2 Our Lady of the Angels Church Celebrating our little angels at Our Lady of the Angels To the parents of our young children - Jesus said, Let the children come to me. - Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don t feel you have to suppress it in God s house. - Sit toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what s going on at the altar. (They tire of seeing the backs of others heads.) - Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions of the ministers. - Sing the songs & pray the responses. (Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you.) - If you have to step out during Mass with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back in. By your example, you will teach them that it is courteous and respectful to stay until the end. - All are welcome here. Remember that the way we welcome children in the church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this house of worship. To the members of our community - The presence of children is a gift to the Church and they are a reminder that our community is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents.

5 Faith in Action Ministry 2013 Year in Review JUST SCRIPTURE meets again on January 12 th at 9 am in Ventura in Piper Hall. Join us It is a : New Year (2014), New Format (Historical/Interpretative Opening Presentation), New Members (YOU, we hope). We took a survey, noted your suggestions and revised the format of Just Scripture. Each month we will open the session with a person who has studied Scripture. In January, we will be opening the session with a presentation by a mystery guest. This person will guide us through the readings and help us understand the context and times when they were written so everyone will have a level of comfort with the readings. We will then focus our discussion on teasing out what scripture says to your heart, mind and soul. We will reflect on how scripture calls us to live in a way that promotes issues of justice, peace and inclusion. In this way Scripture will live in our community and in our lives. If you haven t joined us in the past, please join us now. If you have come before, come again and see the changes we ve made that make the session more open, more reflective and more directed to those who love Scripture but are not scholars that s YOU. Café Justo Fair Trade coffee will be sold next weekend after all the masses. In 2013, Casa Grounds for Solidarity sold almost $15,500 of coffee. That is new record! 8 Family Faith Activities Jan. 5th, Epiphany of the Lord Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Epiphany. On Epiphany we recognize that Jesus, the light of the world, was made visible to the magi who searched for him. On today s feast we celebrate that God s saving love is offered to all people. Ask each member of your family to name one of the greatest gi s that Jesus has given them. Read Ma hew 2:1-12 and discuss: How do the wise men find their way to Jesus? What do the magi do when they find Jesus? What gi s do the wise men bring to Jesus? Ac vity: Mosaic Star: Cut out a large star from construc on or cardstock paper for each member of your family. Now find materials around your house to decorate the star making it into a mosaic. Use ssue paper, cut out pictures from magazines, ribbons, gli er, be crea ve! Then hang the stars around your home as a reminder to look for Jesus presence in our lives each day. Ac vity: Walking in a Winter Wonderland: Take a winter night walk on a clear evening. Find the North Star or any constella ons that you recognize. Remind your family that the Wiese Men followed the brightest star in the sky in order to find the baby Jesus. Help them find the brightest star in the night sky. Enjoy this facet of God s crea on. Concluding Prayer: Let us pray. God of Light, may we shine with love like the star of Bethlehem. Thank you for the best gi of all, the gi of your Son, Jesus. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. Confirma on and First Eucharist Family Session Sunday Jan. 12th 10:45 am Guadalupe Room Infant Bap sm Informa on Session Wednesday Jan. 8th 6:30 pm This is the first step in scheduling a bap sm. Call Pa y at ext. 154 for more informa on We 3 Kings of Orient Are! Who are the Magi? We know li le about the Magi. They come from the East and journey to Bethlehem, flowing an astrological sign a star, so we think that they were astrologers. Because of the 3 gi s men oned in the Gospel we assume that there were 3 Magi. The Gospel does not tell us how many may have come to pay homage to Jesus. The Magi represent the gen les search for a savior, therefore represen ng the en re world, including us! The gi s are a foreshadowing of Jesus role in salva- on. Gold is representa ve of Jesus kingship. Frankincense is a symbol of his divinity because priests used it in the Temple. Myrrh, was used to prepare the dead for burial, is offered in an cipa on of Jesus death. The word Epiphany means manifesta on. Historically several moments in Christ's early life and ministry are celebrated as epiphanies. These include his birth, the visit of the Magi, his bap sm by John and his first miracle at Cana.
