I Am a Child of God I am a child of God; You are God s child, it s true. Children of God are called to love one another, as Jesus taught to do. As the congregation sings, the children may go to their Sunday School classes. Our Mission & Common Life We thank God for these opportunities for fellowship, for worship, and for service. 4 The Head Usher today is Al Mead. See an usher if you need assistance. Rev. Robert English is worshiping at the Normal Heights UMC in San Diego today. After today's service, members of our Communion Server Ministry will be taking the communion elements to those who were unable to worship with us. We welcome the family of Prabha Joshi to worship this morning as she celebrates her 100th birthday. Nursery Care is available in Room 204 in the Education Building. Parents with young children are welcome to worship in the Kids Zone in the narthex. First UMC takes the care and safety of children seriously. We are a Safe Sanctuary congregation. A changing table is provided in the restroom located in the hallway west of the Fireside Room. Please see an usher for directions. Flowers at the Reredos: To our dear mother Prabha Joshi. Happy 100th Birthday! With love, from her children. During the summer months the Chancel Choir is singing some of their favorite anthems from the prior year. We hope they are your favorites also. To request prayers, please fill in a prayer card found in the pew racks and place it in the offering plate. If there are Prayer Quilts on the north wall of the sanctuary, you are invited to pray over and tie knots on the quilts. Stop by the Hospitality Table in Simkins Hall in The Shelby Center during Coffee Fellowship today to ask about membership. Visit the Fireside Room for a Prayer Quilt Ministry exhibit of photographs, prayer squares and a prayer quilt. Giving to the church through your will or trust is the most common way to continue your support beyond your lifetime. When your estate plan is prepared, consider a gift. Join the First UMC Legacy Circle. Call the church office or info@santamonicaumc.org. Next Sunday: Worship at 10 a.m.; Rev. Patricia Farris will preach the third in her Summer Sermon Series "The God We Can Know," exploring the I Am sayings of Jesus. Resident Bishop Minerva G. 5 F O C U S O N August 2, 2015 spiritual formation Communion Servers Each month when communion is offered in church, members of the Communion Server Ministry take communion out to those who cannot be present during the service. The elements that have been consecrated in the service are offered, and an abridged service, prepared by Rev. Farris, is conducted. By including others, we expand the Table of the Lord to include those who cannot be present in body. This service is available to anyone in the congregation, not just those who are homebound or in a care facility long-term; anyone who is laid up and unable to come for any reason is welcome to join us this way. Please call the office as far in advance as you can to arrange this. Also, if you know someone in the congregation who might want communion, please contact one of the clergy or the office. Those volunteers who are involved in this ministry feel blessed in being able to serve in this way. In the breaking of bread and the partaking of the wine we are united in the body of Christ and truly experience his presence. If you are interested in becoming a communion server, please contact one of the clergy or the church office. Altar Guild What, you may ask, is an Altar Guild? The focal area for worship in front of you is called the chancel area. It includes the pulpit on your left, the lectern on your right, the Table or Altar in the center. Behind the choir is the area known as the reredos on which the large candlesticks, flowers and cross are placed. Seasonal paraments made of beautiful cloth are placed on the Table, pulpit and lectern. The candlesticks, collection plates, and special items for communion, baptisms and holy days, such as Advent and All Saints must be prepared and placed appropriately. The Altar Guild is a group of volunteers who prepare God s house for worship in this way each week. If you are interested in volunteering for this ministry (you can volunteer for one Sunday a month), please call the church office. first united methodist church of santa monica 1008 Eleventh Street, Santa Monica, CA info@santamonicaumc.org
