2 TWO POPES DECLARED SAINTS APRIL 27, 2014 Pope Saint John XXIII Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was born on November 25, 1881, in Sotto il Monte, Italy. He was ordained a priest in 1904, a bishop in 1925, and elevated to the College of Cardinals in He was elected to the Chair of Peter as Pope John XXIII in The Good Pope was perhaps the most influential pope of the twentieth century. He surprised the Church and the world with his reforming spirit, manifested most poignantly when he convened the Second Vatican Council in 1962, which laid out a broad new vision and set of reforms for the Roman Catholic Church. While pope, Saint John XXIII internationalized the college of cardinals, revised the code of canon law, and wrote eight papal encyclicals, including Mater et Magistra (Mother and Teacher), which expounded on themes of Christianity and social progress. He died on June 3, He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 3, 2000 and canonized by Pope Francis on Arpil 27, Pope Saint John Paul II Karol Jozef Wojtyla was born on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland. Much of his advanced education was obtained underground after the Nazi invasion of Poland, and in 1942 he entered the clandestine seminary in Krakow. He was ordained a priest in 1946, a bishop in 1958, was appointed archbishop of Krakow in 1964, and elevated to the College of Cardinals in He was elected to the Chair of Peter as Pope John Paul II in His lifelong devotion to the Most Holy Madonna was expressed in his papal motto, Totus tuus ( Totally yours ), dedicating himself, his papacy, and the world to Mary. A groundbreaker in many ways, he was the first Polish pope and the first non-italian pontiff in 400 years. He left the Church more than a dozen encyclicals and scores of other documents, and beatified and canonized more than a thousand men and women from all walks of life. He died on April 2, He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on May 1, 2011 and canonized by Pope Francis on April 27, Source: JS Paluch Co., Inc.

5 FAITH IN ACTION MINISTRY Casa Builders Needs YOUR Help to Get the Next Habitat for Humanity House Built As a fundraiser for our third Habitat home, The Casa Builders Ministry will be building a Lego house. Yes! That s right, a 20 x 20 house made from Lego pieces. For five weekends, from April 26 to May 25, you will see us at a table after each Mass, and we will be building a Lego house. People can buy Lego bricks and place them in the appropriate places in our Lego house. For a slightly higher cost, people can also buy other pieces, such as doors, windows, roof tiles, etc. As the house gets closer to completion you can sponsor the building of the beds, kitchen tables, and even the toilet. The costs for these special items will be designated at the table. You can also learn how to get involved in this new ministry. Stop by each week to see how the house is progressing. Mother s Day is May 11, 2014! Honor Your Mother and Honor All Mothers with a unique card from Maggie s Place Maggie s Place will be present after all Masses at the FRC on the weekend of May 3 & 4 offering their annual Mother s Day card for a suggested donation of $5. Please stop by their table after Mass! Maggie s Place is a community that provides houses of hospitality for pregnant and parenting women who are alone or on the streets. Since its opening in 2000, Maggie s Place has welcomed over 600 pregnant women in vulnerable situations into safe and supportive homes. Visit to learn more about Maggie s Place or to order your card online. Care for All of God s Creation On March 29, the Arizona Ecumenical Council Earth Care Commission (AEC ECC) hosted a tour of the Great Bend of the Gila River, just one hour west of Phoenix. The ECC is committed to providing opportunities for people to get out into the wilderness to connect with the land and better understand these beautiful gifts we have in Arizona and the importance of preserving them. The group was accompanied by a guide from Archaeology Southwest who educated them on the geology and cultural artifacts of this unique area. Five members of the Franciscan Renewal Center community participated and were treated to a rock scramble to view ancient petroglyphs, as well as a hike to see remnants of a prehistoric village, its fortress walls and ball courts. On April 7, many from the Care for Creation team at the FRC also went to greet the Great Climate Marchers as they marched through Phoenix. This group is walking across the country to raise awareness of the need for action now to reduce carbon emissions that add to global warming. If you d like to join the Care For Creation team, please contact Patti. Contact us at Patti Sills-Trausch at x130 or socialconcerns@thecasa.org Bonnie Wasniewski at x155 or bonnie@thecasa.org

8 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION April 27 Family Faith Activities Second Sunday of Easter Season Jesus greets His disciples with the gift of peace and the gift of the Holy Spirit. In doing so, Jesus commissions his disciples to continue the work that He has begun. The story of Thomas illustrates our Christian experience today: We are called to believe without seeing. In fact, all Christians after the first witnesses have been called to believe without seeing. Our faith is based on the witness of the Church that has preceded us, beginning with Thomas and the first disciples. Through Baptism, we receive the same Holy Spirit that Jesus brought to the first disciples. We are among those who are blessed, because we believe without having seen. Ask your family, How do we recognize Jesus in others? How do others recognize Jesus in you? Read John 20:19 31 or watch the video at and discuss: Why are the disciples behind locked doors? How does Thomas come to believe? How does God s love help to bring peace into the world? What helps you believe in God without seeing? Feeling is Believing Activity: Fill a bag with items that have different shapes and textures. Pass the bag around to everyone and let each person feel one object and guess what it is without looking. Talk about how this is similar to our faith we cannot see or touch Jesus, but we can feel Him in our hearts. Disappearing Act Activity: Take a piece of paper and an orange or pink marker or highlighter. Have each person draw a picture of Jesus. Now place a piece of red cellophane over the drawing. Jesus disappears. Share how it looks like Jesus disappeared, but He didn t really. Just because you cannot see Him, doesn t mean He is not there. Concluding Prayer: Let us pray. God of Love, we believe and we trust in you. Help us to walk in the light of faith. In the name of your son, the Risen Lord, we pray. Amen. Confirmation & Eucharist News! This Friday May 2 is our celebration with 48 students and 6 adults receiving these sacraments of full initiation. Take a moment after Mass today and stop by the hospitality area to sign a card with your best wishes and prayers! These will be distributed to the students with their certificates after the liturgy. Many thanks to all of you who have kept these families in your prayers during this time of preparation. Watch for pictures in upcoming bulletin issues and on the bulletin board in the lobby. 13 Thank you to everyone who stopped in to donate blood on Sunday, April 6. United Blood Services collected 21 pints. You are all heroes! The next blood drive hosted by the Casa is scheduled for Sunday, September 21 The OLA staff invites you to participate in the Yellow Candle Project The Yellow Candle was created in 1981 by Federation of Jewish Men s clubs to keep alive the memory of the 6 million Jewish people and 5 million others, who perished in the Shoah/Holocaust. The Candle is modeled after a traditional Jewish memorial Yahrzeit candle that burns for 24 hours during periods of mourning. The candle's yellow wax serves to remind us of the yellow arm band which Jews were forced to wear during the Nazi regime. Pick up a candle on the weekend of April 26 and 27 after all masses. Place the Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle in your window on the evening of April 27, 2014 and recite the prayer that comes with the candle. THOSE WHO DO NOT REMEMBER THE PAST ARE CONDEMNED TO RELIVE IT.
