On October 4, 2017, we will have the dedication of the new site of Our Lady of the Angels. Thus, we will be experiencing a leave taking of a gathering space in which for over 65 years we have shared happy times, sad times, joyful celebrations of the Sacraments and the love of a community. This is the heart of memories and the presence of God alive in our midst. What this means for each individual is profound and is to be cherished even in the excitement of moving into the new church. Telling these important stories and sharing them with others helps to honor our experiences and acknowledge our oneness in the body of Christ. Part of this transition requires renaming the current Church. With much consideration and conversation, a name has been chosen to reflect our Franciscan heritage and help people understand the new function for the space. It will be called: the San Damiano Auditorium. In this place, we will see opportunities for educational and spiritual enrichment, the fostering of community, providing a place where all are welcome. 3 LITURGY CONNECTION Celebrating St. Francis of Assisi this Week This Wednesday, October 4 ~ on the Feast of St. Francis ~ we will dedicate our new church. The evening before ~ on Tuesday, October 3 ~ we will celebrate the Transitus, or the memorial of the passing of St. Francis from earthly life to everlasting life. The Transitus The memorial of the passing of St. Francis Tuesday, October 3 at 7 pm in the new church Each year, lovers of St. Francis from all over the world solemnly gather to commemorate this touching event in his remarkable life. Francis died on the evening of October 3, just as the brothers were singing. On this night, we will recall some of the legends of Saint Francis while we encourage one another to live lives of praise. The Transitus uniquely celebrates our Franciscan identity by rooting ourselves ritually both in sacred scripture and the historical foundations of the brotherhood. The dessert potluck following Transitus Francis is rumored to have had a sweet tooth. Lady Jacoba used to bake almond cookies as a gift for him. In fact, she brought them to him the night he died. To celebrate that sweet memory, each year we have a dessert potluck by the poolside after the Transitus service. All are invited to bring something sweet to share! Saint Francis was a man with keen vision, exquisite sensitivity, a great heart, and a deep conviction of eternal values. Certainly, he was someone deserving of a great celebration of his gift to the world. Please come and join with the friars and celebrate his life and inspiration! Are you considering becoming Catholic? Are you seeking full initiation into the Roman Catholic Church? You are invited to explore A Journey in Faith: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) The RCIA is the formation process that prepares individuals for living the Christian life in the Roman Catholic tradition. The RCIA sessions began last Tuesday. These first five inquiry sessions are open and you are welcome to begin attending anytime. These inquiry sessions are designed to help you discern whether or not you want to continue in the process. Please contact Kathleen Garast at or Steve Zaccari at for more information. You can also us at rcia@ thecasa.org. Seeking RCIA Sponsors We are also seeking community members to walk with those individuals as Sponsors. Please call Jeff Rochford at for information. Gift Bearers for Mass At each weekend Mass, we invite people from the assembly to bring up the gifts of bread and wine, as well as a basket of food to represent the gifts that are collected for the good of the community and our genuine concern for the poor and hungry. If you and your family or group of friends would like to bring up the gifts at a particular Mass, please let us know. Perhaps you are celebrating a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary, or remembering a loved one who has died and would like to participate in the Mass in this way, or maybe you have guests visiting from out of town and would like to give them this experience. You all would need to arrive 20 minutes before Mass starts to go over the simple procedures. Let us know and the date and Mass time to norbert@thecasa.org. Iraq First Communion/Confirmation Orientation Session Next Sunday, October 8 Family Faith Activities October 1 The Twenty-Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time Today s Gospel could have been taken directly from our own family experiences. Can you think of a time when a family member spoke one thing but then did another? The actions of the first son can be considered a change of heart, or conversion. We don t know why he changed his mind and went out to work, but he did! The second son also had a change of heart, but not in the realm of conversion. Maybe his plan was to pacify his father while never having any intention of helping. Perhaps he became distracted, or something else came up. The point of the story today is to show that our actions speak louder than words, even with God. Jesus wants us to do more than pay lip service to the Gospel. He wants us to be transformed by His word in our hearts and in our actions. Gather your family and ask, "When was a time I said 'yes' to God, even if it was hard?" Read Matthew 21:28-32 and discuss: What does the father ask his sons to do? Which son changes his mind? What does this story teach us about making a good choice? Lived Faith: Brainstorm Christian actions and list them on a