When I was just a kid, Lent signaled that time of the year for finding something to give up, eating fish on Friday, and filling my little paper rice bowl with coins for the starving kids in. (You can fill in the blank.) However, now that I am a grown-up I see Lent as being a bit more complicated than that. During my Lenten journey I see these practices of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving as a path to a more faith filled experience. Prayer is my way of communicating with God. It s my opportunity to come closer to Him and build on the relationship we have. Here at the Casa there are so many opportunities to take part in a more prayerful life--for instance, the Stations of the Cross, Taizé, Meditation and the Rosary. Through prayer, God makes clearer my way, and as I arrive at Easter we have become closer and our bond has become stronger. In my mind, fasting is not just about giving up eating meat on Friday. I once said, Mom I really don t like fish; it stinks and tastes funny. Pray with gratitude, she responded. There are children in this world who don t have the luxury of choosing what fills their belly or if it will be filled by the time morning comes. When I think I am starving, I remind myself that this small sacrifice is a daily occurrence for others. I pray, and then I take actions to alleviate the issue of poverty in the communities that surround me. Almsgiving seems to be an elemental part of the Lenten mission. My parents taught me that we should be doing and giving for the less fortunate because in each one of these people is the grace of God. The act of giving should be done with an open heart acknowledging God s gifts to us as we share them with others. Think about what gifts God has given you and your stewardship of those gifts. What could you share? How could you share it? These three elements of my Lenten journey come together so easily now. I look forward to the Lenten season. I don t have to use a rice bowl anymore but sometimes I wish I did; it serves as reminder of the opportunities the season offers us. 3 LITURGY CONNECTION Taize Prayer Services Taize is an ecumenical community in France. Taize prayer services consist of meditative singing and periods of silence in order to reach a contemplative state. Short chants, repeated again and again, give it a meditative character. Using just a few words, the chants express a basic reality of faith, quickly grasped by the mind. As the words are sung over many times, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. Consider joining us on Fridays during Lent, following the simple soup supper, at 7pm in the Meditation Chapel for this unique prayer opportunity. The service lasts about 30 minutes. Adoration and Benediction Eucharistic devotions developed particularly from the 13th century rooted in the desire of people to contemplate the presence of Christ in the sacramental species leading to a renewed commitment to Christian living. In terms of spirituality these practices also encourage a realization of the humanity of the Lord (physical elements) while recognizing his divinity. In 1967 the Vatican issued Eucharisticum Mysterium which promoted Eucharistic devotions with the addition of Scripture readings, common hymns and prayers. The changes helped to relate the devotion more closely to the Mass by the utilization of familiar elements of the Mass. Eucharistic devotions offer believers further opportunities to thank God, to commune with Christ, to ask for strength for service and to pray with Christ for the needs of the Church and the world. Beginning Wednesday March 8th, we will offer Eucharistic Adoration on the 2nd Wednesdays of every month. Ash Wednesday March 1st, 2017 Mass with the distribution of ashes will be at 7am, 12 Noon, and 7pm. Lenten practices Customary observances during Lent focus on three areas: prayer and fasting and almsgiving. But, it might be more meaningful to consider how these practices can support and enrich each other. Ash Wednesday and Friday s of Lent are days of fasting and abstinence from meat. Fasting is one of the Church s practices of public penance. On Ash Wednesday at the Casa, we will offer a simple soup lunch at 1pm following the noon mass, and a simple soup dinner at 6pm, prior to the 7pm mass. Come as you are and sit around a table with other members of the community in this simple meal. Donations are gratefully accepted and given to the poor. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. There are unlimited ways of connecting this threefold Lenten challenge: works of personal charity, attending Mass daily or several times a week, praying the rosary or the way of the cross, attending an evening prayer service such as Taize Prayer, teaching the illiterate to read, reading to the blind, helping at a soup kitchen, visiting the sick and shutins and giving a young mother a break by babysitting. All of these can be more meaningful than simply giving up chocolate for Lent although there is nothing wrong with that! It s a good starting point. Let us all pray for the gift of integrity and the strength to keep Lent faithfully. Fridays in Lent Fridays during Lent we will pray the Stations of the Cross at 5:45 pm, followed by a simple soup supper. Following the simple soup supper, all are invited to join in a Taize prayer service in the Meditation Chapel. The 8th Sunday of Ordinary Time ~ Cycle A February 26, 2017 thecasa.org RENEWAL Page 3

