Dr. Powery is Dean of Duke University Chapel Associate Professor of Homiletics at Duke Divinity School. He received his B.A. in music with a concentration in vocal performance from Stanford University, his M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary, his Th.D. from Emmanuel College at University of Toronto. He has written two books, Spirit Speech: Lament Celebration in Preaching, Dem Dry Bones: Preaching, Death, Hope. In 2008, AfricanAmerican Pulpit named him one of 20 outsting black ministers under age of 40 who are helping shape future direction of church. In 2014, he was inducted into Martin Lur King Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College for his ethical spiritual leadership in academy, church, broader society.
