I love Christmas, but I confess that some Christmassy lyrics (like those) put a chill down my spine. I don t think my body, mind or spirit could handle it if every day were Christmas it s just too much pressure! But, now that the Christmas season is behind us, I am filled with some very special memories. It was a poignant Christmas for me personally. In the days preceding the performances of Buon Natale Greccio, I was still re-writing some of the script, wanting desperately to make it as relevant as possible. As family crises seemed to reach a full crescendo, and the technical aspects of the show were weighing heavily on us all, I awoke one morning with a gift in my head the final scene of the script arrived to me in the waking remnants of a foggy dream. Little did I know they were for me. During this holiday season, when we find ourselves in the midst of laughter and revelry, may those happy sounds find harmony with the joyous song of the angels, calling us to simply come and adore. When we find ourselves in the poverty of inconvenient circumstances or facing hardships as we all will from time to time let us look around and find a bit of hay to bring some measure of comfort. When things look bleak and we can't find our way, let us just sit patiently and humbly in that absolute darkness and wait for our eyes to adjust, until we can see the light of that crystal star that always inevitably appears to light our way and lead us onward. The image that remains most strongly in my mind is that of the hay. In our new church, the motif of hay will be there year round. Look for it. It will be reminding us to celebrate Christmas every day. Keep looking for the hay. 3 LITURGY CONNECTION Journey in Faith -- RCIA News This weekend we celebrate the Rite of Calling Canditates to Continuing Conversion. In the Diocese of Phoenix this rite is celebrated at the cathedral by Bishop Olmsted, as he recognizes them for the spiritual journey they are taking. The Rite of Recognition for our candidates for full communion with the church is for individuals who are one with us already through their baptism, but will complete their initiation with their first communion and confirmation at the Easter Vigil. Please keep all of our Catechumens and our Candidates in your prayers as they continue on their journey to the Great Easter Vigil. In the various rites throughout the RCIA process, the community of Our Lady of the Angels has accepted a ministry of love, example, hospitality and hope to these Catechumens and Candidates. Your prayerful support is appreciated and necessary. Please take a moment in the coming weeks to greet those who are on this journey of faith and offer your personal support. Special Collection Next Weekend Next weekend, we will participate in the annual Special Needs collection for the Church in Latin America, the Church in Africa, and the Church in Eastern Europe. For those of you who have opted to use our Collection Envelope Boxes, you will find an extra envelope for this purpose in your box. As is our custom, there will be only one collection during Mass, so please drop this envelope along with your envelope for your gift to the Casa in the collection basket. In case you do not usually use the weekly envelope program, or if you forget your envelope, you can always get an extra envelope for this collection at the Front Desk. Winter Ordinary Time Today is the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time, meaning ordered or numbered time, is not a season like Lent and Advent, nor does it have a set number of days or weeks: it is composed of either thirty-three or thirtyfour weeks. It is an ordering of Sundays whose number depends on the date of Easter, as well as those Sundays that are superseded by any solemnities that fall on a Sunday in each year. Ordinary Time during the winter is an arbitrary designation and includes those days that fall between the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord and Ash Wednesday. In fact, the day after the Baptism of the Lord begins the First Week in Ordinary Time; hence the following Sunday is the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Follow me. Come after me. These are Jesus invitations to the first disciples. They are also His invitations to us. During Ordinary Time, the meaning of discipleship centers on our willingness to journey with Jesus, who heals, casts out demons, feeds the hungry, and dines with tax collectors and sinners. We might occasionally be afraid of what our calling entails. Fright might overcome us as we hear of the suffering a life of faith entails. We might wonder, why follow the One who suffered and died? Yet we know the end of our Master s journey. To Him belongs Resurrection. Resurrection is His promise to His disciples. But first, during these eight weeks, we must decide whether we wish to come after Jesus, deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus. Is this journey for us once again? We have much to learn about discipleship in the coming weeks. Jesus will teach us all we need to know so that we, too, will be able to heal and teach and feed and love as He