Reflections from Africa Norbert Zwickl and others recently traveled to Zambia to teach Survival School - The Casa s leadership development program. 1 a.m. Lusaka, Zambia. I awakened suddenly, and tried to clear the fog of sleep to figure out what had happened. Other than the constant low roar of the 500,000 people living in the shanty town just beyond our fence, there was an eerie silence in the house. And total darkness. No electricity. Again. It does that sometimes for days in Zambia. We d been lucky so far on this trip. We hadn t lost electricity while we were teaching, so our Survival School PowerPoint presentations were not affected. Not knowing how long this outage would last had me concerned. But rather than worry, I consoled myself with memories of the previous day. We had just presented our Conflict Management workshop. Prior to this, I privately wondered if our content would be relevant to a group of very holy African nuns. But over the course of the day, we shared with them our curriculum and heard how they could relate it to their own lives. What we offered them was so welcomed. At one point, Sister Bonaventure exclaimed, This is it! We need this! And they all agreed. Peace is not the absence of conflict, but rather the presence of a reconciling spirit. Our Survival School tools were indeed going to help them manage their conflicts better. Those amazing women work as administrators of hospitals, hospices, orphanages, schools, and convents they work as teachers, nurses, and caregivers. They are smart, articulate, extremely competent in their areas of expertise AND they seek even stronger leadership skills. Ranging in age from 20 to 80, each one was hungry to grow. They already do significant work in Zambia, but are eager to do more. They re preparing to engage more in government positions, seeking to influence the infrastructure development of schools and hospitals. They feel called to missionary work in other African countries, namely Kenya. They are powerful advocates for the girl-child and have a positive impact on young women. They engage internationally with other congregations of nuns throughout the world. Their beautiful humility, allowed them to be eager and receptive students a teachers dream. They quickly processed our material and immediately applied it to their work. What a privilege to be with them. Survival School is offered twice a year at the Casa it s coming up in August. If you would like to begin, please contact Rosa at ext.121 or rosa@thecasa.org Collection Information 07/06/ 2014: $16, /07/ 2013: $13, LITURGY CONNECTION Simple Thoughts... Lord, You are good and forgiving. (Psalm 86) ~ Our readings today reveal God s mercy. From the start of the first reading, we hear of a God who cares for all. We respond with the praise of the psalm, proclaiming our God as merciful and gracious and abounding in kindness. In the Gospel, Jesus reveals God s patience. He allows everything to grow in mercy, then, in His time, He acts with justice. We are called to live with that same mercy. In the explanation of the parable of the weeds and the wheat, Jesus identifies all of the other characters (master, harvesters, weeds, and wheat), but not the servants ( slaves in the text). It is easy to automatically hear ourselves as the wheat, the ones trying to live a good life in the middle of the all the evil around us. But what would we hear if, instead, we place ourselves as the servants? Are we the ones who sometimes want to take it upon ourselves to uproot the weeds in the world just as the servants wanted to do? Are we the ones the master tells to be patient and let him handle it in His way and on His schedule? The first reading also suggests this, But though you are master of might, you judge with clemency, and with much lenience you govern us and you taught your people, by these deeds, that those who are just must be kind. Are we quick to judge, label, exclude, dismiss or try to uproot what we think isn t wheat? We must not only recognize God as merciful and forgiving with us, but also, as God s children, we must be merciful and forgiving with each other. It is not an easy task, but we are assured that the Spirit intercedes for us when we fall into weakness, even if that weakness is our self-righteousness. We are called to build God s Kingdom, and allow it to grow in His mercy. He is the just judge and we are His servants. With the Spirit, we can live justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God. ~ The Church Staff We received 224 collection envelopes Thank you for your generous support! 4 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Family Faith Activities July 20 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time In today s Gospel, Jesus tells a story about weeds and wheat. The weeds try to choke out the good seeds, but the sower does not get rid of the weeds right away. The weeds are allowed time to change. The good seeds represent the faithful and the weeds are evildoers. Jesus is the sower. This story shows how God allows time for the evildoer to change and grow in faith. In the end, the weeds get separated out and thrown away, and the faithful ones, the wheat, enjoy the harvest. Ask your family to share values in today s world that might be considered wheat and things that might be considered weeds. Read Matthew 13: and discuss: What does Jesus teach in this story about weeds and wheat? How does Jesus want us to grow? Why does God allow weeds to grow? Mustard Seed Activity: Show your family how small a mustard seed is. It is the smallest of all seeds and yet grows to be a tree large enough for birds to nest in! Using card stock, cut into index-card-size squares and decorate with the words: Big things come from little things like mustard seeds, and glue some mustard seeds on it. You can glue a magnet strip on the back to put on your refrigerator! YouTube Mustard Seed: youtube.com/watch?v=wnnxf-dg6sm Yeast in the Dough Activity: Find a recipe to make some bread or rolls using yeast (check out the website below for ideas). Show your family how a small amount of yeast puffs up into a large amount of dough! One small thing like yeast or a mustard seed can affect everything around it in a large