3 Franciscan Renewal Center Peace. Renewal. Good. Dear Friends, As you know, the Franciscan Renewal Center ("the Casa") is about Renewing Lives through Spiritual Growth, Healing & Transformation, and Service to Others. The Casa's new catalog for Winter & Spring, 2017 is your invitation to a wealth of possibilities in all three areas: Healing & Transformation through Retreats, Counseling, Spiritual Direction, and Workshops; Spiritual Growth through Classes, Courses, Retreats, Prayer, and Worship; Service to Others through the many ministries supported by the Faith in Action outreach. This catalog continues the new format introduced last time, but with one significant improvement based on input from you: now, the calendar listing is right at the front of the publication, so you can easily find a chronological listing of every event in the coming season. This offers the benefit of a table of contents as well as a handy planning resource. Even more important than the format of the catalog, however, is what it represents: a constellation of opportunities for you to grow in faith, to experience renewal, and to share the Casa experience with friends and family members. Since 1951, the Casa has been renewing lives through: Spiritual Growth The Casa provides a safe place for the spiritual growth of all people. Lives are changed here! Healing and Transformation The Casa is a welcoming center for prayer, healing and transformation. We help people enrich their lives with spiritual meaning, a sense of belonging, and connection. Serving Others Following the model of Saint Francis, the Casa nurtures everyone in our community and our world especially the most vulnerable by supporting, healing and empowering lives. Take some time to browse this beautiful book, and then keep it somewhere close by for easy reference. Find the retreat, the class, the workshop, or the service opportunity that speaks to your heart, and enjoy the welcoming, supportive, and renewing atmosphere of the Casa. On behalf of all who have been involved in creating these programs and this catalog, blessings, peace, and good to you and your loved ones. Sincerely yours, Father Joe Schwab, OFM Executive Director For information about the Conventual Church of Our Lady of the Angels, sacraments, catechesis or any of our programs or offerings, go to thecasa.org or call

RETREATS Healing of Memories for Veterans Friday, May 12 Sunday, May 14 Fr. Michael Lapsley, SSM The Healing of Memories for Veterans Workshop is a two day overnight workshop held at the Franciscan Renewal Center. It was created by Father Michael Lapsley, an Anglican missionary priest. In 1990, he suffered the loss of his hands and the sight in one eye from a letter bomb that was sent to him in Zimbabwe by a supporter of the proapartheid government in South Africa. He later founded the Healing of Memories Institute (healing-memories.org). The workshop was designed to help victims of emotional, psychological and spiritual wounds inflicted by war, human rights abuses and other traumatic circumstances. The workshop has been held for over 70 veterans in Arizona with excellent results. Veterans who attend feel that the experience has been a major step in their healing process. The following quotes are typical of the reaction of veterans after the workshop: Francis and the Cosmic Christ Friday, May 5 Sunday, May 7 Check-in Friday, 5:00 pm Fr. Michael Crosby, OFM Cap Francis is known far and wide for his integration of creation with his faith in God. Much more than the prototype for a lawn ornament, Francis truly sees God through God's creation. Further, Franciscan tradition holds that Christ would have come into the world with or without original sin, since He loves His Creation so much that He would ultimately become a part of it. This retreat will explore this powerful theme under the guidance of a worldrenowned lecturer, author, and retreat leader. Personal Spiritual Direction will be available. Retreat fee including meals: $140; with lodging $225 single, $175 double per person. Pre-registration required. It (the workshop) definitely gave me hope and identified and gave me awareness of where to go from here and where I should focus. I have a better grasp of my experiences from my last deployment and the negative hold they have had on me. I feel as if I have made progress in working through these experiences, owning what I am, letting go of the rest and moving towards freedom and healing. Retreat fee: Free for Veterans. Pre-registration required. Call Mike Wold, This program is provided free to veterans through a grant from the Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation in honor of Father Ray Bucher, OFM. Michael Crosby is a Capuchin Franciscan living in downtown Milwaukee in a parish that serves the urban poor, homeless, and marginalized. He proclaims the gospel of God's Trinitarian reign, calling for conversion that will bring about Trinitarian relationships of equality at all levels "on earth as it is in heaven." Specifically, he encourages a spirituality of discipleship for U.S. and other "first world" Catholics. He has authored 17 books, the latest of which have received numerous awards in the US and Canada. 20 Call to register l Register online at thecasa.org 21

