BROWN S AUGUST SERMON SERIES Through August 23 Every year in August we do a sort of expository look at biblical stories where I read them, and we just walk through them together (letting each story take us where it wants to go). This year, I m going to let the global Christian Church choose those stories for me. During the first four Sundays in August, I will be preaching from something called The Lectionary, a list of specific lessons studied by Christian churches around the world. The weekly Lectionary list always includes lessons from the Psalms, Hebrew Scripture, the Gospels, and the Epistles. Let me encourage you to read the suggested texts each week in preparation for the following Sunday s Worship as we eavesdrop on The Word throughout the month of August. Dr. Michael B. Ashley, Sr. Dr. Ashley, Dean of the Seminary and Tenured Associate Professor of Practical Theology at New Brunswick Theological Seminary, shares lessons in leadership for people of faith. What are the theologies for traumatized Christians in the 21st Century? In light of the terror, trauma and tension we encounter on a daily basis what are appropriate Christian responses? How do you find strength and discover moments of joy in midst of attacks, anxiety and alienation? What makes you so strong? Since 1996, Dr. Ashley has served as founder and senior pastor of Abundant Joy Community Church, Jersey City. He was past president of the Blanton Peale Alumni Association and a staff psychotherapist at The Riverside Church and the Montclair Counseling Center. Dr. Ashley is a contributor to The Men of Color Study Bible and his new book is Learning to Lead: Lessons in Leadership for People of Faith. The Marble Colloquium continues in November. 5

Last year, we collected over 2,500 items that were distributed to five NYC agencies dealing with homeless and at-risk children and teens: PS 30, Icahn House East, Housing+Solutions, Single Parent Resource Center and St. Luke s LGBTQ homeless population. There are over 23,200 children living in homeless shelters in NYC! Marble s Back to School Drive is important because: One of the most devastating consequences of homelessness is the effect that it has on a child s education. A new backpack, filled with school supplies, provides the tools a child needs to succeed in school. It also provides a confidence boost, helping each child to feel more like their housed classmates.
