3 MISSION APPEAL FOR THE DIOCESE OF SALEM, INDIA JULY 28 & JULY 29 Fr. Bernard Viagappan will be here next weekend at all of our Masses. We will take a second collection for his Mission, the Diocese of Salem, India. Salem Diocese is a Latin Right Catholic Diocese in India with a total population of 5,360,460. Out of that, 100,050 are Catholics. There are 60 parishes which provide Faith Formation, foster unity, oneness and a sense of belongingness. 62% of the Catholics in the Diocese of Salem are from lower caste groups, historically deprived, economically downtrodden. In the past, they were called untouchables. This is our target group for Evangelization and Empowerment. Education is the top priority. There are 32 Elementary Schools, 10 Middle Schools, 4 Higher Secondary Schools (up to 12th grade), and 1 Technical School. All together, 89, 923 poor children benefit from school education. There are 3 big Homes for Children hailing from below poverty line families and some of them are orphans. Nearly 500 children in these 3 Homes are subsidized by the Diocese with total cost of $95,000 USD per year, which is a struggle to meet the expenses. Socio political empowerment of Rural Dalit (Oppressed) Women is another important ministry. The goal to create a Just society wherein unorganized poor women and children achieve self-reliance through empowerment and sustainable development. This goal is being achieved through providing training of the Right to the Information Act, Health Education through medical camps and preventative education, and Low Cost Housing for Widows and Refugees. Every year, 30 houses are built in different parishes of the diocese which costs around $4,000 for each house. The Diocese of Salem is not self-sufficient to fund these projects, so your financial help through next week s second collection to support this Mission is appreciated. We are expected to fully participate in the liturgy. If we miss that much of Mass, we are not fully participating. The Concluding Rite is the fourth part of the Mass, and although the shortest of the four parts, it is an important part of the liturgy. The name Mass comes from the Latin Ite Missa est- Go, you are sent forth or Go, the Mass has ended and it is the name given to the celebration of the Eucharist. We go to Mass to be dismissed. At the end of Mass, we are sent forth in peace to love and serve the Lord, in deeper communion, we hope, with each other and the whole Church. We receive the body of Christ so that we go forth as the Body of Christ into the world, the living sacrament of his presence in the midst of others because through the Eucharist we become more profoundly the Church. Mass is the Easter Triduum in one and when we receive communion, we receive Jesus himself, making this the most sacred thing we do. It is right to allow ourselves the time to prepare to receive Christ and it is also right that we spend a few moments thanking Him for this gift and the proper place to give thanks is not in the parking lot. It is in the Church, until the Mass has ended, and after celebrant has walked out.

Bereaved families sometimes ask for assistance when a funeral reception is held in Logan Hall and our list of volunteers has dwindled. Please consider helping with this very important ministry. You may only be asked to help two or three times per year if there are enough volunteers. Pope Pius formed the Holy League of Nations and commanded people to pray the Rosary for victory during the 1571 Battle of Lepanto. In that battle where the banner of Our Lady of Guadalupe was raised, the greatly outnumbered Holy League was victorious against the Muslim invasion of Europe. That victory led Pope Pius V to establish October 7 as the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, later renamed the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
