8 FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Family Faith Activities Palm Sunday begins the most sacred week of the Church year Holy Week. During these days we prepare for Easter by prayerful reflection upon the events of Jesus Passion and death. You may want to display a crucifix as a focal point for family prayer this week. Before doing the reading explain that people would lay down palms as a sign of honor. Discuss how your family can honor Jesus in the coming week. Read Matthew 121:1-11 and discuss: Who untied the donkey and the colt? What did the people spread on the road? What did the people shout? Coat Give-Away Activity: People threw coats down in front of Jesus as he came into Jerusalem. Go through your clothes and donate any coats you don't need to someone who does. Watch and Pray Activity: Make crosses from palm branches and put in a prominent place in your home. Use them as reminders to stop and pray. Go to for instructions on how to make them. Palm Leaf Cookies Activity: Make cookies that include a Palm Sunday lesson. Go to childrensfbc.blogspot.com/2013/03/palmsunday-devotion.html for the directions! Concluding prayer: On this day of great rejoicing, Lord Jesus Christ, when we welcome You as our King and Savior, we also walk in the shadow of Your cross. Hosanna! we cry. Blessed are You who come in God s name to save us. Hosanna! Strengthen our faith on this Palm Sunday so that when the time comes to carry the cross we might still call out to You with heartfelt praise. Give us the grace and the courage to follow You this Holy Week from death to resurrection, from darkness to the fullness of light. We need You, Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior. Hosanna! Amen! Holy Week Happenings! Did you know that Lent officially ends on Holy Thursday when the Mass of the Lord s Supper begins? As the Mass begins, we enter the Triduum which concludes at the beginning of the Easter Vigil on Saturday night. A triduum is a three day period of prayer and recalls the three days Christ spent in the tomb. Here are some ways to keep these days holy with your family: Holy Thursday: Bake bread together, and talk about the Eucharist. Join us for the Mass of the Lord s Supper at 7:00 pm. Good Friday: On Good Friday, read the story of the Passion from a children s Bible. Talk about how much Jesus must have loved us to suffer for us. Make crosses out of popsicle sticks or from sticks found outside. Join us for the Stations of the Cross at 12 noon and for the Celebration of the Lord s Passion at 7:00 pm. Holy Saturday: On Holy Saturday, color eggs together. Talk about how the egg is like Jesus tomb because it is like a rock. It also gives us life and sustenance because it is food. Use a crayon to draw religious symbols on the eggs before they are dyed, or put religious stickers on them after the dye has dried. Celebrate the Easter Vigil at 7:30 pm for the Liturgy of Light, Word, Baptism and Eucharist. Some of your classmates from Family Catechesis will be baptized that night! Come and celebrate with them!
