Of the Father s Love Begotten... 12th-century Plainsong, arr. Terry Schlenker Of the Father s love begotten ere the world began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending, He. Of the things that are, that have been and that future years shall see, Evermore and evermore. O that birth forever blessed when the virgin full of grace By the Holy Ghost conceiving bare the Savior of our race. And the babe, the world s redeemer, first revealed His sacred face Evermore and evermore. This is He whom seers in old time chanted of with one accord Whom the voices of the prophets promised in their faithful word; Now He shines, the long-expected; let creation praise its Lord. Evermore and evermore. Aurelius Clemens Prudentius, 4th century O Magnum Mysterium Giovanni Gabrieli ( ) O Magnum Mysterium René Clausen (b. 1953) O magnum mysterium, O great mystery, et admirabile sacramentum, and wondrous sacrament, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, that animals should see the new-born Lord jacentem in praesepio! lying in their manger! Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy portare Dominum Christum. Alleluia. to bear the Lord Christ. Alleluia. A Spotless Rose... Herbert Howells ( ) James Dargan, baritone A Spotless Rose is blowing, sprung from a tender root Of ancient seers foreshowing, of Jesse promised fruit; Its fairest bud unfolds to light amid the cold, cold winter, And in the dark midnight. The Rose which I am singing, Whereof Isaiah said, Is from its sweet root springing in Mary, purest Maid: For through our God s great love and might the Blessed Babe she bare us In a cold, cold winter s night. 14th century Lo, How a Rose E er Blooming...Es ist ein Ros, arr. Donald Cashmore There Is No Rose... Robert Young ( ) There is no rose of such vertu as is the rose that bare Jesu, Alleluia. Alleluia. For in this rose conteinèd was heaven and earth in litel space, Res Miranda. Marvelous thing. By that rose we may well see there be one God in persons three, Pares forma. Of equal form. The angels sungen the shepherds to: Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gaudeamus. Let us rejoice. Leave we all this werldly mirth, and follow we this joyful birth. Transeamus. Let us go across. (from worldly to heavenly things) 15th century CALL TO WORSHIP (Congregation remains seated.) Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Service of Worship u 6:30 and 8:30pm In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The Virgin s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you. But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end. 2
3 Leader: All: Then Mary said, Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word. Like Mary, let us also hear the message of the angels, and in heart and mind go unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger. 4 ANTHEM The Shepherds Carol Bob Chilcott (b. 1955) We stood on the hills, Lady, our day s work done, Watching the frosted meadows that winter had won. The evening was calm, Lady, the air so still, Silence more lovely that music folded the hill. There was a star, Lady, shone in the night, Larger than Venus it was and bright, so bright. Oh, a voice from the sky, Lady, it seemed to us then, Telling of God being born in the world of men. And so we have come, Lady, Our day s work done, Our love, our hopes, our selves we give to your Son. 6 Tonight, we celebrate the nativity of God s only son, Jesus. In giving and receiving, we believe we follow the way of the three wise men who became the first to bear gifts to the Christ child. It fact, it was God who began giving as He gave us Himself in the form of His only begotten son. At Marble we celebrate this special season of giving with our annual Christmas Offering. We need this offering to fund our many ministries and outreach, including: Children, Youth, and Families; our fellowship groups, like the Women s Ministry and GIFTS; Pastoral Care like our Stephen Ministers; for food, for flowers, for Worship bulletins, for our website that extends our welcome and communicates who we are; and MarbleVision, connecting worshipers every week from across the U.S. and around the world. All of these things are so vital to who we are and how we serve each other and all who come to us. One tangible way we can show our faithfulness and honor Christ this Christmas is by giving to this offering. This year s goal in support of these programs and ministries is $40,000. Every time we collectively raise $1,000, an ornament made by youth from our CYF Ministry has been placed on the Marble Loft Christmas Tree, so that we can see the difference we make when we give together. Those that can make an individual gift of $1,000 or more will receive a special 2016 commemorative Marble ornament for their tree at home. It s a small but symbolic way of saying a heartfelt Thank You for a gift that does so much for so many. You can make your gift by using a Christmas Offering envelope in the Pews, Reception or visit the Marble Loft and look for the easy-to-use Giving Kiosk near the front or text your gift to For other special ways to give, pick up a Giving at Year-End brochure at Reception or in the Marble Loft, or contact T.J. Houlihan at MarbleGiving@MarbleChurch.org or ext This Christmastide, let us join together as we help Marble live into our calling to be the church we know and love. Thank you for your generosity! v v v Our new podcast, Practical Faith with Dr. Michael Brown, offers practical advice on how Faith can help us with the questions, decisions and complexities we encounter in our everyday lives. Dr. Brown offers a steady, inspiring voice on relevant topics, issues that need light shined upon them and deeper questions about faith and real life struggles.
