In 1 Samuel 3:3b-10, 19, the story of the call of a boy who will become the great prophet is recorded. It s unclear to Samuel and to his mentor what the call is about. They learn gradually. This is a good reminder to us who are searching that it often takes time, a companion and good listening skills to begin to unwrap our vocation in life. John the Evangelist s Gospel (1:35-42) is full of insight and revelation about the call to vocation. John the Baptist seems to understand something about the vocation of Jesus that others take a very long time to grasp: that Jesus is the Lamb of God. If we refer to the imagery in Isaiah 53:7 and Jeremiah 12:19 we can learn John seems to grasp that Jesus is to be some kind of sacrificial offering, not the revolutionary war leader or Son of Man that most people wanted him to be. Two of John s disciples make the decision to follow Jesus because of John s insight. Soon after, Andrew follows Jesus as well and invites his brother Simon to do the same. Jesus notes Simon s qualities and calls him Peter (Aramaic Kepha-Rock), pointing out a vocational role for him. A lot of insight is packed into a few lines in this Gospel. What is your vocation story like? For some, it s pretty clear; for others it may be vague or in the process of development. No matter what, we should learn some clues from our readings. This is a process that takes time. There can be significant moments, and we can learn from others who see things in us that we might be missing. We need to listen and take time to discern using not just our opinions but those of others. Offer your life to the guidance of the Spirit and see where the Lord takes you. 3 A Gentle Reminder Please remember to turn off your pagers and cell phones when you come to Mass. Some people are required to be able to be contacted at all times; in this case, we respectfully ask you to set your devices to the silent modes. Do you use our envelope system? Our envelope system is one of the best ways to manage your financial gifts to the Casa. If you would like to begin, please contact Rosa at ext.121 or In Presenza Di in the presence of Italian for In the presence of, In Presenza Di is an opportunity for the entire community to gather before the Eucharist for a time of prayer, praise, teaching and adoration. Wednesday, January 28th 7:00-8:30 pm Music & Reflection Tom Booth LITURGY CONNECTION Simple Thoughts... Psalm 40, which we sing as our response today, can be a frame for the rest of the readings. And more than just a frame, it s also a way to respond to the call we hear in these readings. We should make this Psalm a prayer of our life. Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. In the first reading, Samuel learns how to make this response. He heard a call but did not know who called, or how to answer. Eli helped him to understand that the Lord was calling him. When the Lord called Samuel again, he responded, Speak, Lord, your servant is listening. Because of Samuel s response, we are told that the Lord was always with him, ensuring that any word Samuel spoke had an effect. Saint Paul challenges us to see that this response, our own Here I am, affects not just what we say, but our entire being. Our very body is part of our response to God, and through our very being, we glorify God. In the Gospel, John the Baptist gives testimony of Christ as savior. From the testimony, the Apostles answer the call with their Here I am, and they begin to follow Jesus. We are called to do the same with our life. In all things, we come to do God s will. Our entire life proclaims Christ in us to all we meet. We can run, but we can t hide from our call. We can t put it on a shelf and only take it out on Sundays. But that s ok. We shouldn t want to run. When we live our life for God, doing His will, proclaiming His love with our life, we will have the same joy we pray in the Psalm, To do your will, O my God, is my delight! ~ Rejoicing that we are temples of the Holy Spirit, and called by God to glorify Him; let us sing a new song to the Lord, proclaiming with our entire life that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world and we, like Samuel & the Apostles, are called to answer by saying, Here I am Lord, I have come to do Your will. ~The Church Staff Have You Registered? 4 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Family Faith Activities January 18: Second Sunday of Ordinary Time Jesus asks Andrew and the other disciple: What are you looking for? This is a question that we might often ask ourselves. The first disciples were looking for the Messiah. What do we look for, and what do we find in Jesus? How do we share this with our children and others around us? Becoming a disciple involves a passion for Christ. We may not always clearly understand what this means, but like the disciples, we can let go of what holds us down and follow Christ. Gather your family and ask: How do we know that Jesus is calling us to follow Him? Read John 1:35-42 and discuss: What did John the Baptist call Jesus? What did Jesus ask the disciples? Why do they follow Jesus? What does Jesus invite the disciples to do? Following Jesus: Create I am a Follower of Jesus badges for each of your family members. Take turns sharing what you can do this week to show you are a follower of Jesus. Hand Craft Lambs: Trace your child s hand on black construction paper and cut out. Cover the palm with glue and attach cotton balls. Turn the hand so that four fingers are the feet, and the thumb is the lambs head! Don t forget to do your hand too! Concluding Prayer: Let us pray. Dear Jesus, thank You for inviting us to be Your followers. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Eucharist and Confirmation News! The journey is underway! Last week 50 students in grades 3 12 and their parents gathered to begin the preparation for full initiation into the Catholic faith. Will you journey with them? Stop by the Hospitality Area next weekend (Jan. 24/25), and choose the name of a student to pray for. Let s support these families on this holy journey to encounter the living Christ in Eucharist and in the Chrism Oil of salvation! Making Ordinary time Extra Ordinary! Nothing about Ordinary time needs to be ordinary! This is a time set aside for reflecting on and celebrating our call to follow Jesus day by day. The liturgical color is green which is a sign of hope. The Chi Rho is the symbol for this part of the liturgical year. Live out the season in a special way: Focus on God s abundance what new gift has God given you today? See every day as a celebration of God s love. Make ordinary tasks, like making dinner, and go a step further add a special dessert or candles to the table. Read about different saints and the extraordinary lives they lived. Talk about where you see God each day! Wishing you a happy Extra Ordinary season!
