2 THE CONVENTUAL CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS A Note from Brian Brass players are tough to get for Easter; and if you re fortunate enough to know someone without a standing gig, you better book him early. That s why I was elated when I discovered my college roommate, Tim, played trumpet. He wasn t Catholic, but I didn t care; I wanted a trumpet for Easter! After Mass, though, the first thing he asked me was, so you guys do this every week? Thinking he was talking about the holiday hoopla, I explained that Easter was different. Well, yeah, he replied, but it s the same service each time, right? All the ritual stuff and having communion each week it s pretty cool. At the same time, I was taking a class where the principal study text was Mircea Eliade s The Sacred and the Profane. The author asserts that repeating a ritual action mystically connects that instance to all others like it, past, present, and future, and that something which is held to be sacred provides a point of orientation for how we live our lives. Granted, most religious studies academics snub their noses at Eliade these days. But for those who believe, especially us as Catholic Christians, isn t it the truth? Sure, we have our own style of worship here, but we generally celebrate Mass in the same manner and with the same readings and prayers as all other Catholics throughout the world. When the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ, we use the same words as countless generations before us, clear back to Jesus himself. And when we receive Eucharist every week (or even daily, if we desire), it continually centers us and helps us to live rightly in the world. So I guess Tim was right. That is pretty cool. 3 LITURGY CONNECTION Special Collection Next Week Next week we will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering. For those of you who have opted to use the Collection Envelope Boxes, you will find an extra envelope for this special collection in your box. There will be only one collection during mass, so please drop both envelopes (your weekly Casa gift & special collection gift) in the collection basket. In case you forget them, you can always request an extra envelope at the Front Desk. Do you use our envelope system? Our envelope system is one of the best ways to manage your financial gifts to the Casa. If you would like to begin, please contact Rosa at ext.121 or rosa@thecasa.org Simple Thoughts... Last week, on Trinity Sunday, we celebrated God as a relationship and our invitation to be a part of that relationship. Today we celebrate a way we experience our participation in that relationship; The Eucharist. ~ No one sacrament displays the humility of God more. Our God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to live in relationship with us. Jesus promised to never leave us, and He fulfills that promise though the gift of the Holy Spirit and, in a unique way, His true presence in the Eucharist. This humble, simple piece of bread is transformed into the Body & Blood, Soul and Divinity of God so that we may always continue a physical relationship with Him. He is still with us. His life gives us life. When we receive Him, we, the mystical body of Christ here on this earth, receive the grace, through the Holy Spirit, to become His true presence. We become a tabernacle. Not a tabernacle to hold this gift inside, but one that carries Christ out the doors of our church and into the world that longs to be in relationship with God. Our second reading reminds us that in The Eucharist, we are all one, united. God s Trinitarian relationship extends to us, and through the Eucharist, to the entire world. Just as God was faithful to the Israelites by providing manna in the desert, He is faithful to us by providing true bread from heaven, bread that unites us in love as one body, in relationship with our loving God and gives us the strength to carry Christ in us to the world. ~ The Church Staff Collection Information 06/08/ 2014: $18, /09/ 2013: $18, We received 229 collection envelopes Thank you for your generous support! 4 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Family Faith Activities: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 22, 2014 On today s feast of the Body and Blood of Christ we celebrate that Jesus is present in the Eucharist. Jesus is also present in the people who gather together for Eucharist throughout the world. When we eat and drink the meal of Eucharist we show that we re part of the body of Christ. Ask each of your family members to recall a special meal that they have participated in. Read John 6:51-58 and discuss: What does Jesus tell his followers about bread from heaven? What will happen to those who eat the bread from heaven? What does Jesus say about his flesh and blood? One Body Activity: Take a large piece of paper or poster board and draw a large circle. Have your family fill in the circle by drawing different faces, using different shades of skin, to represent all the people in the world in God s family. Or take old magazines and have your family cut out figures to put into the circle! Abracadabra, Making Food Appear Activity! What a great surprise for someone to receive food from an unexpected source. How can your family make food appear as a surprise gift to someone? Here are some ideas: An elderly person, who lives alone or a family suffering from a job loss or loss of a family member. How about taking food to a food bank or creating a picnic for the kids in the neighborhood? Be creative! Concluding prayer: Let us pray. Loving God, we are happy to be members of your family. Help us to live together as your children. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. Eucharist means.thanksgiving! Today s feast of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) originated in France in the mid-thirteenth century and was extended to the worldwide church by Pope Urban IV in We are called to focus on two manifestations of the Body of Christ first the Holy Eucharist and second the Church. At every Mass our attention is called to the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Today s Gospel gives us one of the firm foundations of the institution of Eucharist so that as we receive in faith, we receive the bread that will give us everlasting life. We also focus on the Body of Christ as it is present in the Church us! As we partake in Eucharist we are brought together as one body, fed, transformed and inspired to go out into the world and share Christ s love! Here are how some of the Family Catechesis and First Communion students described their experience of Eucharist: (paraphrased) The Kaminski family shares, that receiving Eucharist is peaceful and comforting. When I receive I feel refreshed, renewed and strengthened. After coming to Mass we leave the church happy and charged up to do our best. Natalie and Peter Eng felt closer to God and blessed after receiving their First Communion this year. Zach Carrick says that receiving Eucharist is exciting and makes me feel like I m more in the presence of God. Zach also shared after his First Communion, I felt happy! I couldn t wait to receive again! I pay more attention at mass now and help my brothers to do that too. May we mirror these comments and excitement about Eucharist! As we are fed, may we then go forth as an offering of ourselves to the service of others. Happy Feast! Yet, at the deepest level, many of us long for a more conscious experience of God s presence and love. Spiritual direction is really not about being directed. Rather, it is very much about being encouraged to draw closer to God. Healing of Memories Workshop Helps Veterans on Their Path to Healing On the weekend of May 16-18, twenty veterans took a step along their path of healing by attending the Healing of Memories Workshop. Led by Fr. Michael Lapsley, a victim of trauma himself, the workshop is designed to let veterans explore, the anger, loss, grief, and guilt that is connected to their personal histories and war experience. At the core, they get to tell their stories in a safe environment. Some quotes from the participants: I have been able to release myself from the personal prison I had put myself into. This is a blessing and a healing. I would recommend this workshop to anyone who experienced trauma in his/her life. I have waited 24 years to tell my story. Many thanks to the Outreach to Veterans and Military Families ministry for bringing this workshop to the FRC, and for doing the work to make it a wonderful experience for the participants. Thanks also goes to the members of the Casa community who sponsored veterans to attend and who raised the funds to be able to provide this workshop free to all the veterans.. 10 Vision Corner 5,000 (and counting) reasons to give thanks There s a theme that runs through the Casa s community GRATITUDE. And on August 17, 2011, a committee was formed with the sole purpose of thanking people. The first thing we did was get out the Casa s register and call everyone on it, says Beth Koehnemann, founding chair of the Gratitude Committee. We are grateful for everyone who comes here. Now in its third year, the committee just celebrated its 5,000th thank-you call. These eight volunteers make every effort to reach all who have shared time, talent or treasure with the Casa (please be sure the Casa has your correct contact information). They also are responsible for the hundreds of hand-written thank you cards placed in the rooms of our overnight guests. Marilyn Kruzich joined the team after Kathleen Eucharistic Minister. I was almost in tears by the end of the Garast called to thank her for serving as a conversation, says Marilyn. In life, we just don t get as many thank yous or pats on the back as we need. I ve served on committees for more than 60 years, says Beth. I don t think I ve seen a more cohesive group, and they love what they do!
