1 E-News St. Paul s Episcopal Church of Wilmington, North Carolina June 12, 2013 Fourth Sunday after Pentecost 2 Samuel 11: , Psalm 32 Galatians 2:15-21 Luke 7:36-8:3 (New items are marked in RED) WEDNESDAY CHURCH NIGHT St. Paul s Wednesday evening activities will resume in September. No Adult Choir Practice on June 12. A CHANCE TO THANK AND HONOR LOYAL PRIESTS AMONG US Our new Priest-in-Charge, the Rev. Dena Bearl, will be celebrating the Eucharist with us on June 30, as we celebrate her arrival and a new beginning for St. Paul s! This is an exciting time for everyone as we look to the future in our life together. We have a great opportunity on the two Sundays before she arrives to honor two faithful priests who have meant so much to us in the past few years. Next Sunday, June 16, our parishioner priest Fr. Richard Banks will lead our services, providing us an opportunity to thank him for his loving service to us all. Fr. Richard is available to help where needed as a priest and a friend, and members of the parish have developed a strong bond with him and his wife Barbara. Let s turn out next Sunday to say Thank You as we look forward to his continuation with us in the new life of the parish. The following Sunday, June 23, former interim priest Fr. Dan Lynch will be leading the liturgy. So many at St. Paul s have benefitted from Fr. Dan s wise and warm leadership of the parish during the interim period several years ago. We are thankful for his committed service, and want to welcome his return on June 23 as we look forward to his sharing his ministry with us in the years ahead. Join your fellow parishioners at church these next few weeks as we honor Frs. Richard and Dan, two devoted servants of God who bless us with their presence.

2 OUR NEW PRIEST-IN-CHARGE THE REV. DENA BEARL June 2013 To the members of St. Paul s, Greetings! It is with great joy and anticipation that Elery and I look forward to arriving in Wilmington and beginning this new chapter of our life with you. Our first Sunday will be June 30th. In the meantime, let me introduce myself to you. St. Paul s is the fifth church to which I have been called in the span of twenty years of ordained ministry. After graduating from Virginia Theological Seminary, I returned to Jacksonville, Florida, my hometown. I began at St. Andrew s Episcopal Church & Day School as associate priest and chaplain to the school. From there, I was called to St. John s Cathedral where I served six years. Cathedral life was a rich season of excellent liturgy, urban outreach, and growing a solid Christian formation program, including a great youth group. Next, Christ Church, Greenville, South Carolina called me to serve as senior chaplain at their school. This was a time for me to test a possible call to school ministry. However, I found the altar and pulpit of parish life calling me back. The past ten years I have served as rector of Grace-Calvary in Clarkesville, Georgia. As a solo priest I ve seen how individual lives and ministry programs are integrated, woven together by the Holy Spirit, to be the living presence of Christ in the world. Every greeting, every meeting, every ordinary administrative task is part of God s holy workings among us. The joy is about being awake to God s love in everything! What do I love most about being a priest and rector? I love being in the context of a faith community on the journey of experiencing more and more how much God loves them; of growing in grace to learn what it means to truly love God and neighbor; of discovering the freedom in following Jesus through his death and resurrection into the new life in Christ. Let me share a bit of my personal life with you. I am married to Elery Denham. We have been married three years and continue to be amazed by the blessings God has provided in our union. I have two grown children, Daniel and Laura. Dan is married to Laura (two Laura s in the family!) and living in Jacksonville, Florida. Daughter Laura lives in Charlotte. My bachelor s degree is in Music Therapy, with a specialty in geriatrics. I enjoy playing music and praying through music. It is a valuable resource in creating liturgy that is both rich in tradition and relevant to our life experiences. I look forward to getting to know each of you! May God bless this new beginning for all of us. Hope to see you on the 30 th of June! In Christ s love, Dena+ SPE CONTACT INFORMATION - NOW TO JUNE 24 For the next three weeks we will be without a Rector. During this time, there may be parish needs for assistance. 3 ST. PAUL S AND ST. MARK S VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Vacation Bible School June at St. Paul s. There is still time to sign up for your favorite duty on the list in the parish hall. Last year there were 70 children in attendance and this means we need adults to assist the teachers, talk with children during snack time, guide them from one activity to another, encourage them to sing, help with set-up and clean-up and enjoy sharing this time with children. VBS begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 7:00 p.m. You could be home before dark. Please see attached agenda and registration form. ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION A new class, Bad Girls of the Bible, begins on Sunday, June 30. PRAYER SHAWLS As you wrap yourself in your shawl, may you be warmed, comforted and filled with God s grace and love. May it be as if His arms surround you, pouring His strength and healing into you, His beloved child. And may your awareness of the Lord s abundant blessings bring you peace and joy. Please contact the church office if you know of someone needing comfort at this time as we have a few shawls available. YOUTH AND CHILDREN MINISTRY LEADER Hello Everyone! This will probably be one of the last times you hear from me until I return from South Africa. This past Sunday was my last Sunday until August, and there is no youth this week. I wanted to thank everyone again for all the support that you have shown me both in coming to St. Paul's and in my trip to South Africa. Many of you have asked what I will be doing there so I will give you a brief synopsis! I will be working with an organization called Tentmaker Ministries. The town is called Ikageng and it is about an hour outside of Johannesburg. During my stay, I will be helping with their newly

4 founded pre-school, and helping to set up an after school program for the youth and possibly a women's bible study. I am very thrilled for this experience, it will be my first time traveling overseas! I will be keeping a travel blog while I'm gone, and hopefully will be able to keep it pretty up to date with my journey! Here is the link to my blog for anyone who'd like to follow it: WayfarersWorld.wordpress.com Thank you all again and God Bless! I will see you in August! In Christ, Lauren Fritz Let s continually uplift Lauren in prayer during her ministry in Africa. DIRECTOR OF MUSIC Dr. Larry Cook announced to the choir last week his intention to retire as Director of Music effective September 1, Dr. Cook has agreed to be named Director of Music Emeritus on September 1, This would insure Dr. Cook would stay active with his teaching and special projects. Dr. Cook indicated that he would be pleased to be named Director of Music Emeritus. We will schedule an event this summer to honor and celebrate Dr. Cook s contributions and commitment to St. Paul s over the past 15 years. Prayerfully yours, Bill Anlyan, Sr. Warden. SEED/PLANT EXCHANGE See Cheryl Wagoner about planning an exchange day. As I was cleaning up my garden this spring, it occurred to me that we have many gardeners at St. Paul s. Also, I always have plants that I need to divide and/or seeds that need to go somewhere. I also am often looking for plants that just never seem to be in the local garden centers but I end up getting as pass-along plants from friends. Contact Cheryl at cwagoner13@gmail.com or call (910)
