The universe went from vast nothingness and emptiness to what it is as we know it by a few words of God in only six days. Then God looked out at all that He had created and realized that it was very good. So God rested. God wasn t tired though. He didn t need to take a break in His recliner and eat Doritos while watching the Yankees play for a while (Yes I believe that God is a Yankee fan J). He rested in that He simply stopped His work of creating. But God was setting a precedent for rest to be carried forward until He would bring an end to the universe he made. The Hebrew word for rest in Genesis 2 is shabbat. Shabbat is where we get our English word Sabbath. With this sabbath that the Lord took and with the 7th day of sabbath that He ordained, God was establishing the extreme importance of rest. Labor Day is a great day that Americans love to find rest on. People head to the lake. They grill burgers and hot dogs. They enjoy a relaxing day with family or friends away from work. Physical rest is a very important thing. God does want us to take care of the bodies He has blessed us with. Sufficient rest and relaxation are necessary for physical health and mental sanity. At the same time, there is rest that is much more important. In worship, in devotions, in Bible study, and most specifically in our Savior Jesus, we find spiritual sabbath. In Him we find rest for our souls. In Him we find a Savior who gives us eternal rest for our souls. Continued:

2 Continued: As we enjoy a day of rest on Labor Day, we can remember the benefit of rest for our bodies. Yet also on Labor Day we can be reminded of the necessity of spiritual rest for our souls on a regular, daily basis. Finally, on Labor Day and every day we can look forward to the eternal paradise of heaven where both body and soul will rest forever. As the last holiday of summer is going by let us renew our commitment to gather in God s house to have that spiritual rest, to recharge our batteries each Lord s Day with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Keep your eyes on the Son, it is the only way to go thru life, Michael D MISSION OUTREACH Our Mission statement: It is the mission of the PVCC Missions Outreach to show our love for God and others by using our time, talents, energy and financial resources in support of our global, national and community missions. Project Help Project Help, located at 711 E. Harcourt Road in Angola, has been serving Angola and Steuben County since Founded by the Steuben County Ministerial Association, its goal has been to assist churches and other agencies in helping the under-resourced of our county. Through its Second Chance Store, Food Pantry, and other referral resources, Project Help meets the needs of the under-resourced of the area by having one place in which one can shop for clothing, food, or other household goods. Approximately 2,000 families are served annually with short term needs or referenced to other agencies. Project Help serves to help others over hardships in life; basic needs, support, resources, and referrals are provided to allow people in need an opportunity to improve their situation and gain confidence to lead toward self-sufficiency. Project Help is always looking for volunteers, whether it's in the Food Pantry, Clothing Store, or sorting clothing; donations are always accepted as well. Please visit or call for more information. 3 SHEPHERD S CORNER: SUMMER S END - As the summer months come to a close The heralding of autumn a touch of gold The winter wind a bitter kiss The days end with a nostalgic feel. Of mornings spent with sweet bird song Of afternoons under bright sunshine Of evenings in pleasant nights Gazing at a sparkling sky. Summer s end comes with the children s groan The adult s last moments of childhood returned As autumn comes with a touch of gold And the winter wind a bitter kiss. For some, this is an exciting time. For others, there are no doubt some sighs and groans about getting through another year of school. While schoolwork and going to classes can have their ups and downs, Colossians 3: tells us "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as if working for the Lord, and not for man". When you take a test, honor God by giving it your best effort. When meeting friends again, honor God by encouraging them and treating everyone with respect. You may not see the rewards right away, but the next verse says that "we will receive an inheritance from the Lord" whether on Earth or in heaven.
