Fifteenth Sunday After Pentecost September 2, 2018

Preparing for worship In 1995, the First Baptist Church in Odessa celebrated its 100th birthday. This was the church I grew up attending, where I was baptized, sang in the children s and youth choirs and was a regular in Sunday School and Training Union. So when the celebration was announced, I made plans to fly back out to West Texas and join in the festivities. Along with the singing, preaching and general fellowshiping, attendees enjoyed looking through the many pictures that had been collected from throughout the church s history. If you ever have been to Odessa and think of it as a barren landscape, let me just tell you it did not look any better in 1895, according to the early pictures. As I was walking along the rows of tables looking at the thousands of photographs, I stopped to study a congregation picture taken from the pulpit and looking out at a packed Sanctuary. It was a crystal-clear black-andwhite picture, and I began intently looking at the faces in the congregation expecting to see people I knew. But even though the focus was sharp and the faces were visible, I could not find a single person I recognized. After a while, I moved on, still thinking it odd that I didn t find a familiar face in that crowd. It was some time later, as I was still puzzling over the picture, that I thought about the faces I had expected to see. They would have been the faces of a Sunday School teacher, choir sponsor, maybe a friend s parent, or the older family matriarch who sat in the same pew for a lifetime. Even though I didn t find any of those faces, I had the growing awareness that the faces in that picture were nonetheless the faces of the people who built the church that built my faith in Christ. In the first 100 years of First Baptist, Odessa, there was a time when the folks in the picture had invested themselves in that church. They had given their time to help with the kids, serve on committees and do hospital visits. Many had been a part of Bible studies, prayer groups and mission teams. Many also were regular givers to their church, not always out of abundance, but generally with an appreciation of shared responsibility. So, I still think about those faces, and I am grateful they built a place where I could learn that God is love, that Jesus loves the little children and that the fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Now, friends, it is our turn to be in the picture. Let s be fall in next Sunday, Sept. 9, for a congregational photo in worship. 3 September 2, :30 and 11:00 a.m. Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost Chiming of the Hour The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God. In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude Fugue in G Minor, BWV 578 J.S. Bach Opening Sentences Hart Robinson / Annette Miller We gather this morning on holy ground in a place made holy not because of brick and mortar but because we meet here to seek the Lord. It is our intent that makes this holy ground today. It is the presence of God among us that makes this holy ground today. It is the singing, praying, preaching, responding that make this holy ground today. It is the body of Christ, broken and spilled out once again, that makes this holy ground today. +Hymn 2 Come, Thou Almighty King italian hymn Greeting to Worshipers Mark Wingfield Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate when it is passed later in the service. You also are invited to take the red fabric rose from the card and place it on your lapel or blouse to help others identify that you are our honored guest today. Prayers of the People Matt Dodrill / Aaron Coyle-Carr Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Amen. *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. Hearing devices are available in the Narthex and South Atrium. 3

Epistle Reading 1 Peter 4:8 11 Jessica Capps / Darren DeMent Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Celebration of the Lord s Supper Tiffany Wright / Heather Mustain All followers of Christ are invited to partake of the Lord s Supper, whether you are a Wilshire member or not. Offertory *Psalm 34: Taste and See Haugen Mike Korson Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. I will bless the Lord at all times, God s praise ever in my mouth. Glory in the Lord for ever, and the lowly will hear and be glad. Glory in the Lord with me, let us together extol God s name. I sought the Lord, who answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Look to God that you might be radiant with joy, and your faces free from all shame. The Lord hears the suffering souls and saves them from all distress. 4

**Come Dwell in Solomon s Walls Sanctuary Choir Stroope When the final timber lay gainst the measured stones, With the doorposts in their place overlaid with gold, The Lord appeared to Solomon blessing all the house, The temple of the ark of God, pure and whole. Come dwell in Solomon s walls, Come and dwell in the house of the Lord, Where the humble bow down, seeking wisdom and strength, For the Lord dwells within and heals their land. Come dwell in Solomon s walls, Come and dwell in the house of the Lord, Where wisdom and righteousness, justice and holiness, Join at the feet of God. When the people of this house kneel and humbly pray, When they turn from dark to light and your will obey. O Lord of heaven and Lord of earth, show favor on this house, And heal, restore, forgive and bless, Lord we pray. +Offertory Response old 100th Our God is making all things new, a promise that we know is true. Through eyes of faith we long to see a love-transformed community. A place where truth and justice reign and healing triumphs over pain, Where all have dignity and worth and peace is passed throughout the earth. Old Testament Reading Exodus 3:1 12 Mark Eggert / Jim Nadalini Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. Then Moses said, I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up. When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, Moses, Moses! And he said, Here I am. Then he said, Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. He said further, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. Then the Lord said, I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the country of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have also seen how the Egyptians oppress them. So 5

come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt. But Moses said to God, Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the Israelites out of Egypt? He said, I will be with you; and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Message * Called to Serve Ryan Wilson ** Just Do It Jakob Topper +Hymn Lord, You Call Us to Your Service cwm rhondda WORDS: Wiliam H. Now, imagine you are a baker, potter, weaver, carpenter, scribe or palace guard and you are welcoming guests who have come from far and wide to shop in the colorful tents, register for the census and hear the news about the baby. You can do that and more on Dec. 14 when One Starry Night fills Wilshire s Community Hall with the sights and sounds of a firstcentury village.
