We are called to support, pray for and visit the sick often, bringing Christ s compassion and strength to all those in need. This healing sacrament is recommended to be regularly celebrated communally in the parish or individually before a person enters a hospital or health care facility, especially when a person enters hospice care, or will be having surgery soon. It should not be put off until the sick person is near death. The sick person comes to celebrate the Sacrament of the Annoiting of the Sick for the effects of healing the body, mind and spirit (physical healing if it is beneficial to salvation), strengthening, forgiveness of sins, the preparation for eternal life & conjoining their illness & suffering to the Paschal Mystery. The church s Sacramental ministry to the sick is important & necessary in order to support the body of Christ in healing of body, mind, & spirit. The sick people & their families are filled with hope & renewed strength because they are loved & valued in our community.