way. Discuss how each person s actions, even small ones, can make a difference! kidsactivitiesblog.com/46496/making-bread-with-kids Concluding Prayer: God of judgment and mercy, thank You for Your love, which continually calls me to come closer to You. Help me to see You in all people I meet and to recognize how to serve You by helping others, especially those in need. Amen Make story cards to keep in your car. Write one word per card: patience, kindness, humility, forgiveness, honesty, perseverance, loyalty, courage, mercy, justice, etc. Let your kids choose a card, and then make up a story for your children to learn about that virtue. Summer Fun and Faith! Learn more about the Bible and grow in faith, as you enjoy these summer days! Write Psalm 119:11 on a large sheet of paper. Cut it into puzzle pieces, and hide the pieces around your home. Let the kids find and put the puzzle pieces together. Memorize this Scripture as a family during the week. Give your child five pebbles to put in his pocket. Ask him to be kind to others today. Every time he does a random act of kindness, he can move one pebble into a different pocket. At the end of the day, discuss what he did to bless others. (Galatians 6:10) Make a small photo book of immediate family members and grandparents. Look through the book with your kids, and ask them to share something nice that each family member has done for them. Pray together for each person. (Ephesians 6:18) Open an umbrella and ask your kids, When do we use umbrellas? Then read Psalm 91:1 to discover what kind of protection God gives to His children. Ask: Who will you run to in the storms of life? 6 FAITH IN ACTION MINISTRIES Valley Interfaith Project Casa Core Team Throughout May & June, VIP team members visited with fellow community members to discuss the importance of voting in the August 26 Arizona Primary. Particular focus was on helping registered Independents understand their right to vote in primary elections. This effort addresses the Church s call to Faithful Citizenship. Politics, according to the Social Doctrine of the Church, is one of the highest forms of charity, because it serves the common good. I cannot wash my hands, eh? - Pope Francis Community members learned: as an open primary state, Arizona registered Independents are eligible to participate in a party primary without registering to a party. their Arizona legislative district and who their candidates are. to interpret the ballot choice cards sent from the County Registrar. to get a ballot sent to a temporary address, if travelling for the summer. several elections in this state are decided in the primary, making some races in the general election a formality, and only 9% of Independents voted in the 2012 Arizona Primary. 179 people participated in our informal poker-chip poll of which Arizona legislative districts they live in and whether they are registered Independent or to a Political Party (we did not ask which party). The interesting results are as follows: 44% of participants are Independent; 56% are registered to a Political Party. This exceeds Arizona s overall registration of 40% Independents. We need about 220 people to accomplish this. Call ext. 155 or bonnie@thecasa.org to reserve your spot in the photo. We will begin at 12:30 pm. It is suggested to wear shades of blue to enhance the photo. Stay for Brunch We will gather for the Peace Awards Brunch immediately following the aerial photo. This year we are honoring Fr. Eddie Fronske, OFM and Ruth Zemek for their dedicated work to bring peace to the world. Please celebrate with us, as we present them with the Casa Peace Award. Seating is limited; make your reservation today: TheCasa.org or ext. 132 Finding the JustFAITH program at the Casa, is one of those serendipities that you just know only happens by grace. Rich says this has been one of the most meaningful experiences in his life. Neither my husband nor myself had any idea of the depth and breadth of the topics that were explored. Under the leadership of our facilitators we not only learned about some of the many social justice missions of the church, but we also had the opportunity to meet individuals providing and receiving the services of these missions. Through hearing personal stories and reading about the lives of individuals and groups all over the world, we had a sometimes overwhelming view of the suffering, needs, and successes of those struggling all over this beautiful earth. Most importantly, we experienced the connection to Spirit and all living beings. Finally, our hearts are full because of our connection to the wonderful Casa community, especially with our fellow sojourners on this year long journey. The ongoing discussion of significant issues was invaluable both personally and for comprehending our times. Our lives have been changed forever by this process (which, though intense, ended too soon) and also by the knowledge that there is guidance, support, and companionship in serving. 10 Vision Corner Living faith through loving acts Laura Libertore s faith is steeped in the Marianist charism, and her involvement with a Marianist Lay Community in Dayton, Ohio led her to appreciate the treasures of Catholicism. As the Casa s new Program Coordinator for Faith in Action Ministry Development, she is excited to discover the connections with Franciscan views. The Marianist charism fosters hospitality, community and working for justice, which is what I see that people really value here, she says. One of her passions is finding ways to integrate Catholic Social Teaching into everyday life. For the many ministries that are borne from the Casa s JustFAITH program, Laura will help support their success. I m inspired by Micah 6:8 and believe that we live our faith through how we love: by all of our acts of charity, advocacy and works of solidarity, she says. Moving across the country to Arizona was not an easy decision for Laura to make. My faith led me to be open to where the Since 1951, the Casa has been renewing lives through spiritual growth, healing and transformation, and serving others. Holy Spirit was guiding me, she says. Then I discerned how to respond to and follow that guidance. It s all the Spirit moving, she says.
