To learn more, visit PLEASE PRAY FOR THE RECENTLY DECEASED: Lucille Buratovich PARISH OUTREACH UPDATE OPERATION SCHOOL BELL No one likes to wear their poverty, but for many children in our area their parents can t afford even the most basic items of school apparel. Operation School Bell, a program administered by Assistance League of Fresno, provides over 3,800 Fresno County school children new school clothes, allowing them to arrive in the classroom better prepared to learn and enhancing their chance to succeed. Education is the best defense against the problems of poverty, illiteracy, drug abuse and crime. Operation School Bell helps children get to and remain in the classroom with a foundation for learning. On behalf of all Holy Spirit parishioners, your Parish Outreach Committee provides annual support for this worthy cause. LOGAN HALL STATIONS OF THE CROSS The Stations of the Cross devotion consists of 14 stations that commemorates Jesus Christ s Passion. The stations are commonly used as a mini-pilgrimage that begun with Our Lady herself. After Jesus burial, she retraced His steps to Calvary, pausing at each place along the way where His suffering was particularly acute. After Jesus Ascension into Heaven, Mary continued this practice of making the way of the cross, being joined in this devotion by other disciples and followers of Jesus. In the 16th century, when it was no longer possible to travel to Jerusalem, replica shrines of The Way of the Cross, became popular throughout Europe for the many who wanted to retrace the final journey of Jesus to Calvary. 4 FAITH FORMATION RCIA RITE OF SENDING AND ELECTION The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process through which adults and older children become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. This includes those who have never been baptized, those who have been baptized in another Christian faith, and adults who were baptized Catholics but did not receive formal instruction in the faith or the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. The full RCIA process consists of four stages marked by the celebrations of three major rites with the parish community. They are Pre-Catechumenate (Inquiry), Catechumenate, Purification and Enlightenment, and Mystagogia. Currently, the catechumens (un-baptized) and candidates (baptized) are entering the third stage where they celebrated the Rite of Sending and the Rite of Election this Tuesday. The Rite of Sending offers the parish community the opportunity to show approval of the catechumens and to send them forth to the Rite of Election marking the beginning of the final preparation for the sacraments of initiation. The Rite of Election is a celebration of God s call of the elect, as well as the person s acceptance of God s call. The bishop is present at the celebration which marks the beginning of the Purification and Enlightenment Period for catechumens, now called the elect. ECHOES OF FAITH CERTIFICATION FOR THE FOUNDATIONS OF CATECHESIS CATECHETICAL CERTIFICATION Echoes of Faith is a formation program offered to anyone currently serving as a Catechist or assistant along with those interested in joining our Religious Education program and volunteering in the future. Each of the 11 courses has a series of video segments & discussion questions, answered in a collaborative-style setting. These courses will be offered at Holy Spirit Catholic Church for the first time beginning Thursday, March 1st from 5:30PM-8:30PM. Getting Started will be the module which covers how to create the physical environment and shape a social environment for catechesis, using creative activities in learning, developing successful session plans, good management and discipline techniques, and learning to pray together. A complete schedule is available on our website or in the Religious Education Office. There is no cost to attend and the modules can be done in any order because they are independent of one another. VOLUNTEERS-CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD Starting in June, we would like to offer Children s Liturgy every weekend. We currently only have 7 volunteers who are doing an amazing job. Obviously, we will need more volunteers if we are having a class each Sunday. Teaching the class involves 20 minutes of your time and there is almost no preparation. Everything is provided for you. PARISH STAFF RECOMMENDED PRECAUTIONS TODAY If children have flu-like symptoms, they should be encouraged to see their doctor, to stay home and avoid public gathering places. People who have the flu can be contagious and can spread flu to others (especially through hand contact, coughing or sneezing) from one day before symptoms occur, to 5-7 days after the symptoms begin. Newly released government statistics show that influenza is especially dangerous to children and older adults. Even though the flu vaccine this year is not as effective as it could be, it is still important that people be vaccinated. Everyone is encouraged to get a flu shot, if you have not already done so. DIRECTIVES IN CASE OF DECLARED EMERGENCY PARISHIONERS ARE ENCOURAGED: not to hold hands during the reciting of the Our Father. Share the Sign of Peace without touching hands or kissing. This can be done with meaningful eye contact, smiles, and a bow of the head in reverence to one another. Receive Communion in your hands, and not on the tongue. Temporarily, the cup is not shared during Mass and Communion is only given in the species of the consecrated bread. However, arrangements can always be made for parishioners with Celiac disease, who can only receive Communion from the cup, by notifying the Church in advance. Priests, deacons, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are reminded to practice good hygiene.
