Mack, CPA Treasurer William Anger, Esq., Vice Chair Arlene Davidson, Secretary Phone Fax Website thecasa.org The feast of the Chair of St. Peter is coming up on February 22, so I d like to share some reflections on the continuing role of this saint in the church community. Authority comes from God for the sake of the Church in order to maintain the community as a unified body. In our culture we have a strong tendency to reject authority because it puts limits on personal freedom. We do accept authority in all kinds of ways, though. Medical specialists, police, education, traffic controls, financial experts are all examples. I think we all know that no organization survives without some type of unifying principle. This person or group needs to have the authority of character, while the authority of expertise and office are helpful. So, what s the example of Simon Peter about? Many people have written on Matthew 16: If we consider parallel quotes in Scripture about keys, we find that the master of the king s palace was described as having significant authority, symbolized by the keys (Isaiah, 2 Kings). In the Gospel, Simon is also given a title Peter or in Aramaic Kepha which means rock, the first time known that this word becomes a name. Peter is also noted far more frequently in the New Testament than any other apostle nearly 200 times. His role is often as spokesman or the first to do something even if he s wrong. His own failures are important because of his role to lead. It s good for all people to recognize that mistakes, sin and failures are part of leadership. Had Peter been less important, his failures would be less important. He s not described as perfect, but real. There are numerous examples of teachers in the early Church (from about the year 200 AD on) who spoke of Peter s distinct leadership role, including Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Origen, Cyprian, Cyril, Jerome, Ambrose, Augustine and others. While the expression of the role has changed over the centuries at times for the worse at the core is our understanding of the role of Peter as continuing over the centuries. Vatican II placed emphasis on the role of the pope as a ministry of unity to maintain the local churches as one in faith, charity, mission, ministry and sacraments. I encourage all of us to be grateful that the unifying leadership role of Peter continues in the Church and now is present in the person of Pope Francis. This is something to celebrate on the upcoming feast. May God give you peace. Fr. Joe Schwab, OFM, Church Vicar RENEWAL is published weekly by the Franciscan Renewal Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization 5802 E. Lincoln Dr., Scottsdale, AZ Federal Tax ID Printed by J.S. 3 LITURGY CONNECTION Has your contact information changed? We would love to be informed if you moved, changed phone numbers, switched addresses, changed the color of your hair (ok, not that one), got married, had a child or any other major change has taken place since you filled out the yellow form and registered with us. This way we can be sure we have the most up-to-date information, and you will not miss anything from us! To update any information, contact Rosa at ext. 121 or rosa@thecasa.org and she will be happy to assist you. Also, if you haven t registered, we invite you again to please do so. The information on the yellow form is vital to our ability to serve you best. Please see the front desk today and they will assist you. The Diocese of Phoenix s Charity and Development Appeal The annual Charity and Development Appeal (CDA) is underway. Thank you to everyone who gave a gift last weekend. Each and every person s gift is important. For those who have not yet completed a donor card, please join us. Your gift to the CDA supports local community and charitable organizations that assist individuals and families in need or in crisis. These organizations improve the lives of thousands of people across 4 Arizona counties (Mohave, Maricopa, Coconino and Yavapai). The CDA serves the needs of local communities beyond the boundaries of any one parish. As a result, more people are helped. More information can be found at dphx.org/cda. The Art & Environment Ministry One ministry that works behind the scenes is the Art & Environment team. Their job is to decorate and enhance the surroundings for all the major liturgical seasons and celebrations throughout the year at the Church of our Lady of the Angels. This ministry team is starting to think about the seasonal needs of the new church. What will Advent look like in the new church? What about Christmas? Or Lent? Or Easter? Or Ordinary Time? We certainly have some thinking and planning and creating to do. This must be done artfully, carefully, and mindfully. Additionally, we will continue to be celebrating Christmas and Holy Week in Palm Court. While this ministry is not a weekly commitment, the workdays are specific and can be strenuous. There is some need for crafting skills (sewing, flower arranging, decorating, etc.) but there is really a need for people with physical strength if you can climb a ladder while balancing a 9 foot Christmas tree on your shoulders, we need you! If you are interested in participating on the A&E team, please to norbert@thecasa.org. A brainstorming session to begin planning for the new church is coming soon. Are you feeling called to this ministry?? The 7th Sunday of Ordinary Time ~ Cycle A February 19, 2017 thecasa.org RENEWAL Page 3

