Mack, CPA Treasurer William Anger, Esq., Vice Chair Arlene Davidson, Secretary Phone Fax Website thecasa.org I recently read an editorial by David Brooks in The New York Times on How to Leave a Mark on People. He spoke of institutions as being thick or thin. This has given me some thought about the Casa. Where do we fall? David says, Some institutions leave a mark on you, and some you pass through with scarcely a memory. A thick institution becomes part of a person s identity and engages the whole person: head, hands, heart and soul. So, thick institutions have a physical location, often cramped, where members meet face-to-face on a regular basis. Like a dinner table or a packed gym or assembly hall. Or, like the Church of Our Lady of the Angels during Sunday Masses. What David is basically saying is that a thick organization is where people interact with one another. They volunteer their time and skills without looking for recompense or rewards, but do so to help make the group strong and at the same time ready to reach out to others sharing their God-given gifts that we all have, no matter how small or large. At the Casa, we are here to make each other strong, so we stand together and give our support financially, physically and spiritually. We are bonded together by being fed with the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ each time we celebrate the Eucharist and then go forth to feed our sisters and brothers who are unable to join us. We also lay out the Welcome Mat to one and all, never making distinctions. So, let us continue to have a thick community and continue to be generous with what God has given you and me. By living this way, we are proclaiming the Resurrected Christ to one another. Hallelujah! You are a gift. Fr. 3 Infant Baptisms this weekend LITURGY CONNECTION This weekend, we are celebrating infant baptisms here at the Church of Our Lady of the Angels. Because the community has such an important role in welcoming new members, baptisms are celebrated at our regular liturgies. The Resurrection bas relief sculpted by Deborah Luke The Stations of the Resurrection Wednesday, May 17, 2017 ~ at 7 pm In the Church of Our Lady of the Angels (Community Dinner at 6pm. See page 9.) Featuring the Casa choir and musicians, presenting some of their most beloved music from Holy Week. On the first day of the week, Jesus arose from the dead. While no one actually saw that specific event, many had experiences of/with Him after He rose. And, like His friends, we are all called to be witnesses of this central faith event: The Resurrection. During Lent, the Stations of the Cross are familiar and popular and each year, on Good Friday, the Casa community presents a powerful experience of The Stations of the Cross. And yet, it is the passion, death and resurrection which are the pattern for our living. The Stations of the Resurrection reflect upon experiences of the Risen Lord from Easter morning to Pentecost highlighting the continuing presence of the Risen Lord, as we recognize His guidance and leadership through the events of our living sometimes in the simplest moments. Not only does the community have a part to play in the baptism of children, the baptismal rite invites each of us to call to mind our own baptism. Do you know the date of your baptism? Do you remember the church where you were baptized? The priest or deacon who baptized you? Are there any photos to look at? If so, perhaps you can share them with your family today. If you are a Godparent, today would be a good day to reach out and connect with your Godchildren... or, Godchildren can reach out to Godparents. Let s not miss all the rich opportunities that this celebration offers us, not the least of which is the reminder to examine our own faith life. For more information about having children baptized here, or to begin making the arrangements, please call the Casa at ext. 163 and speak to Donna Kinzie or her at donna@thecasa.org. (Parents may call and arrange for the baptism prior to the birth of the child.) The baptism preparation sessions are scheduled several weeks before the baptism, and space is limited for each liturgy. Mother s Day... coming up on May 14 Mother s Day is in a few weeks, and we will remember and pray for our mothers who have given us life and love for those who are with us as well as those who have left our sight and passed on. And we give thanks... for as a loving mother generously provides for her children, so does God watch over us. To recognize and honor our mothers that weekend, you are invited to bring to Mass photographs of your mothers and grandmothers, Godmothers, stepmothers living or deceased. There will be tables in the Church to display them. (Please be sure to take the pictures home with you after Mass. ) May we honor our mothers always with a spirit of profound respect! 4 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION May Day and Mary This month we especially remember and honor our Blessed Mother Mary. Not just one day in May, but the whole month! Here are some ways to celebrate with your family: Recite the Rosary with your family (what a beautiful way to learn more about this prayer). Put a picture of Mary on a family altar and add fresh flowers in a vase. Take a road trip to find pictures and statues of Mary at different churches. Use your own creativity to find more ways to honor the Blessed Mother this May! Family Faith Activities April 30 Third Sunday of Easter We can imagine the feelings of the two disciples in today s reading. They are leaving their community in Jerusalem. Their friend Jesus has been crucified. Their hope is gone. They are trying to make sense of what has occurred, so that they can put the experience behind them. Jesus joins them, walking and talking together, with Jesus interpreting the Scriptures. At the breaking of the bread, their eyes were opened. We too must sometimes travel sad roads. Like the disciples, we can find courage and strength in Scripture, if we allow the Lord to open our minds and hearts to the Word. What would happen if we allowed the words of Scripture to burn in our hearts like the disciples did? What if we, like the disciples, have faith enough to clearly recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread? With the breaking open of the Word and the Bread, we could enthusiastically go out into the world and be Jesus to those around us. Gather your family and discuss what special meals you share together. Read Luke 24:13-35 and discuss: Where are the disciples going? What are they talking about? Who joins the disciples on the road to Emmaus? Do the disciples know that Jesus is with them? What happens when Jesus shares a meal with His friends? Bread Baking: Bake bread together and consider each ingredient as you add it. For example, when you add flour, think of someone who holds things together for your family. When you add salt, think of who adds flavor to life, and when sugar is added, whose sweetness reflects God s love? Separately these ingredients are all good, but look at the result when they are combined and baked! Walking with Jesus: Cut out several tracings of feet, and put them out on a long path in a designated area. At the end of the feet path place a final foot with the word Jesus written on it. Now follow the footsteps that lead you to Jesus. Concluding Prayer: We thank you, God, for Your Son, Jesus. Help us to see the risen Jesus in others and in the world. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen. 7 FAITH IN ACTION MINISTRIES Peace Walk and Mindfulness Meditation Saturday, May 20, 9:00 am 3:00 pm with Rev. Marvin Brown There is no actual physical walking involved. Rev. Marvin Brown will share his thoughts and experience about nonviolence and peace from the Buddhist tradition. A part of the Season for Nonviolence is to explore a variety of peace and nonviolence practices especially to see what other faiths can teach us about peace. Mindfulness is the ability to be truly in the Present Moment and in the Present Moment we learn that we have choices. One of the choices that we have is how we act when we are upset. During the Peace Walk, which is an individual journey to find peace in oneself, we will learn to walk with our conflicts instead of speaking or acting in a less-than-kind way. Lunch will be the practice of Eating Mindfully. Fee per person: $45, includes lunch. Pre-registration required. Hot Topics Thursday, May 18, 7:00 9:00 pm with Mark Klym Lively discussions centered around a variety of Hot Topics that are of concern to people in Arizona and the Casa community. The topic will be announced and printed on flyers in the lobby and on thecasa.org. These are just some of the possible topics: Death penalty Economics Immigration Homelessness Hate Crimes/Tolerance Senior Care/Health At the Hot Topics program you'll learn to apply the use of nonviolent communication and facilitation skills along with Franciscan values as you tackle difficult, but critical issues, such as those listed above. Fee: $12, includes dessert and coffee/tea. Pre-registration required. Hot Topics Friday, June 16, 6:00 9:00 pm with Mark Klym The movies selected for Popcorn, Pizza and Peace nights reflect social issues that are associated with violence or can generate violent reactions. The goal is to discuss ways that will lead to nonviolence. Featured movies or documentaries will be minutes in length, with time planned for in-depth discussions of the films. Pizza and soft drinks are planned for 6:00 pm. The film will start approximately at 6:45 pm. (Title to be announced.) Immediately following the film, we'll have discussions in small groups, facilitated by Mark Klym. Popcorn, Pizza and Peace is an ongoing series that takes place twice a year. Fee: $12, includes pizza, refreshments, popcorn and the film. Pre-registration required. 10 VISION CORNER Last Call for the Donor Wall Over 1,100 donors have generously donated to the new church and overall capital campaign which supports infrastructure, the new Community Life Center, renovated and new lodging rooms, and administration to support the campaign. We are making one final call to all community members and beyond who would still like to be a part by allowing the opportunity to provide a pledge or one-time gift. This allows for recognition on the donor wall as well as supporting the sustainability of the capital elements. The donor plaque will be made of beautiful glass with the names etched onto it. This will be mounted in the narthex (vestibule) area of the new church. Our deadline for sharing the final list of donors to our glass vendor is June 1. This church was truly envisioned, designed, paid for and built by this generous community of believers. Please consider including your household as part of the financial -sustaining value of the church and other significant elements by making your donation in time to be included on our donor wall. We wish as many people as possible to be part of this historic time at the Franciscan Renewal Center. Please contact the sustainability office or myself and we will help you, or mail your donation with a memo that the gift is for inclusion on the donor wall and sustaining our capital maintenance. 12 Planning Your Legacy. When should a person start thinking about their legacy? When should they start the financial planning to ensure that their wishes will be honored in the future? Experts will tell you there is no right time, there is only now. Earlier this year, the Casa began offering a monthly workshop to walk with you as you consider your spiritual legacy. Now, the Casa offers you professional support as you consider your financial legacy. Did you know that: 70% of all Americans die without a will or trust. Three out of four people think leaving money to charity is a good idea, but only one in four do it. 95% of all legacy gifts are made through designations in a will, which is a relatively simple thing to do. Consider the Casa. Contact Mary Dunn, Director of the Endowment Initiative, , endowment@thecasa.org Spiritual Direction How is God present or absent in your life? In the midst of a busy life, many people find it difficult to notice God s action in their daily affairs. Yet, at the deepest level, many of us long for a more conscious experience of God s presence and love. A spiritual director/companion is trained to listen and encourage you to explore a closer relationship with God through conversation, listening and prayer. If you are curious about spiritual direction at the Casa, or would like to make an appointment, please contact Sharon Taszarek at , ext. 162 or sharon@thecasa.org. Secular Franciscan Order Secular Franciscans follow the OFS rule that requires us to spend time in community with our Franciscan brothers and sisters. We gather at least monthly. We support each other through the ups and downs of daily life. We pray together. We take opportunities to learn about our Church, our community and our world. The OFS Peace Fraternity meets monthly at the Casa. Brochures available in the lobby All are welcome! The Nativity bas relief has been removed from the current church pending installation in the new church. We are in the process of determining the best way to install the hearing loop. thecasa.org RENEWAL