poster board. Place it in a prominent area in the house for all to see. Have the family place a sticker next to each action as it is demonstrated during the week. Concluding Prayer "Father, we sometimes say, Yes, but our actions say, No. Help us to be faithful to do what You have called us to do. Amen. 5 YOUTH MINISTRY What role do you play in the Church? In your community? Here in the Italian town of Foligno, Angelina of Montegiove started a monastery for a group of Third Order Franciscan women. They had this keen sense that they should be able to govern themselves and work out in the community. Unfortunately, the Church at the time kept telling them they had to be governed by friars and they must be enclosed like all other nuns. They insisted that Francis and Clare would have upheld their ideals. Today, women like Sister Claudia (center) still live there, govern themselves, and serve the community. The frescoes on the walls remind them of the Saints (left) who inspire courage and scriptural women (right) who held important roles in the lives of God's people and in the Church. They are reminded as they pass these paintings each day that they are called to humility and charity as they live out their call to serve. Sister Claudia reminded us that we have that same call whether we are religious or lay people. We are called to serve boldly. 7 ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAMS St. Francis Retreat Friday, October 6 Sunday, October 8 with Fr. Dan Horan, OFM The Name of God is Relationship: Exploring Prayer in the Franciscan Tradition The Casa welcomes Fr. Dan Horan back for this year's St. Francis Retreat. While some philosophers claim that the name of God is "pure being" and some theologians claim that the primary name of God is "the good," Fr. Dan Horan, OFM, suggests that the name of God is best understood as "relationship." Beginning with the way that God reveals who God is to humanity throughout Scripture and moving to take a deeper look at what the wisdom of St. Francis of Assisi and the spiritual tradition that bears his name tells us about God, this retreat encourages contemporary women and men to reconsider how they imagine their Creator, how they experience prayer, and how they renew their understanding of faith in the modern world. Fee: $150 Commuter, $240 Private Room w/bath, $175 Shared Room w/bath. Pre-registration required. Healing of Memories: A Retreat For Veterans Friday, October 6 Sunday, October 8 with Sheila Laughton This program is designed to help victims of emotional, psychological, and spiritual wounds inflicted by war, human rights abuses, and other traumatic circumstances. 10 VISION CORNER You just never know Last year, the Franciscan Renewal Center received a very large gift from the estate of a man that we did not know anything about. It was a question that would rise to the surface every so often, but with all that was underway, it was easy to set aside. Several months ago, in going through some documents, Allison Brown shared with me an address that was linked to this gift last year. I sent off an to another unknown person with a hope of some sort of why behind this most generous gift to us. In my mind, there had to be a reason that this place was special to him. Weeks went by and then I received a phone call from a gentleman named Russ, who was attached to the . Russ had befriended our donor years ago and what a story behind it all. It seems our donor had been a recluse who made very few friends and had little use for most people. He was not a wealthy man he simply did not spend any money on himself or anyone. He had a very sad childhood and had little love in his life until he met his wife, who made up for all that he did not have as a child. All was good until she died twenty years ago and our donor became consumed in his loss. Someone suggested that he contact the Franciscan Renewal Center to help him with his overwhelming grief. He came here and met with Fr. Peter Kirwin, who helped him move forward with the life that was left for him. So, here s the why behind our donor leaving such a large gift to us: this man repeatedly told Russ that he really liked the Franciscan Renewal Center because no one ever tried to get him to become a Catholic or clean up or dress nicer before he came for his counseling. Everyone that he encountered here was kind to him and welcoming and he never forgot that. I know for myself, I smile thinking that our donor must be very proud, as he watches from above. His gift ensures that the help that he received back in 1997 continues today so that others consumed with their respective grief can also see that love never really ends and being kind is the start of it all. Open seating is limited and will begin at 5:30 pm. You are invited to celebrate the new church with these special events leading up to the dedication! Open House and Docent Tours after all Masses: September 30 and October 1 Children's Concert and Docent Tours: October 1 beginning at 3 pm Transitus Service, the celebration of the passing of St. Francis of Assisi, followed by a dessert potluck at the poolside: Tuesday, October 3 at 7 pm Please note that the building will be considered 100% finished when the contractors complete a prepared list of outstanding items to be corrected or accomplished. Managing that list will continue through October. These tasks will not interfere with Masses being held in the new church. Thank you for being part of this historic journey! thecasa.org RENEWAL
