2 Preparing for worship If there is one thing you learn as a biologist, it is that all living organisms need water. Even those organisms that live in a desert, despite their many adaptations to the harsh, arid environment, need water in ever-so-minute amounts to survive. There are some circumstances in which organisms do not actively take in water. In these cases, the organisms often are dormant or nearing the end of their life cycles. Living organisms such as seeds never will grow and blossom into beautiful flowers without water. Water is a simple compound, consisting of just two elements in three atoms. At the same time, thanks to its chemical structure, water is remarkably complex. God s love for us is like water, so incredibly simple and yet so incredibly complex. As Christians, we often sing, read, hear and pray about water. We sing about running rivers and flowing fountains. We learn from our Scriptures that Jesus is the Living Water. Just as we cannot survive without chemical water, we cannot survive and live a fully Christ-like life without the Living Water. We need to nourish our souls; otherwise, we end up like a waterless seed: dormant and unable effectively to do the work of Christ to which we are called. Joining together in communal worship with the family of God is one way we replenish our souls. As we sing together today, let a fountain of joy bubble up in your heart as you praise God. As the music plays, sit quietly and listen, letting the rhythms and swells wash over you, providing you peace and comfort. As the people pray together, let the words you need to speak with God flow forth freely. As the word of God is read and preached, let the words of the text immerse your mind and spirit and speak to your deepest needs. Take a moment to silently prepare your heart for worship. In what ways has God shown you love in both simple and complex ways? How will you actively participate in communal worship to refresh and restore your soul? In what moments of today s service can you focus your attention on absorbing the Living Water? 3 February 17, :30 and 11:00 a.m. Sixth Sunday after Epiphany Chiming of the Hour The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God. In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude Voluntary in F Major Hine Opening Sentences Pat Cullum / Sally Hamilton This morning we have gathered to worship the Lord, who is immortal, invisible and the only one wise. We acknowledge that God is the giver of life to both the great and the small and that even though God is invisible to our eyes, God is known in our spirits as the true life of all. Scripture teaches that the grass withers and the flowers fade but the word of the Lord stands forever. It is in that hope that we sing today. +Hymn 58 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise st. denio Greeting to Worshipers Heather Mustain / Tiffany Wright Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate when it is passed later in the service. You also are invited to take the red fabric rose from the card and place it on your lapel or blouse to help others identify that you are our honored guest today. Prayer concerns will be received and prayed for this week when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate. Old Testament Reading Psalm 1 Carrie Donaldson / Connie Freeman Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. Hearing devices are available in the Narthex and South Atrium. 3

4 Children s Moment +Gospel Reading Luke 6:17 26 Mark Wingfield John Parnell / Chris Kelley He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. Then he looked up at his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. +Hymn 259 Blest Are They blest are they Prayers of the People Matt Dodrill / Ryan Wilson Giving of Tithes and Offerings Mentoring inmates through art-making is one of the ways Tina Bailey lives out the presence of Christ in community through her work as a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship representative in Bali, Indonesia. There, she assists with programs in both the men s and women s prisons. We create beloved community in many ways. For me this is the heart of what it means to be the presence of Christ: presence, time and energy given out of love. A beloved community in an unexpected place. At the request of the warden I initiated a beautification effort in the prison through creating large wall murals. The first was completed in early October. Four of the Narwastu Art Community students who are from Serbia joined in and taught the women how to properly create a large-scale mural. This is one of the ways your gifts to the Unified Budget work around the world. Offertory If You But Trust in God to Guide You arr. 5 Anthem *All the Way My Savior Leads Me arr. McDonald New Song Sarah Stafford, director; Crysta Jones, accompanist All the way my Savior leads me, what have I to ask beside? Can I doubt his tender mercy, who through life has been my guide? Heav nly peace, divinest comfort, here by faith in him to dwell! For I know whate er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well. All the way my Savior leads me, cheers each winding path I tread, Gives me grace for ev ry trial, feeds me with the living bread. Tho my weary steps may falter, and my soul athirst may be, Gushing from the Rock before me, lo! a spring of joy I see! All the way my Savior leads me, oh, the fullness of his love! Perfect rest to me is promised in my Father s house above. When my spirit, clothed immortal, wings its flight to realms of day, This my song thro endless ages; Jesus led me all the way! **Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace Sanctuary Choir Holland Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; To be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; For it s in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it s in dying that we are born to eternal life. Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. 15 Lent 2019 at Wilshire The Grace of Seeing Our theme comes from lines from a poem by J. Philip Newell, Opening Prayer. It captures the sense of the season as we learn the relationship between seeing and believing. Seeing is a form of believing, not a replacement for it. It is a grace, a gift to be able to see what God is doing among us and then join that story that is an alternative to the story of the world. I watch for your light, O God, in the eyes of every living creature and in the ever-living flame of my own soul. If the grace of seeing were mine this day, I would glimpse you in all that lives. Grant me the grace of seeing this day. Grant me the grace of seeing. The Lenten season begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6 15