In this journaling session, we will examine ways in which you can be in the midst of noise, turmoil, troubles and still be able to heal and find the calm in your heart. If you have already taken the introductory workshop, The Joy of Journaling, you will find this class an advanced program on journaling with a specific focus on finding peace and calm in your life. Note: Bring your favorite pen and a blank journal Based on biblical values and rooted in Scripture, Catholic Social Teaching invites us to live our faith, deeply, while attending to the signs of the times. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came to bring glad tidings to the poor liberty to captives recovery of sight to the blind (Lk 4:18-19), and who identified himself with the least of these, (Mt 25:40). Join Laura as we explore the key themes and principles of Catholic Social Teaching as they apply to peacemaking and the common good, and how they shape our call to lives of love and service in the world. 19 SERIES SERIES Thematically related, individual educational events; one need not attend all offerings in the series MARCH 19: PREPARING OURSELVES FOR DEDICATION Dedicating a new church building is a major celebration of the universal Church. The ritual itself is a rare and profound experience: anointing the walls and the altar, the first use of the space, the setting aside of this structure for one purpose: worshipping God. MAY 21: GETTING TO KNOW THE NEW By this time, depending on the status of the new building, we will have an opportunity to explore some of the specific characteristics that make it our own, whether virtually or otherwise. Let s prepare to embrace what this new structure, devoted to serving the Body of Christ at prayer, has to offer. SERIES Straight Talk Theology Sundays, 9:00 10:40 am 3rd Sunday of each month, January May, (No session in April) William Cieslak, OFM Cap This winter, Fr. Bill continues with his focus on the Liturgy, in the context of our new church construction and how our transition from the present worship space will affect us. Fr. Bill will explore the meaning and implications of the building of a church (building) by the Church (People of God). It s hard to imagine a better presenter for these topics. A Twilight Retreat Series A House for the People of God: Floor Plans for God s Plan Tuesdays, January 17, February 21 and March 21 Three monthly sessions. Attend all, or as many as you wish. Dinner at 6:00 pm, followed by presentation from 7:00 8:30 pm Anne Connor, Art Historian, Member, Casa Fine Arts Committee Art Historian Anne Connor, in cooperation with the Casa Fine Arts Ministry, presents a series of lively sessions on the development of places designated for worship beginning in the 5th century, when buildings began to be purpose-built for worship, moving through the various periods in Church history, and concluding with the worship spaces of the Vatican II era. As always, if current events at or near the time of any presentation warrants it, Fr. Bill may address another topic instead of what is planned. Fee: No set fee. Donations gratefully accepted at each presentation. Through brilliant visuals and an engaging discussion, Anne will help you to see how the tradition of the worship space has evolved through the centuries. There is also a Franciscan element to this topic, and Anne will help you see its influence. JANUARY 15: WHAT ABOUT THE LAWN CHAIRS? We might think of those attending Mass outside in the sunshine as an "overflow" group, but many actually choose to be there. What's it going to be like, with everyone indoors, with no option to sit out in the sun and listen to the Mass? The outdoor aspect of half in, half out isn t going to be an option. A choice is coming: do we commit to being fully integrated into the worship community, or? FEBRUARY 19: GOOD GRIEF! One of the surprising aspects of moving from a familiar, even if imperfect, worship space into a new church is grief! There is a sense of loss, even as we achieve the fulfillment of a dream. It s a joyful moment, a major accomplishment, and an important step in our growth! Yet we might feel sadness along with the joy. How will we preserve the intimacy and bond that our historical worship patterns have created, while moving into this new and wonderful space? January 17 February 21 March 21 Early Gathering Spaces for Worship: The Church begins to build churches designed and dedicated for worship The Romanesque Style The Gothic Cathedrals FEE: $30 per session, includes dinner.* Register for all three in advance for $75. * The Casa Dining Room now serves a vegetarian entrée at every meal. 32 Call to register l Register online at thecasa.org 33

26 WORSHIP & FAITHSHARING Faith Building with Faith in Action The Faith in Action Ministry offers intensive educational and formational programs in partnership with JustFaith Ministries. Participants are empowered to develop a passion and thirst for justice and to express this passion in concrete acts of social ministry in their church and in the community at large. For more information, contact Patti Sills-Trausch, Director of Faith in Action Ministry: socialconcerns@thecasa.org. JustFAITH The JustFaith program begins in late-september and ends in May/June. JustFaith focuses on discipleship and the call to be about God s dream of justice and compassion in a world scarred by poverty. Meeting weekly, small groups employ books, videos, discussion, prayer, retreats and handson experiences. JustMatters Offered in 6 or 8-week modules, Just Matters allows participants to focus on a particular current social justice topic. The general format for these topic-focused modules is prayer, readings, videos, speakers and dialogue. JustMatters allows a group of 8 to 15 people to give sustained attention to a specific area of concern and culminating in a call to engaged action. EngagingSpirituality Engaging Spirituality is a 26-week spiritual journey for small groups that explores the connection between prayerful presence and social action by applying contemplative wisdom to the needs and possibilities of our times. New group forms each October. JustScripture Just Scripture meets on the second Sunday of the month from 9:00 am until 10:50 am (this is after the 7:30 am Mass and before the 11:00 am Mass). In Just Scripture we invite you to join with others and share how God speaks to you through Scripture. No pre-registration is required, you can just drop in and there is no cost associated with the session. People who attend find the time spent with Just Scripture to be a special time to meet with members of the community and to share God s Word. A scripture reading is selected that is two to four weeks in the future. This is done so notes on the discussion can be collected and shared with our Friars, our Deacon and the liturgists. As they prepare the homilies and the services for the whole community, our notes serve as a unique insight into the reflections of the community on the Word of God. The richest reward for all has been the profound and personal insights shared in these sessions. Just Scripture discussions provides nourishing food for thought and prayer. Upcoming meeting dates are: January 8, February 12, March 12, May 14, June 11, July 9, August 13. Please check the bulletin for room locations.