Family Faith Activities Feb. 19th Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time We are being called to be perfect as God is perfect, which of course we cannot do. What we can do is to observe God s law, living a life of holiness. This is truly easier said than done. So then what are the options for us? When we are caught in the midst of difficulties and strife, aka family life, what do we do? Consider the challenge of Jesus of turning the other cheek during difficult times. No, we are not to tolerate abuse, but perhaps to consider the perspective of the other person. Yes, Jesus is calling us to be perfect in our relationships with one another. And in loving others as God loves us, we emulate the perfection of God. Gather your family and complete the following sentence I know I am loved by others when Read Matthew 5:38-48 and discuss: What is Jesus telling us to do when people are mean to us? What are we supposed to do for our enemies? What is Jesus calling us to be? Mealtime Memories: As you gather for meals, talk about how each member of the family is important. Share the goodness and beauty each family member has. Highlight special talents and skills which have made a difference in the life of the family. Share special qualities and how each person lives out God s love. Heart Prayer: Cut out a large red heart from construction paper. Ask each person in the family to write words from today s Gospel on the heart. Around the edge of the heart have everyone write their name in a border. Concluding Prayer: O Lord, You are kind and merciful. Like a compassionate father You do not deal with us according to our sins but according to Your own holiness. Help us to strive to be more like Your Son and to love one another. Amen. 7 FAITH IN ACTION MINISTRIES Brothers in Peace and Prayer Retreat Thich Nhat Hanh and Thomas Merton: Contemplative Peace Makers Friday, March 10 Sunday, March 12 Thich Nhat Hanh and Thomas Merton found a common connection in their belief that working for justice was a natural outgrowth of the contemplative life. Prayer and meditation give rise to engagement in the world, and action rooted in faith leads to contemplative consciousness. Fee per person, including meals: $140; with lodging $225 single, $175 double. Pre-registration required. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came to bring glad tidings to the poor liberty to captives recovery of sight to the blind (Lk 4:18-19), and who identified himself with the least of these, (Mt 25:40). Join Laura as we explore the key themes and principles of Catholic Social Teaching as they apply to peacemaking and the common good, and how they shape our call to lives of love and service in the world NOTE: A foundation course for the Nonviolence Leadership Certificate Program. Open to everyone. Fee: $45, includes lunch. Pre-registration required. 10 VISION CORNER Generations of Belonging Feeling like I belong here is a common statement that I have heard from hundreds of people after they have discovered the Casa. A friend invites them to a Discover the Vision tour or they are introduced to me after a Mass, and I see them again somewhere on campus or many times off. Invariably, they say the same thing, possibly with different wording but always around the comfort of being here and how much it means to them. I understand it because it is exactly how I feel. In 2013, I came out of early retirement to become a small part of a team working with Father Joe and Charlie to help the Casa move into the future and all that entails. Part of that future is the beautiful building under construction in the west parking lot. Our new Church will be there to be a place of welcome for those who built it and those we have yet to meet. This past Monday, we had our 2nd Winter Resident Renewing Lives Breakfast in the Casa Dining Room. The Friars and staff welcomed about 50 of our seasonal community members to a hearty breakfast prepared by Chef Elias and his crew. They loved the food and the program, but what they were most thrilled about was being back here at the Casa and once again feeling like they had contributed in some way to the future of the Casa. Since 1951, the Casa has been renewing lives through spiritual growth, healing and transformation, and serving others. When I first became a member of the Casa community, I was newly confirmed and so in love with everything Franciscan. I never realized at that time, years ago, how much it would all come to mean to me. I know that this is exactly where I was always headed and where I belong, and it is my honor to be able to help it stay as a place where All are Welcome and leave with a sense of belonging. Many people actually decide to donate to help get over their fear of needles. The actual drawing process should cause very little, if any, discomfort.
