All sacramental records are kept at your church of baptism so that you don t have to look in several different places, as we are such a mobile society. These documents provide the necessary information for church requirements for those wanting to be sponsors and/ or godparents. Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist are the sacraments of initiation needed for one to be either a sponsor or a godparent. Marriage, religious profession and ordination are also recorded at the church of baptism. I believe it is important to have a hard copy with the church seal in your possession. Other church records that can be used to substantiate participation and support are of benefit for those families seeking school enrollment and/or tuition reduction. If the church cannot document a registration form or track support through donation envelopes or by check, then it becomes impossible to support the student s family. Accurate recording of sacraments is a tremendous help for anyone considering participating in ministry, especially teenagers and young adults. If you change locations, phone numbers or , please notify the church office. Please help the church support you by providing the information we need for your benefit. Peace and Good, Fr. Peter Kirwin O.F.M., Rector RENEWAL is published weekly by the Franciscan Renewal Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization 5802 E. Lincoln Dr., Scottsdale, AZ Federal Tax ID Printed by J.S. 3 LITURGY CONNECTION The Diocese of Phoenix s Charity and Development Appeal is Next Week Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. Pope Francis Next weekend is the annual Charity and Development Appeal. The CDA supports community and charitable organizations that assist individuals and families in need or in crisis. These organizations improve the lives of thousands of people across four Arizona counties (Mohave, Maricopa, Coconino and Yavapai). The CDA serves the needs of local communities beyond the boundaries of any one parish. As a result, more people are helped. Through the CDA, faith is nurtured and developed from birth through adulthood. Opportunities to live and grow our Catholic faith are available through our schools, parishes, religious education programs, Kino Institute as well as other opportunities offered throughout the Diocese. The CDA also supports the education and formation of seminarians, priests and deacons. More information can be found at dphx.org/cda. Recruiting for the Liturgical Movement Ministry Volunteers are invited to participate in the Liturgical Movement Ministry, to serve at the upcoming Holy Week celebrations. Participants in this ministry must feel comfortable and confident with simple choreographed movement. Dance experience or training is helpful, but not necessary. Skill building is part of the rehearsal process. If you are interested, please come and explore the possibilities at a workshop on Saturday, February 18, 2017 from 12:30 to 3:30 pm. If you would like more information, you are welcome to contact Pam Bork at pam@thecasa.org. The Casa Choir Can you read music? The Casa Choir has already begun rehearsals for the liturgies of Holy Week, as well as preparing for the dedication liturgy and opening events for the new church. New choir members are being sought particularly men and must be able to sight-read music notation and sing with a pleasing voice. Previous choir singing experience is very helpful, as the choir rehearsals move quickly and can be a challenge to keep up. To schedule an audition, contact Norbert at norbert@thecasa.org. 4 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Family Faith Activities Feb. 5th 5th Sunday of Ordinary Time Salt and light are items that can be easily taken for granted in society today. However, in Jesus' time, salt was a very important commodity. It was used to pay salaries and to flavor food. Salt was used to preserve food and as a healing agent. The widespread use of electricity today makes us less aware of the importance of light in our lives. But the presence of light in darkness is unmistakable in every age. These metaphors powerfully state our mission as disciples in today s world. Gather your family and ask What can you do to bring the light of Jesus into the lives of your family and friends?" Read Matthew 5:13-16 and discuss: What does Jesus tell His followers about letting their light shine? What happens when people let their light shine in the world? How can Jesus followers give glory to God? Candlelight: Gather all your candles and set them on the table at meal time. Try to make these the only lights in the room. As you enjoy your meal, talk together about how each member of the family is light to one another and to others. Flashlights: Explore a dark closet or cabinet with a flashlight. Does darkness overtake the light or the light the darkness? Light will always illuminate darkness. Discuss how this relates to the Christian walk. If one lets his light shine, how can darkness overtake him? Popcorn: Make popcorn and leave some unsalted. Salt a portion too much. Can the salt be removed from the salty popcorn? How does it taste without salt? How does this relate in the world today? Can we be saltshakers of God s love no matter what the world thinks? Concluding Prayer: Let us pray. God of Light, let Your light shine through our good and loving actions. Amen. First Communion! Confirmation! Calling all prayer partners... Next weekend, February 11/12, you can pick up the