Mack, CPA Treasurer William Anger, Esq., Vice Chair Arlene Davidson, Secretary Phone Fax Website thecasa.org You are called to even more. This week s readings all remind us that God s law is one of love and we are challenged to execute it to the best of our ability. The commandments were not only written on stone but on our hearts as well. Following those commandments means we are loving more, serving more, and living with more humility. Jesus himself said he came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it. Love is the fulfillment of that law. However simple that may sound, it can be quite challenging. Take the example from Jesus. He offers the commandment, you shall not kill. Excellent! I succeeded in that one today. But then he presses further, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment. Ouch, I do that one all the time. The point is not that we are doomed to fail but that we are called to more. And God never calls us without giving us what we need. As we go forward with building this new church, let us remind ourselves of the lesson Francis had to learn regarding churches. When God called him to Go and rebuild my church, God was talking about the people much more than the building. We too are called to build and re-build ourselves into an everstronger community. One which fosters intimacy and connectedness even as we welcome greater diversity. The old Casa is our foundation. The new Casa is before us. Now it is up to all of us to work together to become the people we want to be. So, get to know your neighbor. Not the one who you ve known for years, but the one whose name you forget. Ask them again. Find out about their kids, their work, their hobbies, their dreams. Start loving now. We have work to do. May God give you peace. 3 LITURGY CONNECTION The Diocese of Phoenix s Charity and Development Appeal is This Weekend Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. Pope Francis This weekend is the annual Charity and Development Appeal. The CDA supports community and charitable organizations that assist individuals and families in need or in crisis. These organizations improve the lives of thousands of people across four Arizona counties (Mohave, Maricopa, Coconino and Yavapai). The CDA serves the needs of local communities beyond the boundaries of any one parish. As a result, more people are helped. Through the CDA, faith is nurtured and developed from birth through adulthood. Opportunities to live and grow our Catholic faith are available through our schools, parishes, religious education programs, Kino Institute as well as other opportunities offered throughout the Diocese. The CDA also supports the education and formation of seminarians, priests and deacons. More information can be found at dphx.org/cda. The Year of Building Our church and our community A team of writers from our community are creating prayers to be shared throughout our community for the next 12 months. The purpose of these prayers is to help us build our relationships in community, and create opportunities for sharing our faith in this unique time of building our new church. We recognize that not only are we constructing a building, we also have the unique circumstance to build ourselves into a stronger community of faith, using the construction of the new church as the metaphor. February 2017 ~ The Narthex The narthex is a place of welcome, a threshold space between the sacred space and the outside world. It serves as a gathering space as well as the entrance and exit to the building. This gathering space helps believers to make the transition from everyday life to the celebration of the liturgy. Scripture: Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. Prayer Whispering God, it is your breath that gives life to our senses. We walk into this portico, the empty space, our vestibule of preparation. As we step into your presence, may our eyes adjust from the glare of the sun and the darkness of the night so we can clearly see your Presence. May our ears become deaf to the noise of the world and hear only your loving call. Inside, may our jubilant voices join with those of all people gathered to sing your praise and proclaim your glory. We move our body through this Narthex: this space between the outside world and the mystery of the sacred presence inside our Church. We enter, confident of your presence. We enter to worship, to pray, to celebrate at the table of thanksgiving to which all are invited through your Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen. 4 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION FIRST COMMUNION! CONFIRMATION! Brady, Shauna, Sophia, Benjamin, Declan, John, Tallulah, Bianca, and Mickey. These are just nine of the names of our 30 First Communion/ Confirmation students. Stop by the Hospitality Area today to pick up a magnet with a prayer partner name on it. Who will you pray for this year? Family Faith Activities Feb. 12th 6th Sunday of Ordinary Time Matthew s Gospel this week highlights what seems to be an unattainable ideal. What Jesus asks of His followers requires an extraordinary interior conversion of heart. Mere external compliance seems impossible; only love as the basis for action could render possible the ethic proposed here by Jesus. Jesus teaching how he deliberately pushes his hearers beyond mere observance of the Law to a way of following the commandments that springs from a radical love of God and neighbor is our focus. Talking with our children about how to treat others, how to acknowledge mistakes and own up to them, how to reach out to those in need can never begin too early (RCL Benziger). Gather your family and brainstorm the rules that you follow at home. Read Matthew 5: and discuss: What does Jesus say about those who follow His commandments? What are we supposed to do if we are angry at someone? Forgiving Booklet: Cut out various colored heart shapes of the same size. Staple or tie together to make a LOVE AND FORGIVING booklet. Each page can have pictures or words that represent ideas about forgiving someone or things they may wish to be forgiven for. Use stickers! Draw! Cut from old magazines! When complete, read and discuss each person s book. Concluding Prayer: Loving God, when we do wrong and hurt others, give us the courage to admit our mistakes and ask for forgiveness from those we have hurt. Help us to forgive others so that we may all live in peace together. Amen. Apache Fair Trade Cooperative Ministry (AFTCO) Volunteers at the Franciscan Renewal Center have been working with crafters on the San Carlos and White Mountain Apache Reservations since This ministry helps provide additional income for the Apache crafters by setting up sales at the Casa. The volunteers in this ministry also seek to share the history of the Apache and the importance of crafting to their lives and spirituality. Shelby Jasmer attended an immersion trip two years ago on the San Carlos Reservation where she met the crafters and learned firsthand about their culture and crafts. That experience moved Shelby to get involved as a volunteer with the AFTCO ministry. On February 25th, the Franciscan Renewal Center will again be taking a trip to the San Carlos Apache Reservation. 6 FAITH IN ACTION MINISTRIES For I was a stranger, and you welcomed me Mathew 25: 35 Recently, the media has focused on the new Administration's temporary ban on refugees and immigrants to the U.S. Many people don t know how refugees come to the U.S., nor the extensive vetting process that refugees undergo before arriving on U.S. soil. The United Nations has agreements with host countries to take in a certain amount of refugees in a given year. Our program is run by the State Department which then contracts with nonprofit organizations to settle those refugees. The current screening process for all refugees involves many layers of security checks (20 steps) before entry into the country, and Syrians are subject to an additional layer of checks. According to the Pew Research Center, the refugee admissions process can take up to 18 to 24 months. It includes a review of applications by the State Department and other federal agencies, in-person interviews, health screenings and, for many, cultural orientations. See link above to the State Department website. For the Catholic Church, Catholic Charities (CC) is the organization that welcomes refugees and immigrants to our country. Member agencies help them get settled into new homes and communities with the help of local churches. CC provides job and resource support, especially to help overcome barriers that impede their adjustment to life in the United States. The U.S. Catholic Bishops, Pope Francis and all the Franciscan Provinces issued statements in the past weeks opposing this ban on refugees.
