4 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Family Faith Activities June 29 ST. PETER & ST. PAUL, APOSTLES In today's Gospel, Jesus refers to Peter as Rock and says that the Church will be built upon him. The Gospel reminds us that the Church is built on the foundation of faith in Jesus Christ. It is faith that makes Peter the Rock upon which the Church is built. The family, as the domestic church, has this same faith as its foundation. We refer to someone as a rock when they are very reliable. Talk as a family about who has been and is a rock in your extended family. Read Matthew 16:13 19 and discuss: What did Jesus ask the disciples? How did they answer? How did Peter answer? How would you answer if Jesus asked you? Faith as Foundation Activity: Find a palm-sized rock for each member of the family. Using acrylic paint, have each person decorate their rock and write faith and their name on it. Explain that the rock represents our faith. Remind them to build their strength stronger each day with prayer especially when they see their rock as a reminder. Concluding Prayer: Grant we pray O Lord our God, that we may be sustained by the intercession of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, that, as through them you gave your Church the foundations of her heavenly office, so through them you may help her to eternal salivation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen. Who is St. Peter? Peter was a simple fisherman from Galilee that was generous, honest and loved Jesus very much. His real name was Simon but Jesus changed it to Peter which means rock. Jesus said he would build his church upon this rock and so Peter became the first pope. Peter was not perfect. When the Roman soldiers arrested Jesus, Peter was afraid they would kill him and so he denied that he knew Jesus three times! But Peter repented before Jesus died and was forgiven. After the resurrection Jesus asked Peter three times Do you love me? Peter said yes and so was told to feed Jesus sheep, the church. Peter went to live in Rome and converted many non believers. When the Christians began to be persecuted Peter left the city to be safe. But on the way out he met the Lord who said that he was going back into Rome to be crucified a second time! Jesus would be taking Peter s place! Peter did not want this to happen so he turned around and went back to Rome. He was taken prisoner and crucified upside down on Vatican Hill. St. Peter is the patron of bakers, ship makers, watch makers and people suffering from foot problems. Who is St. Paul? St. Paul, first known as Saul, hated and persecuted Christians, even torturing them! Then on the road to Damascus. he was knocked off his horse and experienced a change of heart. He was then known as Paul and spent his life trying to copy Jesus as much as possible. Paul took the gospel message to the gentiles, traveling to Greece, Turkey and Syria. As a missionary he was whipped, stoned, shipwrecked, and lost at sea. Yet he always trusted in God and kept going. Paul wrote much of the New Testament. The Bible doesn t tell us how St. Paul died, but we believe he was beheaded by Emperor Nero. He is the patron of authors, musicians, missionaries and people suffering from snakebites or hailstorms. 6 FAITH IN ACTION MINISTRIES We are pleased to announce the hire of Laura Libertore, as Program Coordinator, Faith in Action Ministry Development. Laura will focus on expanding the JustFaith program, and deepening our understanding of Catholic social teaching. Laura will also support both existing and new ministry teams with the structure needed to turn great ideas into actionable workable plans. She brings 25 years of experience to the Casa at just the right time, as so many inspired community members and those outside the community want to put their faith into action for positive change in our world. She is dedicated to social justice and has coordinated new ministry projects, developed and facilitated adult education programs and directed the Marianist Volunteer Service Communities. Faith In Action Backpack Collection July 19 & 20 The State of Arizona s Child Protective Service has been in the news for months. Happily, the legislature has provided some new money and new organization to better ensure the protection of the over 14,000 children in foster care. In addition, the state works in partnership with many social service agencies that recruit and train people to be foster care parents. Catholic Charities is one of those agencies that finds and supports foster care families. Catholic Charities supports about 100 families that provide homes to more than 200 of those children. Your donations of backpacks & school supplies directly impacts those children & families getting the school year off on the RIGHT foot! Bring the backpacks/school supplies on July 19 or 20. Backpacks that can fit children up to high school are needed as well as all types of notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, crayons, glue, etc. See the lists of age appropriate school supplies provided at many stores. Please put the school supplies in a separate bag apart from the backpack. To help with the collection, contact Francesca Thomas at casathomas@cox.net Give Yourself a Gift Next Fall Consider joining a JustFaith or EngagingSpiritualty group JustFaith Programs transform people and expand their commitment to social ministry. Through these lifechanging opportunities, members of a church can study, explore and experience Christ s call to care for the poor and vulnerable in a lively, challenging, multifaceted process in the context of a small faith community. JustFaith is a 29- session small-group experience that connects people with the gospel and wounded and vulnerable in our world. EngagingSpirituality is a 21-session small-group spiritual journey that explores the connection between prayerful presence and social action. Both will be offered at the FRC this fall. Information and discernment sessions will take place in August. Look for dates and times in upcoming bulletins and learn more at justfaith.org. Contact Patti or Laura for more information.. 7 FAITH IN ACTION PROGRAMS MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Friday, September 12 Movie Night at the Casa A PLACE AT THE TABLE Fifty million people in the U.S. one in four children don t know where their Directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine the issue of hunger in America through the lens of three people struggling with food insecurity. Barbie, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids; Rosie, a Colorado fifth grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school; and Tremonica, a Mississippi second grader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford. If another nation was doing this to our children, we d be at war. - Jeff Bridges, Founder of the End Hunger Network Ultimately, A PLACE AT THE TABLE shows us how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation, and that could be solved once and for all, if the American public decides as they have in the past-that making healthy food available and affordable is in the best interest of us all. Be the change you want to see in the world! To register for these Faith in Action Programs, call or visit thecasa.org thecasa.org RENEWAL Page 7

10 Vision Corner A gift of renewal, a reason to return Easter Sunday I found myself attending Easter Mass solo but soon felt among friends. As everyone settled into their seats, a loud booming voice filled the courtyard with a litany of invitations. If you are divorced, you are welcome here.if you are facing addictions, you are welcome here. I looked around as people silenced to listen to the woman s soliloquy. While many of the definitions did not apply to me, I could identify a friend for every experience listed. This was the introduction to the song All are Welcome. From that moment on, I describe the Casa as a place that not only preaches all are welcome but also practices it Want to know more about the RENEWING LIVES Campaign? Discover what is underway to make the Casa s 25 acres even more inviting. Visit us at CasaRenewingLives.org and see the latest renderings, learn about upcoming events, and meet the people behind this project. This effort has involved more than 400 community members just during the planning stage alone. We welcome all to share the journey with us. Together we will build something that inspires ourselves and our world to embrace the Franciscan way. 6,938 participants in Adult Education and Retreats during fiscal year in every action, ministry and homily. Since that first experience, I have involved myself in several workshops and ministries, all of which have been fulfilling and rewarding. There truly is a place for everyone at the Casa and an opportunity to build on one s faith, spirituality, calling and worship. Each visit to the Casa Since 1951, the Casa has been renewing lives through spiritual growth, healing and transformation, and serving others. leaves me with a gift of renewal and a reason to return.