name of a student preparing for these sacraments. We know the power of prayer is amazing and life changing. Take time to share this gift with our students. Stop by the Hospitality Area after any Mass, and pick your partner! BE A LIGHT IN TODAY S WORLD Say a prayer it only takes a moment. Send a card there's nothing like a handwritten note to bring cheer to others. Visit a nursing home or hospital take cookies or flowers. Fix a meal for a new mom, shut-in or someone who is sick. Make blessing bags fill a zip lock bag with snacks, juice box or any other items you have on hand. Keep in your car to pass out to someone in need. Purge your panty fill up a bag or two and donate to a food bank or women s shelter. Clean out toy box and closet get your kids involved so they can learn the importance of giving. Share your gifts with others can you write a note of support, can you draw a picture to inspire? Or cook or sew? Donate blood right here at the Casa! Be aware open your eyes; there are countless opportunities to serve others. 10 VISION CORNER Annual Appeal Continues Your tremendous support of the Franciscan Renewal Center as a guest, volunteer, benefactor, on retreat or meeting here for a conference, or a community member of the Our Lady of the Angels Church, is greatly appreciated. The Franciscan Renewal Center has been a beacon of light for millions of people over the past 65 years and is known virtually all over the world for the assortment of ministries, programs and good will provided. With that in mind, please remember the Franciscan Renewal Center during our annual appeal which is behind last year's results. Truly, this once a year appeal is primary for the ongoing operational expenses it takes to ensure the bills are paid. We thank the over 250 Tau Society members who have pledged support over many years, and we also are grateful for the 218 donors who provided a cash gift for the annual appeal. Believe me, we are all aware of the many ways you are asked for donations in a variety of ways from a variety of sources. Currently, the FRC Board of Directors is evaluating this closely. But the Franciscan Renewal Center is the source and core of thousands of people weekly and is the spiritual home which provides necessary strength for the journey. We need to keep our counseling services on a donation only basis and maintain affordable prices for our programs. We must ensure we provide our staff a just salary commensurate with the industry standard, as well as affordable healthcare. Our staff typically receives an annual increase of 2 to 3% to keep in line with inflation, and every staff member has an annual evaluation. I share some of these costs related to providing the over 140,000 visits we will have this year, because it only happens by you, our benefactors, operating revenues and a 4% drawdown from our endowment fund. We need your help. Please consider a gift to the Franciscan Renewal Center Annual Appeal by going online and using our donation button or putting a check in the basket designated for the appeal. May God Bless us all during the upcoming season of Lent and continue to provide all of us grace and goodness in our lives. Charlie Brown, General Manager "Don't let people pull you into their STORM. Pull them into your PEACE." Maya Angelou Discover the Casa in One Hour and See What You've Been Missing Is it a church...a retreat center...a place to learn, heal and grow? 12 Why donate blood? Catholics Can Come Home A Series of Seven Thursday Evenings 7:00-8:30 pm February 9th - March 23rd, 2017 Designed for those who feel alienated from or hurt by the Church, Catholics Can Come Home is a program specifically created to provide a safe forum in which to share experiences and ideas, ask questions, and allow our team to meet each participant wherever they are in their spiritual journey. This facilitator-lead discussion series is specifically intended for Catholic individuals who: Have drifted away from the Church Hold some hurt or anger about the Church Find the Catholic religion no longer relevant If any of these describe your feelings, please join us. If these describe the feelings of someone you know, please invite them to participate. Let s talk about it! If you re curious or have questions, call Kathleen Garast at or kgarast@aol.com FREE! There is no fee to participate in this series. These sessions dramatically changed my perspective on my spiritual journey. I was able to debunk many myths about the Church I formed during my childhood, understand my potential role as an adult in the Church, and openly address my many disagreements with the Church positions. Franciscan Renewal Center Peace. Renewal. Good. Our blood supply comes from caring donors like you. It takes about one hour of your time. When you give blood, it gives someone another smile, another hug, another chance. It is the gift of life. Please make your appointment to donate blood on Sunday, February 19th. Sponsor code: Franciscan Casa Art Walk Over the past four years, the Casa Art Walk has provided countless opportunities for artisans to demonstrate their work. Now that we enter into a new season, it makes sense to pause and reflect on what has been accomplished in the past as well as look to the near future for new directions. For this reason, the FRC has decided to not continue the Art Walk this year. As we move into a new and exciting time at the Casa we are grateful to the many artisans and volunteers who helped make this four-year event happen.
