The agricultural metaphors in all of today s readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God s word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. 4 SSD PREP MEETING FOR TEENS/CORE Teen and adult participants, don t forget our SSD Prep Meetings on Wednesday, July 19 and July 26 in the church at 630 pm. We will form small groups, and have our annual preparation Mass and distribute our event t-shirts. PRAYERS FOR SSD PARTICIPANTS On July 28, following daily Mass, Fr. Pat and the rest of our SSD participants will be departing for San Diego. Please keep all participants adults and teens in your prayers over the weekend. May God bless our trip and may the Holy Spirit open our hearts to receive all that God wants us to receive! TODAY S GOSPEL You know that moment when you hear the beginning of the Gospel, recognize it, and then check out? This is one of those Gospels. Just like Lazarus, the Prodigal Son, Zaccheus, and others, we hear these readings all the time and act like there s nothing new for us. But the Living Word has something for us at each encounter; we re never done receiving nourishment from it. Besides, Jesus says Whoever has ears ought to hear. What type of seeds have you been in your life? The one on the path, who hears God and the Church, but can t understand? Have you been the one on rocky ground, who has a God high but quickly goes back to old ways? Or how about the one among thorns, who will do anything for acceptance or praise? The Lord wants to plant us in good soil. He longs for us to shoot up in a Springtime of His grace, to share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We find freedom from the rocks and thorns. Saint Paul says to the Romans, Creation waits with expectation. We should too for all the good things the Lord wishes to do through us and for us. How much of the ground of peoples hearts is not fit for planting? Jesus says, Gross is the heart of this people, and He s sending us on a mission to inspire and encourage us to achieve the end for which (He) sent (us) (Isaiah 55:11). It seems like it s too much. But new plants are often tied to wooden posts, so they don t topple over. That s why we re tied to the Cross; supported by Christ in everything. We don t have to go it alone. Go bear fruit!
