Fourth Sunday in Advent December 18, 2016

Preparing for worship This morning we hear selections from one of the best-known pieces of choral literature in history, Messiah by George Frederick Handel. We re only hearing selections because the entire work runs more than two hours. Give credit for the beautiful music to Handel, but take a moment to consider the influence of someone else too. William Jennens, a frequent contributor of musical texts to Handel, crafted the text, or libretto, entirely from the King James Version of Scripture. Jennens had an agenda, and he wanted to tap Handel s musical skills to advance that agenda. Jennens intended to counter a controversial theology of the day known as Deism. Deists favored rational thought over spiritual thought and specifically rejected the notion of revelation. They challenged the idea that the Old Testament could prophesy Jesus divinity, incarnation and resurrection. Jennens set out to prove them wrong by weaving Old Testament prophecies with New Testament fulfillments. Scholarly research has shown that many of the specific texts Jennens chose for Messiah are the very ones anti-deists used in defense of their faith in this era. Jennens drew from 79 Scripture passages in both the Old and New Testaments to create the libretto. He interspersed Scripture to tell a story unlike the way it would be read straight from the Bible. And unlike the way we hear the work today, the oratorio was written as an Easter pageant. It is a passion play, not a Christmas cantata. In its fullness, Messiah is the story of the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus. Christmas performances are believed to have begun in 1791, 50 years after the oratorio s composition. Despite its title, neither the Messiah s name or voice are heard within the work. And although pulled entirely from Scripture, the libretto skips biblical passages describing the Messiah s birth. The music of Messiah was composed in a 22-day period, from August 22 to September 12, This greatly aggravated Jennens, who thought Handel did not take adequate time to do justice to the profound text. Jennens complained bitterly about this, both to Handel and to others. Upon first hearing the oratorio, Jennens was deeply disappointed. Numerous stories are told of unique and mysterious things happening during the scoring of Messiah. Most of these bear no historical support. For example, there is no historical evidence that Handel was ill during the composition of Messiah and was miraculously cured upon writing the Hallelujah chorus. Over time, the combination of Jennens text and Handel s music has had a mysterious and unique effect upon many people, however. So much so that we modern Christians take for granted the theological point that was so important to Jennens. We accept the idea that Jesus birth in Bethlehem was, indeed, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. Because of Handel and Jennens, we easily associate the prophecies of Isaiah with the birth of the Messiah and consider Jesus to be the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 4 Recitative Comfort Ye My People Handel Joe Whitenton, tenor Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people, saith your God; Speak comfortably to Jerusalem; and cry unto her, That her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned. The voice of him that crieth in the wildnerness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, Make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Isaiah 40:1-3 Air Every Valley Shall Be Exalted Handel Joe Whitenton, tenor Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill made low; The crooked straight, and the rough places plain. Isaiah 40:4 Chorus And the Glory of the Lord Handel Sanctuary Choir And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. Isaiah 40:5 Reading Malachi 3:1-3 Garrett Woodbury / Ava McClung See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner s fire and like fullers soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Prayers of the People Reading Isaiah 7:10-16 Kevin Sinclair / Timothy Peoples Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Jason Woodbury / Shawn Ashmore Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted. 4

Chorus O Thou That Tellest Handel Sanctuary Choir O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, good tidings to Jerusalem, Arise, arise, say unto the cities of Judah, "Behold your God!" Behold, the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. Isaiah 40:9; 60:1 Meditation Reading Isaiah 60:2,3; 9:2 George Mason Jason Woodbury / Shawn Ashmore For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. Chorus For Unto Us a Child Is Born Handel Sanctuary Choir For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, And the government shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 Giving of Tithes and Offerings When you give to Wilshire s Unified Budget, you support the Gaston Christian Center, which has turned a single church s property into a home for seven congregations and multiple faith-based ministries all under one roof in North Dallas. Offertory Pastoral Symphony Handel Orchestra Recitatives There Were Shepherds - And Lo, the Angel - And the Angel - And Suddenly Misty Birtcher, soprano Handel There were shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flocks by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, And the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, fear not; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying... Luke 2:8-13 5

Chorus Glory to God Handel Sanctuary Choir Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, good will toward men. Luke 2:14 Reading Zechariah 9:9, 10 Paula Woodbury / Alison Ashmore Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. Air He Shall Feed His Flock Like a Shepherd Handel Misty Birtcher, soprano He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, And he shall gather the lambs with his arm and carry them in his bosom, And gently lead those that are with young. +Gospel Reading Matthew 1:18-25 Garrett Woodbury / Ava McClung Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means, God is with us. When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Meditation George Mason +Hymn of Commitment 127 Hark! The Herald Angels Sing mendelssohn Welcome to New Members George Mason 6

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations... MATTHEW 28:19 OFFERING FOR GLOBAL MISSIONS Global Poverty Cooperative Baptists seek sustainable responses to systems of poverty that devalue life and diminish the image of God. Global Migration Cooperative Baptists extend hope and hospitality to those who are driven by circumstances or drawn by opportunity away from their homes. Your gifts to the Offering for Global Missions support the long-term presence of CBF field personnel meeting needs in the following contexts: Global Church Cooperative Baptists befriend Christians from around the world to share and receive gifts and to engage in God s mission together through worship, fellowship, education and service. 8

After more than two decades of Christian witness in 30 countries, CBF stands convinced that there are no shortcuts to making disciples of all nations. Whether translating the Bible into a previously unwritten language, educating Chinese lay leaders and pastors to build the Church and to spread the Gospel, or resurrecting hope in rural America, the transformation we seek requires a patient, incarnational witness with others. 31% MISSION PROGRAMMING Ministries, special projects, travel 69% MISSION PRESENCE Secures long-term presence of CBF Field Personnel (salaries, benefits/insurance, housing) WHEN YOU GIVE... YOU KEEP MINISTERS ON THE MISSION FIELD Under a bold new plan that clarifies the vision for CBF Global Missions, gifts to the Offering for Global Missions support the transformative impact that long-term mission presence enables. When you give, you are investing in the cost of presence, that is, the salaries, benefits, housing costs and children s educational needs for all CBF field personnel. 9

The Missions Committee hopes to build a new ministry team to lead an initiative called Room in the Inn. During the warmest and coldest nights of the year, churches are asked to host small groups of homeless men or women overnight, as local shelters are turning away on average 30 to 50 people. By offering a safe and warm place for people to sleep, Wilshire will be helping fill a gap in our community. This initiative began in Nashville many years ago, and there are currently a dozen churches in Fort Worth serving in this way. Volunteers are needed for set-up and clean-up, to provide linens for cots, provide dinner and breakfast, provide transportation and to spend the night at the church.
