3 Litany People: People: Choir: People: People: People: All: Sisters and Brothers in Christ, we have come together in this church, set apart for the worship of the Almighty God and for the building up of the body of Christ. We now also set apart this pipe organ for the worship, honor, and glory of God and for ministry to God s holy people. Through the faithfulness of saints who have gone before us, through the vision and generosity of gracious donors, by the skill and dedication of expert craftspeople, and by the artistry and dexterity of gifted musicians, we come to this moment. Bless those who will be drawn by this pipe organ into closer communion with You. Bless those who, moved by its tones, will be drawn into greater wisdom, deeper learning, and finer deeds. Bless those whose voices are lifted by its song, to turn song to prayer, prayer to love, and love to life spent with You. To the glory of God, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, We dedicate this pipe organ, an instrument of praise. For the healing of life s discords and for the sounds and harmonies that express feelings deep within us, We dedicate this pipe organ, an instrument of prayer. For the comfort of the sorrowing and the lifting of the depressed, We dedicate this pipe organ, an instrument of peace. Let us pray: Eternal God, whom generations have worshiped through the gift of music, accept our praise to You in the sound of this pipe organ, which we now consecrate in Your name and to Your glory. We thank You for those who conceived and built it, and for those who will bring its sounds to life and release the music it was made to give. May this pipe organ, as part of our worship, played alone or in concert with other instruments and voices, inspire higher praise and closer devotion to You. Amen. Sing to the Lord a new song, for God has done marvelous things! Organ photos by Brian Rose. Please see pages 8-11 to read about the pipe organ and those who made it possible. 3

8 About Marble s New Pipe Organ SEBASTIAN M. GLÜCK, OPUS 20 Designed and voiced by Sebastian M. Glück, our new pipe organ encircles the listener in a manner both heard and felt. Its nearly 6,500 pipes are spread over seven divisions including three that are under expression (meaning the pipes sit behind shutters which organists will control with their feet). A new division (the Apse ) is now concealed behind the Chancel screens. This addition significantly enlarges the front organ and enhances the possibility of antiphonal effects, choral accompaniment in the Chancel, and more of a surround-sound effect in hymn accompaniment. Pipes from the Austin Organ formerly at Middle Collegiate Church were combined with many restored and re-voiced pipes from Marble s old organ, along with several ranks of newly-purchased pipes. The aggregate weight of the front and back organs, including their casework and the console, is estimated to be 23 tons. An elegantly-crafted and technologically advanced four-manual console sits in the East choir gallery and commands its 101 ranks of pipes. The addition of a fourth Solo manual for the first time in Marble s history greatly adds to the instrument s versatility. The console includes 152 drawknobs, 35 rocking tablets, 102 thumb pistons, four expression shoes, and 31 foot-operated controls all guaranteed to keep the organist extremely busy at all times! Our builder Mr. Glück describes the sources of inspiration for his Marble masterpiece: The strongest influences came from the large organs in France from 1770 to 1890, in England during the decades flanking 1900, and the best of the North American instruments from the second quarter of the last century. The choice and specific location of each voice in the Marble organ is prescribed by 350 years of great organ literature. There are several innovative touches among the organ s 101 ranks of pipes: A solo flute with two mouths per pipe; a Baroque woodwind stop made of brass and cherry wood; and the enormous aluminum resonators of the rumbling 32 Double Ophicleide. A magnificent Tuba Major in the style of the great English cathedrals provides for a noble crown. The organ s orchestral effects and daring musical gestures are designed to perform the great concert literature, lead dynamic public worship, and provide refined accompaniment to Marble s esteemed choirs. One could say the new Marble organ is truly a timeless classic. Organs of Marble Collegiate Church A Timeline 1854: Marble Collegiate Church opens with a mechanical organ in the rear gallery built by Henry Erben (III/40 stops), the most prestigious organ builder at that time. 1891: Marble gets electricity. The enlarged electro-pneumatic organ is built by J.H. & C.S. Odell (III/42 Opus 296) and moved to the Chancel with the choir; unenclosed Chancel divisions are installed behind façade pipes flanking the Chancel. 1925: Marble commissions the rebuilding of Chancel divisions by the Skinner Organ Company (III/15 Opus 525), along with a new console. 1937: The Austin Organ Company of Hartford, CT rebuilds and enlarges the entire instrument (Opus 2006), including new windchests and a new console. 1983: The organ is in need of urgent attention. The Austin Company (III/83 Opus 2689) provides an entirely new organ in the neoclassic French style. 2011: The pipe organ is completely removed to facilitate repair of the roof and Sanctuary ceiling 2013: Marble s Board votes to commission Sebastian Glück to redesign, rebuild, and expand the organ, adding some pipework from the Austin Organ formerly at Middle Collegiate Church. 2015: Sebastian Glück Organ (IV/101 Opus 20) is inaugurated. v v v Pipe Organ Talk & Demonstration Join us after Worship in the Sanctuary, 12:25-1:00pm. Builder Sebastian Glück explains and Ken Dake demonstrates the sounds. This aural tour shows off the colors of its pipes. Afterwards, look inside the newly built organ chambers. 8
