2 Preparing for worship Before I began attending Wilshire, I never attended a church that used the hymnal for worship. Attending other churches here and there, I learned some of the classics like Jesus Paid it All and Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, but never much beyond those. Now at Wilshire each week, I am offered something new about God through the lyrics of the hymns we sing lyrics I never have seen nor heard. It is one of my favorite parts of worship. For you who have been in the church your whole lives, I m sure many of our hymns you ve heard dozens, if not hundreds of times. I venture to guess some of them may even have lost their meaning, their shine, their impact. Perhaps in singing some of those more common, you find yourself drifting into distraction, only to be brought back by Doug s gesturing to return to our seats. This week in worship, we sing What a Friend We Have in Jesus. Although it may be familiar to you, take a moment to meditate this morning on the lyrics to this tune: What a friend we have in Jesus All our sins and griefs to bear. What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear. All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer! I invite you this morning to reflect on the state of your heart, soul and mind. What needless pain do you carry with you into our time of worship? Are you forfeiting peace by keeping your burdens to yourself, instead of sharing them with the friend you have in God? The hymn reminds us that God wants our everything both the overwhelming and the insignificant. In this time of worship, I pray you take the image of God as friend to heart. Know that God is near to you, knows you intimately and offers what you need, be it an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on or someone simply to be present with you. Would you join me in this prayer? God, thank you for being my friend. A faithful and present listener, giver of wisdom and comfort. I invite you to spend the next hour with me, enjoying a time of fellowship together. Help me to see this hour as a time to experience the joyful presence of a friend. Amen. In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude Präludium in C Kellner Opening Sentences Joan Hammons / Julie Girards We are invited to join all creation this morning in singing praise to our God. Let each of us and all of us find a voice and take our part in praise to Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Let all things our Creator bless. Alleluia! +Hymn 307 All Creatures of Our God and King lasst uns erfreuen Greeting to Worshipers Mark Wingfield Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate when it is passed later in the service. We would love to know you were here today. Prayer concerns will be received and prayed for this week when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate. Reading Psalm 36:5 10 Gayle Lawson / Alecia Hill Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your judgments are like the great deep; you save humans and animals alike, O Lord. How precious is your steadfast love, O God! All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. O continue your steadfast love to those who know you, and your salvation to the upright of heart! Children s Moment Jared Jaggers / Aaron Coyle-Carr *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. Hearing devices are available in the Narthex and South Atrium. 3

4 Anthem Abide with Me Johnson Sanctuary Choir Abide with me, fast falls the eventide. The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail, and comforts flee, help of the helpless, O abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs out life s little day, earth s joys grow dim, its glories pass away. Change and decay in all around I see; O thou who changest not, abide with me. I need thy presence ev ry passing hour. What but thy grace can foil the tempter s power? Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud or sunshine, Lord, abide with me! I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears, no bitterness. Where is death s sting, where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still if thou abide with me. Prayers of the People Collin Yarbrough / Woody Weilage +Hymn 409 What a Friend We Have in Jesus converse Giving of Tithes and Offerings During the month of January, we call attention to the blessings of giving generously even in death through legacy gifts and estate planning. With just a little bit of planning, each of us has the potential to leave a tithe (or more) of our estates to continue God s work through Wilshire. But this is a decision that has to be made in advance. Would you consider taking action this month to include a legacy gift to Wilshire s ministry in your will or by another means? Amen. Amen. +Gospel Reading John 2:1 11 Rachel Murphy / Britt McClung On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the 4

5 brim. He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. If you are a guest with us today, we welcome you warmly to our congregation. We would like to get to know you and tell you more about our church. Please take a Response Card from the pew rack, fill it out and place it in the offering plate when it comes by. Someone to talk with. If you are facing a life challenge and would like to have a spiritual friend to walk alongside you for a season of healing, perhaps you would benefit from a Stephen Minister. 7 The Wilshire Tapestry Annual Church Conference Wilshire s Annual Church Conference will be held today at noon in Community Hall. Farm-to-table is a phrase indicating that the food on the table came directly from a specific farm or a local farm or garden. This movement focuses on eating and supporting food that is grown close to where you live. Does it make sense to adopt this practice? Does it make a difference where we buy our food? What about what we put in our bodies? How can the table and a simple meal help us find more community? Participants will have practical discussions about the sacredness of an ordinary meal and thoughtful discussions on this farm-to-table idea. Today we celebrate the 15th anniversary of Mark Wingfield s work among us as associate pastor. Come to the Annual Church Conference for more on the recognition of this milestone.
