2 Preparing for worship Today begins our four-week emphasis on generosity. This Sunday highlights the generosity of creation. Creating is always an act of generosity. It requires the giving of time, resources and energy. This is what we see of God, who, when creating gives a bit of God s very self by breathing life into clay to animate the inanimate. But responsible creating goes further. By creating life, one also agrees to nurture that life as it matures. Thus, God covenants with humankind to give graciously and responsibly as we grow. Wilshire, you have demonstrated this same kind of creative generosity and responsibility in your pastoral residency program. You ve given of your time and resources not only to create the program but also to keep it going. This Sunday, you celebrate the culmination, in part, of your generosity as one of your residents is commissioned to go out and serve another congregation with the same generosity that you have shown. Generosity begets generosity. You now have 31 resident missionaries you ve sent out into the world to spread the generosity and wisdom you first sowed among us. Not only are you commissioning me this morning, but you also are sharing in the dedication of our family in the raising of my daughter, Hadley. Alyssa and I worked hard to create this little life, and we need all the support we can get to raise her well. No matter where I serve as pastor, we always will be connected to Wilshire, returning again and again to find strength and courage for the journey. You ve already pledged your support in nurturing Hadley into mature Christian faith in so many ways. To do so publicly this morning is merely an honest acknowledgment of who you ve already demonstrated yourselves to be. Wilshire, you re one of the most generous congregations I ve ever known. You ve walked with my family in our darkest moments and given of yourselves selflessly. I can never repay you, but I do intend to pay it forward. That s how generosity works. 3 October 28, :30 and 11:00 a.m. Reformation Sunday Chiming of the Hour The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God. In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude A Mighty Fortress Is Our God arr. Wagner Carillon Ringers James Steel, director Opening Sentences David Clanton / Jeanne Spreier We gather for worship today with the knowledge that we cannot confide in our own strength to face the challenges of life. Amid the evils around us, we declare this morning our need for God s help and our openness to hear and understand the movement of God s Spirit. We confidently place our trust in the victorious Son of God, Jesus Christ, our Lord. +Hymn 418 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God ein feste burg Greeting to Worshipers Mark Wingfield Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate when it is passed later in the service. You also are invited to take the red fabric rose from the card and place it on your lapel or blouse to help others identify that you are our honored guest today. Prayer concerns will be received and prayed for this week when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate. Epistle Reading Ephesians 2:4 10 Darren DeMent / Tiffany Wright But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. Hearing devices are available in the Narthex and South Atrium. 3

4 +Hymn 41 There s a Wideness in God s Mercy wellesley Prayers of the People Jared Jaggers / Aaron Coyle-Carr Giving of Tithes and Offerings Today begins a four-week emphasis on generosity at Wilshire. We begin by considering how from the beginning of creation, God has demonstrated generosity. We are born and live because of God s generous provision. Offertory The Works of Thy Hand Moklebust Carillon Ringers Tanya Benson, flute +Offertory Response old 100th Our God is making all things new, a promise that we know is true. Through eyes of faith we long to see a love-transformed community. A place where truth and justice reign and healing triumphs over pain, Where all have dignity and worth and peace is passed throughout the earth. +Gospel Reading Genesis 1:26 28, 31 Darla Roden / Lindsay Bruehl Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Anthem God So Loved The World Stainer/Harlan *Youth Choir, Alissa Payne, accompanist **Sanctuary Choir, Ralph Manuel, accompanist God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, That all who believeth in him, should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son to condemn. But through him, we might be saved. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, That all who believeth in him, shall have eternal life. 4

5 Message A Generous Creation George Mason +Hymn 6 Creator God, Creating Still st. anne Sharing of Decisions Service of Blessing Recognition of Jakob Topper Litany of Blessing George Mason Shaeron Moorhead / Lillie Campbell As a church, we gather today to give thanks to God for the journey with us of Jakob Topper. We are grateful for the family, friends, teachers, churches and mentors who shaped him on his way to us. We give thanks for the seeds of faith planted by others. Through two years of ministry, we have sought together to follow Christ and to be Christ s church in this place. You have walked among us as a brother, rejoiced with us, wept with us and sought God s truth with us. We give thanks for the seeds of hope you have nurtured among us. Now we prepare to let go, to send forth Jakob with our blessing, praying that he may be salt of the earth and light for the world as he plants new seeds of God s care in other places. We give thanks for the seeds of joy to be sown in the years ahead. It was God who made the seed grow. The planter and the waterer are nothing compared with him who gives life to the seed. For we are laborers together with God. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen. Sending Forth and Presentation of Gifts Family Dedication Lay Support Team George Mason We welcome into the life of the congregation today Hadley Lynn Topper, daughter of Alyssa and Jakob Topper. Through this dedication, the family and the congregation pledge to raise Hadley in the nuture and admonition of the Lord, so that when she reaches an appropriate age she may choose for herself to follow Jesus Christ as Savior. Present for the dedication are grandparents 5
