the first- and secondgrade choir. It was a paid position, and I did that for several years, she said. The Smiths became reacquainted when both sang in the choir, and they were married in We ve had a wonderful marriage, she said. We have two children. Jennifer teaches at a school in Plano for children with disabilities, and Chris is in the construction business in Dallas. We have 11 grandchildren. Right after Garland and I were married, we began taking camping trips with the children and their friends, as we had a tent that slept eight, Carol said. When Jennifer was in preschool, I went to work part time at Dr Pepper. One benefit was that my boss paid for employees to take trips to places such as Hawaii and California. When I retired in 2003, I was the full-time secretary to the president and CEO. When he opened his own office, he asked me to run it. 5