4 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Enter the Season of Lent with a Joyful Heart! There are many resources available for families both children and adults to help us enter this season with an open and joyful heart. Pull out your phone, tablet or computer and take a look at these resources: Parents and Teens: Loyola Press Living Lent daily Embracing the Cross a six week preparation for Lent Word on Fire by Fr. Robert Barron Busted Halo Ash Wednesday and Lent in Two minutes Elementary Children and Younger: Holy Heroes Lenten adventure Lenten-Adventure-s/37.htm Catholic Icing activities for younger children Lent Activities for kids of all ages faithful-lent-activities-for-kids/ Lenten Prayer Chain lenten-prayer-chain-countdown-plus-more. html Family Faith Activities Feb. 26th 8th Sunday of Ordinary Time Who among us has never worried about a situation? Whether it is about relationship, money or health, as adults we bear the greatest share of anxieties and concerns. But we need to be aware that our children also deal with anxieties and pressures. Issues such as how they will fit in at school, how they will do on a test, or will they make the team, are all real concerns. In the spirit of the Gospel they also worry about lack of food for the homeless and taking care of the environment. Listening carefully to what our children are saying about their day and interactions with others creates an environment of open and honest communication. Breaking open today s Gospel can help all of us to remember to place our concerns in God s hands, where they truly belong. Gather your family and talk about how different was your family cares for each other. Read Matthew 6:24-34 and discuss: What does Jesus tell us about God s creation? Why does Jesus say that we should not worry? What will happen if we depend on God s love for us? Worry Bowl: Place a bowl on the table along with several strips of paper and a pencil or pen. Invite family members to write down things they are worried about and to place their worries in the bowl throughout the week. As the family gathers pray: God of peace, we place before you all the things we are worried about. Thank you for caring for our every need. Amen. Bubbles: Go outside and blow bubbles while discussing how they represent the worries of our lives, but they pop and disappear. Equate this to the Gospel reading from today. Concluding Prayer: Slowly pray the Lord s Prayer together, thinking about each sentence as you pray. 7 FAITH IN ACTION MINISTRIES Brothers in Peace and Prayer Retreat Thich Nhat Hanh and Thomas Merton: Contemplative Peace Makers Friday, March 10 Sunday, March 12 Thich Nhat Hanh and Thomas Merton found a common connection in their belief that working for justice was a natural outgrowth of the contemplative life. Join Laura as we explore the key themes and principles of Catholic Social Teaching as they apply to peacemaking and the common good, and how they shape our call to lives of love and service in the world NOTE: A foundation course for the Nonviolence Leadership Certificate Program. 10 VISION CORNER No One Has Ever Become Poor By Giving. -Anne Frank Arizona Gives Day is Tuesday, April 4th! What is Arizona Gives Day? It is a statewide, 24-hour, online giving campaign that takes place the first Tuesday of April each year. It enables nonprofits to share their stories and engage the community through a unique online giving platform. And we want YOU to be involved. As you know, the Casa has so many stories to share. Jeff Griffin will be taking YOUR picture after Sunday mass through the months of February and March. These pictures will be posted on Social Media so the Casa can show off its dedicated community members, and volunteers. This will allow us to highlight our many ministries, as well. We encourage you to share these posts with your family and friends from around the world, as a way to ask them to participate in this very special day of giving. You ll see our Winter Residents joined in the picture taking fun at the Renewing Lives Winter Resident Breakfast earlier this month. Our goal this year is $7,500. This money will help the Casa sustain not only new and on-going programs, but basics such as paying the light bill and buying pool supplies. Since 1951, the Casa has been renewing lives through spiritual growth, healing and transformation, and serving others. Don t shy away when you see Jeff in the Hospitality area on Sundays taking pictures over the next few weeks to share on Social Media. Ham it up! Let s show the world that the Casa is a place for Healing & Transformation, Spiritual Growth and Service to Others. A place we need to sustain for many future generations.