did. The rhythm of the liturgical seasons reflects the rhythm of life with its celebrations of anniversaries and its seasons of quiet growth and maturing. If we are to mature in the spiritual life and increase in faith, we must descend the great mountain peaks of Christmas and Easter in order to pasture in the vast verdant meadows of Ordinary Time. 4 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION 7 Spiritual Practices for Everyday Life It takes about three weeks to form new healthy habits. Help your family become spiritually balanced by picking and choosing (or creating your own) from these activities each day. Keep a chart and at the end of three weeks see how you did! Did the spiritual scale balance out in a positive way? Experience something natural. Go outside, spend time with a pet, tend a garden, gaze at the stars. Give thanks for God s great gifts. Pause throughout the day to take three deep breaths. If desired, repeat a psalm refrain such as Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10) as you breathe. Count your blessings. At the end of the day take an inventory of the people, experiences and sensations that were part of your day. Give thanks for the ways that you were blessed. Let the words of others inspire you. Read Scripture or prayer, reflect on a book or website. Allow those words to guide you through the day. Connect with someone who feeds your soul. Call, text, , write a note or pay a visit to a friend. Remind yourself anew of the grace of good people in your life. Fast from the news. For the entire day refrain from reading, watching or listening to news. Instead, pay attention to the sights, smells, sounds and tastes that the day brings. Give thanks for the gift of your senses. Give yourself totally to the task at hand. Refrain from daydreaming, complaining or wishing away the work you have to do. Instead, revel in the wonder of using your hands, your mind, your ideas and creativity. Give thanks for the gift of work. For more ideas on family faith formation visit Jan. 15th Family Faith Activities Second Sunday of Ordinary Time Today we hear John the Baptist cry out, giving witness about who Jesus is. John uses the titles Lamb of God and the Son of God," leaving no doubt as to who Jesus was. John s witness is an excellent example of what it means to be a disciple. Through our own baptism we are also called to make Jesus known to the world by the witness of our lives, especially in our families. We are constantly leading and serving our children with unconditional love. As we show this love to our children, they begin to understand the unending love that Jesus has for them. Gather your family; come up with different titles for Jesus that you are familiar with. Read John 1:29-34 and discuss: What names are given to Jesus? Why does John tell the others about Jesus baptism? How does Jesus baptize? Lamb of God: John called Jesus the Lamb of God." Lambs are mild animals but were used in sacrifice offerings. Talk about what uses a lamb has. Talk about Jesus as a Lamb," especially in regards to an innocent man that was crucified. Using construction paper, markers and cotton balls, draw lambs with a cross in the background to make the connection between this humble animal and Christ. Concluding Prayer: O God, thank You for loving us. Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to become one of us. Help us to live as followers of Jesus. Amen. 10 VISION CORNER Personal Return on Investment Upon my employment at the Franciscan Renewal Center many years ago, I quickly discovered that not only did I have a family amongst coworkers, but I also found my new church home. The Franciscan Renewal Center has been such a blessing to me. The priests and brothers are caring people who take true interest in your life. They are here to guide and pray with you on your journey. It is a very joy-filled place to worship. I look forward to sharing the Franciscan Renewal Center with family, friends and the greater community. It s exciting to watch the construction of the new church, the renovations occurring for the Children s Liturgy Center, and soon construction will begin on the Community Life Center. The expansion is necessary, and funding will be needed to sustain it. It takes a lot of resources to maintain this 25-acre campus. From basic operations, such as telephone service and copy paper to electricity and water bills, staffing, landscaping, pool supplies, and capital improvements, just to name a few. However, thanks to members of the Casa s Tau Society, we will be able to cover ongoing operations and ensure that the Franciscan Renewal Center continues to be a place of healing and transformation, spiritual growth and service to others. Members of the Tau Society make a five-year pledge of $1,000 or more per year and are vital to sustaining the Casa s commitment to be a nurturing place where relationships come first and all are always welcome. This ongoing support is crucial to the Franciscan Renewal Center. Please consider joining the Casa s Tau family in Just as in any family, your commitment today will benefit many generations in the future.
