Mack, CPA Treasurer William Anger, Esq., Vice Chair Arlene Davidson, Secretary Phone Fax Website thecasa.org Two weeks ago, I took 30 Casa Community members on an immersion trip to the San Carlos Apache Reservation. You may wonder why. Why go 2 hours away to a remote part of the state? It s all about relationships. The Friars of the St. Barbara province have had a 100-year presence at the Catholic Church in San Carlos living with and ministering to the San Carlos Apache people. In addition, for around 20 years, the Casa Community has donated food boxes or food cards to the church community in San Carlos. Then, for around 10 years, members of the Casa community have worked alongside Apache crafters to promote and sell their handmade crafts. During that time, we have developed some close relationships that have blossomed to the point that our Apache brothers and sisters want to share their culture and spirituality with us. We were blessed by all that we experienced that day. On the trip, we spent time at the Apache Cultural Center seeing cultural artifacts and hearing stories from times before and during life on the reservation. We then went to the church hall for a delicious traditional Apache lunch. Have you ever eaten Acorn Soup? It s a little bitter. But with some salt, it has a very unique flavor. Then came time for crafting demonstrations. I have purchased and sold the Apache burden baskets for years. It was a great pleasure to see how they are woven from the willow plant. Maybe my greatest joy came from listening to Karen Ketchion Jones share, with pride, about the Sunrise Ceremony which is a young women s puberty rites. She shared with us the pictures and ceremonial items that her own daughters wore and used during their special days. Family is very important for the Apache People. I felt as if they included us in their family for this day. My hope is that those who attended the trip will help us build on what has already taken place between these two communities and continue to grow our relationships. 3 LITURGY CONNECTION Lent Communal Reconciliation Service Monday, March 13 at 7pm Lent is always a good time to celebrate this beautiful sacrament: the church s proclamation of God s great love for us through the forgiveness of our sins. The point of Lent is to change our hearts - turning toward living a life following the gospel of Jesus more closely. You can seal that commitment more deeply through this celebration of reconciliation, and experience the peace that comes from hearing the beautiful words of absolution. We gather at these communal celebrations to make a fresh start together. Many people see in penance only its difficult side, and its emphasis on sorrow. But it has also a more joyful side, and it looks more to the future than to the past. Through this sacrament, God gives us a new beginning. We can find true freedom as God s adopted sons and daughters. In all of the church s sacraments, we are invited to experience the real presence -- of a God who invites us to new life (baptism) -- who affirms us with the gift of the Holy Spirit (confirmation) -- who binds us together through a shared meal (eucharist) -- who makes sacred human love (marriage) -- who heals the sick (anointing) -- and who draws us ever closer through the forgiveness of sin (reconciliation) In this sacrament of reconciliation, Christ the forgiver becomes present to us, opens his heart to us and bathes us in his love and kindness. This Week s Lenten Offerings: Tuesday: Thursday: Friday: Rosary at 6:00 pm Centering Prayer at 7:45 am Stations of the Cross at 5:45 pm Simple Soup Supper at 6:00 pm Tazié Prayer at 7:00 pm The Year Of Building Our Church and our Community March 2017 God of love and kindness, you invite us to reconcile our relationships, both with you and with each other, not only in this holy time of Lent but throughout our lives. We see the cross of your son the sign of our Christian faith which stands at the intersection of heaven and earth, calling us to reconciliation and new life. On our new church, the cross on the bell tower rises above us as part of the framework for the bells that will call your people together and mark our times for celebration and prayer. At the base of the cross on this bell tower, the Reconciliation Chapel will be for us a place to receive and celebrate your boundless love and mercy. May the cross on this tower stand as witness and as symbol of your grace, reminding us that your mercy is always available to us. May the chapel below become a sacred place to accept that mercy. And may we become ever more fully the Body of Christ in our place and time. We ask this in the name of your son, Jesus our rock and cornerstone who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. 4 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Family Faith Activities March 12th Second Sunday of Lent Prayer is the setting for today s Gospel. Something important is going to happen and it does! Jesus is revealed in all his glory. Peter and his companions were amazed by what they see, the divine nature of Jesus. The disciples heard God speaking to them and they came away with a new appreciation of Jesus words and who he is, even if they didn t quite get the big picture. During Lent we too are invited to consider how attentive we are to Jesus and one another. In the noise and fast pace of life, how well do we listen to one another? Can we also be transformed to see beyond the ordinary to see the holy in our families life? Gather your family and make a count of all pieces of equipment in your home that produce sound. Discuss what it is like to try and talk to one another when this equipment is on? Read Matthew 17:1-9 and discuss: What happens to Jesus on the mountain top? Who appears to Jesus and the disciples? What does the voice of God say? What did Peter and his companions do? Dazzling like the Sun: As Jesus prays his face changes in appearance and his clothes are dazzling like the sun. Make an outline of a sun on white construction paper or on a paper plate. Have your child paint the sun yellow, sprinkle glitter to make it dazzle! T-Shirt Time! Reflect on some of the issues troubling the world today, and then reflect on how Jesus is the Light of the World. As his follower, come up with ways that you can be a light shining in the darkness. Design a T-Shirt that shows how you can do this. For example, illustrate a candle with faces all around it, with a slogan such as Be a light to others. T-Shirts and acrylic paints can be found at any craft store. Wear your shirt during Lent as a sign to others of your own transfiguration! Concluding Prayer: Gather your family around your prayer center and ask them to sit in quiet contemplation of Jesus. End with the Lord s Prayer. FAMILY STATIONS OF THE CROSS Friday March 17th 5:45 pm Desert walk area by the Swing. Simple Soup Supper afterwards along with an optional activity for children and adults. No RSVP needed, just meet us in the desert! Stations of the Cross Who, What, Where & When How many of us would like to literally walk in the footsteps of Christ in the Holy Land? Unfortunately not everyone is able to do this. So, ever since the middle ages, churches and chapel s began erecting images devoted to an aspect of the Lords Passion. By the 15th century Franciscans developed the devotion of stations," meaning a place where people stand still or gather together. Although being stationary is implied, this prayer includes the movements of pilgrims following the footsteps of Christ. The 14 Stations and sometimes a15th (Resurrection of Jesus) are found in most every Catholic Church. There are many variations of this prayer, but the Stations are always about making this Journey with Christ. The Casa community prays the Stations every Friday of Lent at 5:45 pm. together. Afterwards you are invited to stay for a simple soup supper. For those of you who cannot attend there are several online options to choose from. Loyola Press ( offers an online Stations of the Cross for children that can also be printed. Creighton Online Ministries also offers several options for the Stations of the Cross. ( creighton.edu). You can walk also pray the Stations of the Cross anytime with your family. Simply request a guide from the office or print your own from either of the two above sites. Happy walking!
