Order of Worship Prelude Fantasia à gusto Italiano in F Johann Krebs Welcome and greetings Joe Novenson, pastor of senior adults * Call to worship based on Psalm 119 and Psalm 117 Leader: Your word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. All: Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. Leader: Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol him all you peoples. All: For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord! * Hymn of praise 7 From All That Dwell below the Skies * Prayer of adoration Prayer of intercession for the orphan and the unborn Choral affirmation He Knows My Name Girls Ensemble I have a Maker; he formed my heart. Before even time began, my life was in his hands. He knows my name, he knows my ev ry thought. He sees each tear that falls and hears me when I call. I have a Father; he calls me his own. He ll never leave me, no matter where I go. He knows my name, he knows my ev ry thought. He sees each tear that falls and hears me when I call. text and music by Tommy Walker, 1996 Affirmation of the sufficiency of scripture Leader: Everything necessary for God s glory and man s salvation, faith, and life, is either expressly stated in Scripture or may be deduced from Scripture by good and necessary inference. While not everything in

Scripture is equally plain or equally clear to all, everything that is necessary to be known and believed for our salvation in Scripture can be understood by everyone. All: We affirm that nothing is ever to be added to Scripture, neither anything that is claimed to be a new revelation of the Spirit, nor anything that comes from human traditions. We acknowledge that we need the inward illumination of the Holy Spirit in order to have a saving understanding of what is revealed in God s Word. Leader: We also acknowledge that we are to use the light of nature and Christian prudence, in accordance with the general rules of the Word, to help us order our worship of God, the government of the church and society, and all of our human activities. All: The Scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God and what duty God requires of man. based on The Westminster Confession of Faith, , The Westminster Shorter Catechism, #3 Call to confession taken from Isaiah 5 and Proverbs 28 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight. Their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel. He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace Colossians 1:21-22 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation. * Hymn of assurance 691, vv. 1, 3 It Is Well with My Soul Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory Psalm 1 Chancel Choir Blessed are the ones who delight in the law of the Lord. On God s law they meditate day and night. They are like a tree, planted by the water, continued

which yields its fruit in season, whose leaf shall never wither, and all they do shall prosper. Blessed are the ones who delight in the law of the Lord. text and music by Mark Hayes, adapted from Psalm 1:1-3 * Doxology 731 * Prayer of dedication and thanksgiving Installation of Chad Middlebrooks as assistant pastor of adult discipleship Questions to Chad Middlebrooks 1. Are you now willing to serve this congregation as the assistant pastor of adult discipleship, agreeable to your declaration in accepting the call of the Session of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church? 2. Do you conscientiously believe and declare, as far as you know your own heart, that, in taking upon you this service, you are influenced by a sincere desire to promote the glory of God and the good of the Church? 3. Do you solemnly promise that, by the assistance of the grace of God, you will endeavor faithfully to discharge all the duties of an assistant pastor to this congregation and will be careful to conduct yourself in all respects in a manner becoming a minister of the Gospel of Christ? Questions to the congregation 1. Do you, the people of this congregation, profess your readiness to receive Chad Middlebrooks, whom the Session of this church has called as the assistant pastor of adult discipleship? 2. Do you promise to receive the word of truth from his mouth with meekness and love? 3. Do you promise to encourage him in his labors and to assist his endeavors for your instruction and spiritual edification? 4. Do you promise to furnish him with whatever you may see needful for the honor of the Christian faith and for his comfort among you? * Scripture reading from Psalm 1 Dan Wykoff (9:30) p. 843 in pew Bible and text printed in the bulletin Laura Broussard (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon Meditating on the Wisdom of the Word Brian Salter, lead pastor Pastoral prayer * Hymn of response 140 O Word of God Incarnate * Benediction * Congregational response Threefold Amen * Postlude Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word Anton Leupold * Congregation standing as you are able Musicians for this week: Byron Bleasdale cello Joy Gibbons director, piano Joshua Knight organ, piano Sam Miller violin The rosebud in the sanctuary today is for the birth of Douglas Richard Ehman IV, born to Joanna and Doug Ehman on January 4.

Psalm 1 1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. 4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. NATIONAL SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE SUNDAY TODAY WE RECOGNIZE National Sanctity of Human Life Sunday and call for prayer for the unborn, their precious mothers and fathers, and the families around them. Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church is a community which seeks to embrace God s timeless concern for the most marginalized persons in every age and culture. It is in privileged participation with Jesus followers who have acted throughout history that we speak for and stand with those who have little or no voice today. We stand with them by voicing their petitions before the throne of God. We also stand with them through partnering with city-wide ministries such as Choices Pregnancy Resource Center, Bethany Christian Services, and Lookout for Orphans. We maintain that there is grace and forgiveness in Jesus for those who have had abortions, and we long to love and serve those who have made this choice or have been impacted by it in any way. Let us unite in prayer together for all who have been affected by abortion, for the ministries that we support in our city, and for God s grace to help us be their humble friends and servants.
