CALL FOR OFFERING AND PRAYER ANTHEM Here Are We! Mark Miller The voice God is calling its summons in our day; Isaiah heard in Zion, and now we hear God say: Whom shall I send to comfort my people in their need? Whom shall I send to loosen the bonds shame and greed? I hear My people crying in slum and mine and mill, no field or mart is silent, no city street is still. I see My people falling in darkness and despair. Whom shall I send to shatter the fetters which they bear? Refrain: Here are we, Lord, here are we! We heed, O Lord, summons and answer joyfully, here are we, Lord, here are we! Send us upon errand, let us servants be. Here are we, Lord, here are we! Send us to do work, Lord, here are we! Our strength is dust and ashes, our years a passing hour, but You can use our weakness to magnify your power. From ease and plenty save us, from pride place absolve, purge us low desire, lift us to high resolve, take us and make us holy, teach us will and way. Speak and behold, we answer, command and we obey! Refrain. John Haynes Holmes DOXOLOGY...Lasst uns erfreuen (The tune is that Hymn 4.) 6 A Message from Dr. Michael S. Bos I m so excited to join the Marble family! Like many others, I came to know Marble long before I ever stepped within the church. Through its broadcasts and books, I have been imbued with the Marble spirit. Part who I have become is because what Marble has been, and that s why I feel incredibly blessed that Marble will be my family s new church home. It s been an incredible journey to get here. I was raised in West Michigan, where I met my wife, Tena. Though we grew up in different towns, we attended the same church. We knew each other because we sat three pews apart. I still remember her dad jiggling coins in his pocket while we sang hymns, and her aunt holding the last note one beat longer than everyone else. It wasn t until college that we got to know one another. We were participating in a fundraiser for global missions, and Tena needed a ride to the outing afterwards. I was kind enough to fer her one. Two years later we were married. We have had quite an adventure together. After seminary we lived in Europe so I could do some graduate work. We then lived in Michigan where I pastored at a megachurch. We moved to Texas to start a church for people who don t like church. In Oman, we started a study center for ChristianMuslim relations, and then we moved to New York City to become part the Collegiate family. Along the way, we have been blessed with two amazing children. Austin, our youngest, is studying computer science at New Mexico State. He is engaged to a wonderful woman, Aubrey, and they will be married this July. Our eldest, Alicia, lives on the Upper West Side and is engaged to Tim, her true soul mate (and my snowboarding buddy!). They will be married in And there s also Gracie, the best dog ever! It is a great gift that my family will be able to be a part Marble. This is because Marble s ministry is grounded in remembering what God has done, is doing, and will do in our lives through Christ. In the Gospel Matthew we read that Jesus had two blind men following him asking that Jesus heal them. When they arrived at Jesus home, he invited them in and asked them a question: Do you really believe that I can do this? They answered, Yes. Jesus then touched their eyes and said, Become what you believe (9:2729, The Message). People come to Marble seeking healing and hope, and they have discovered the truth Jesus words: we can become what we believe. Marble is something so much larger than us because we trust in a God who is so much greater than us. I m thrilled to become a part this special place. Together we will continue providing dynamic, positive spiritual direction to a diverse and embracing congregation. Together we ll listen, learn, and pray as we follow God s lead into our next season ministry. And together I have no doubt we will discover that God s dream for Marble is just beginning!
7 Easter Offering 2018 Update THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! It is with much gratitude we report, that together, we have reached our Easter Offering goal $220,000! In fact, you here in the Sanctuary and you in our live streaming community, helped us to get beyond that goal last week, and we will be able to share that number with you from the Chancel this morning. We thank God and we thank you for these blessings. gifts presence in our community whether you are near or far have been a blessing to us. gifts in kind will help to build bridges hope for many who are vulnerable and in need as we support nonprits that help them to rise above conditions that are beyond their control to rise above the many ills our society including poverty, abuse, loneliness, isolation. As we have said, 100% these gifts (no overhead) will go to the nonprits with whom we partner with our gifts to do this important work. And every gift that you have given counts. This year we received 55 applications for grant requests totaling $440,000, including requests from the following two nonprits: Fresh Youth Initiatives works with lowincome, immigrant, and firstgeneration youth living or attending school in Washington Heights/Inwood. Their principal goals are to assist children and teens to flourish in school; navigate transitions; get on track for college and career; and give back to the community with compassion and care. freshyouth.org/mission/ Fresh Youth Initiatives The Osborne Association fers opportunities for individuals who have been in conflict with the law to transform their lives through innovative, effective, and replicable programs that serve the community by reducing crime and its human and economic costs. They fer opportunities for reform and rehabilitation through public education, advocacy, and alternatives to incarceration that respect the dignity people and honor their capacity to change. osborneny.org/about/ The Osborne Association Representatives from these two organizations will join us at our special Jazz Reception on Thursday, May 10, 6:158:30pm, for $250+ givers. This will also be an opportunity to spend time with our new Senior Minister, Dr. Michael Bos, and his wife, Tena Bos. Please contact Susanah Wade, SWade@MarbleChurch.org, for more details or to register. With heartfelt thanks to all who have supported Marble s Easter Offering with your gifts and prayers so that it may be a blessing to others we could not do this work without you. v v v BY THE SPIRIT!
