4 Council Notes Council reviewed Vision Planning work related to adult learning opportunities for the coming year, options for bringing worship services to our shut-ins, and formalized training for elders/deacons. Formative staff evaluations are currently in progress. Plans were finalized for the Congregational Meeting to be held on Monday, July 18th at 7:00 PM. Reviewed a self-reflection assessment on the work of the Council. Discussed the current level of giving and financial support from First CRC and ways to raise awareness and encourage more involvement and commitment. Approved the proposed budget for Last Week s Offerings Local Budget $5, The Deacons would like to ask you once again to prayerfully consider your giving to the Local Budget as we are currently behind by $25, Thank you. 5 - Barb Heeringa as she recovers from knee replacement surgery. Give thanks that she is doing so well. - The Homan family as they mourn the loss of Ed and as Flora adjusts to this change. - Laura Ten Pass and family as she again deals with cancer. Pray for emotional strength as prepares for surgery that is yet to be scheduled. - Carlie Jansen who received reports that some spots were discovered in her lungs. At this point we do not know what they are. Further testing will be done. Please pray for peace and that future tests will show no evidence of disease. - Zechariah Aho as he continues his recovery. Pray that he will continue will be able to eat on his own. - Marlyce Mulder as she recovers from cornea transplant surgery. That she may have recovery of her eyesight. - David Mulder (Sue Buwalda s cousin) as he continues treatment. We will not only choose the new elders and deacons but we will also hear an update from the building / property committee and vote on our new budget. Those who have been nominated for the office of elder are George Aalsma, Norm Buwalda, Bob Mulder, Don Pausma and Merle Schouten. Those nominated for the office of deacon are Ben Homan, Eric Homan, Ben Mulder and Brian Van Herwaarden. Absentee ballots are available on the shelf in the narthex. Our youth group will be in Rehoboth, NM from July Watch your and the church Facebook page for updates. Please pray not only for safety but also for an encounter with our living God that will change us. Dan Montsma invites you to come on down to the Union Youth Center and help construct a wall and some sound panels for the Cadets. Many hands makes light work. Any questions please contact Dan at This past month our denomination met in their annual synodical meeting, a group that makes decisions affecting the entire denomination. As a part of the Christian Reformed Church we need to be aware of what happens so there are summaries of this meeting in the narthex. Feel free to pick one up. We are planning a ladies trip to Ikea in IL. Any ladies that would like to go along for this day trip can sign up in the narthex. The date will be

The Church Women United of the Waupun Area are once again sponsoring the annual school supply collection. The group collects supplies that are distributed to children in the Waupun Area School District so that all kids have a great start to another great school year. Last year over 230 students received the basic supplies they needed along with a new backpack if they needed one. There is a bin placed in the narthex with a copy of what donations are needed. Collection ends August 7. We are still in need of many items for the bag lunch program! We will be serving at the Community Table this week and they have been averaging about bags a day. Please consider helping out with this worthwhile project. You can still bring items today and throughout the week, we will be checking in for them. Or you can contact Gladys at Thank you! The retreat, hosted by Bible League International Volunteers, will be a day of spiritual renewal as you experience good fellowship, great music, and inspiring speakers. Valerie Elliot Shepard, our featured speaker, is the only child of Elisabeth and Jim Elliot, missionaries to the Quichua Indians in Ecuador. She speaks from her life story with a heart for teaching and missions. Due to the historical nature of our speaker, men are encouraged to join us. 8 Proclaiming Evidence for Truth THIS WEEK'S CREATION MOMENT The Infinite Monkey Theorem Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Isaiah 35:5 If an infinite number of monkeys sat down at an infinite number of typewriters, eventually one of these monkeys would type Shakespeare's play Hamlet. At least that's what French mathematician Émile Borel proposed in his infinite monkey theorem an idea that scientists use to assert that given enough time, even evolution can happen. Now, if anyone ever tosses the infinite monkey theorem in your direction, point out that a monkey has a one in twenty-six chance of typing the first letter correctly. Getting the second letter correct sees the probability rise to 1 in 676. After just the first 15 letters of Hamlet, the chance of getting the next letter right is one in thousands of trillions! In 2003, the infinite monkey theorem was put to the test at the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom. Researchers put six crested macaques in front of a computer and waited for them to start typing. Occasionally, in between urinating on the keyboard and smashing it with a rock, the monkeys typed out the letter "S" several times before tiring of the experiment. Despite the sheer absurdity of the infinite monkey theorem, it is still being used to show that complexity can arise from random mutations. In fact, as recently as 1986, evolutionary evangelist Richard Dawkins brought it up in his book The Blind Watchmaker. It never ceases to amaze us what evolutionists will believe so they can continue in their unbelief. Clearly, the infinite monkey theorem has done nothing but make monkeys out of those who still believe it! Ref: R.
