For this was made a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob. Psalm 81:3-4 All Hail the Power of Jesus Name Coronation INVOCATION AND THE LORD S PRAYER (use debts ) ANTHEM The Old Church Stephen Paulus The old church leans nearby a well-worn road, upon a hill that has no grass or tree; the winds from off the prairie now unload the dust around it fitfully. The path that leads up to the open door is worn and greyed by many toiling feet of us, who listen to the Bible lore and once again the old-time hymns repeat. And every Sabbath morning we are still, returning to the altar waiting there; a hush, a prayer, a pause, and voices fill the Master s House with a triumphant air. The old church leans awry and looks quite odd, but it is beautiful to us, and God. Della B. 3 FLOWERS ARE PLACED IN THE SANCTUARY TODAY In overflowing gratitude for Dr. Michael B. Brown by Marble Collegiate Church. WE EXTEND OUR SINCERE CONGRATULATIONS TO DR. MICHAEL BROWN, AS A RECIPIENT OF THE 2018 NORMAN VINCENT PEALE AWARD FOR POSITIVE THINKING. Dr. Brown will be honored at the Blanton-Peale Institute and Counseling Center s Gala, Tuesday, April 24. For details, visit v v v Easter Offering Update We are immensely thankful for the Marble Community one that extends grace and helps to provide hope. Today, we also bid farewell to our Senior Minister, Dr. Michael Brown, who has championed the words and deeds of Jesus from the first day he stepped into our sacred space; he has walked alongside this community as together we extended outreach beyond the walls of Marble, and we are thankful to him for that. Dr. Brown always says the message of Jesus is clear we are to serve as Jesus served because in doing so we get to love as Jesus loves. Coalition for the Homeless sent us a letter after receiving a grant from last year s Easter Offering and their words speak to how the Marble Community has extended hope and love. This is what they shared: Tonight, thousands of homeless women and men will bed down on the streets deprived of even the basic protection of shelter. But through the generous spirit of your congregants, and thanks to your grant, the Grand Central Food Program was able to distribute 1,000 hot, nutritious meals. Over the course of the past year, the GCFP has brought 320,000 meals to homeless and desperately poor New Yorkers, and provided outreach services to help those living on the street make a stable return to housing. Your support is critical in ensuring that the GCFP can be there every single night of the year for the vulnerable New Yorkers who truly need us. Please help us continue to support nonprofits like Coalition for the Homeless by giving to the Easter Offering. To date and together, we have given $187, for the work that our Easter Offering supports but we still need an additional $32, to make our goal of $220,000. Please give whatever you can: Use an Easter Offering envelope found in the pews and at 29th Reception Give at MarbleChurch.org/Give/Easter-Offering Mail checks to Marble, attention: Easter Offering Call , ext. 248 to give over the phone or get information about making a matching gift. RECEPTION FOR GIFTS OF $250 OR MORE An Evening with Rev. and Mrs. Michael Bos Thursday, May 10, 6:15-8:30pm Get to know our new Senior Minister (as of April 23) and his wife, Tena. 5 A Message from Dr. Michael B. Brown This is a special day for the Browns not an easy one, but a special one. After all these years at Marble, we come now to the conclusion of this lovely journey we ve made together. It has been in every way a source of inexpressible joy and thanks for us. In June of 1974, fresh out of Duke Divinity School, I stood and preached my first sermon as a full-time Pastor at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church in Randleman, NC. Today I preach my final sermon as a full-time Pastor, and I am honored that it is in America s oldest and greatest Protestant congregation. Today s sermon, Circling Back, is actually the same sermon I preached those years ago on my first Sunday. That day it was called Who Is This Jesus? As I told you last September when I announced our plans to retire from Marble, I want to wind up where I started out doing my best to tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love. Page and I thank our family members who are here today: Adam Alison, Andy, and Anderson Katharine Zachary. Across many years and through the highs and lows of life, you have been our rocks, our blessings, and our pride. We love you more than words could ever express. Also, I personally thank Page for supporting and encouraging me, for helping me discover over and over the positive power of faith, for the listening, the laughter, and the love. To the staff of Marble, I am grateful to you and for you. To a person, you have labored long, hard, and faithfully. We have been co-workers, but also friends. Though our work together has now ended, I pray our friendship will last throughout the years. And to the members of Marble Collegiate Church Thank you! Thank you for receiving us, accepting us, encouraging us, inspiring us, loving us, and serving Christ and church with us. You have not just been the church we serve. You have been the family of faith who taught us what that phrase actually means. If we live to be 100, every day we will thank God for the privilege of sharing this sacred time with you. You are the best, and we will love you forever. May God grant to this historic church an equally exciting future. God is with you. You are not alone. Go forth with confidence, courage, and compassion. Michael The Brown Family,

6 Michael & Page, THANK YOU & BLESS YOU, DR. BROWN! Your years with us have been all too brief, but this has not dampened your positive impact upon Marble s congregation one that now stretches across the country and around the globe. You brought wisdom, experiences and southern warmth to us that enhanced your messages from the pulpit and helped us grow spiritually in a period of ever challenging times. Your hospitality allowed for many special, private moments that provided opportunities to know you and your family. We treasure this. We hope your fondness for jazz and fine food, and for people who love you will draw you back to us from time to time. Meanwhile, go forth with our blessings and fond wishes in your quest to share God s love and mercy with the world. Jerry Link, and many, many more! Three years ago I experienced a miracle. I walked into Marble as an agnostic, and I left a believer. I walked in as a non-christian, and I left baptized as a disciple of Jesus Christ. When I met Michael Brown, I also met Jesus! God, working through Michael s teaching, inspired me to become a Christian, which has transformed my life into a life with purpose and meaning. That ultimately has led to joy, fulfillment, and peace. Words can t express the gratitude and thankfulness I have for Michael, and for his profound impact on my life. Nick Gilman From the poem At The Gate of the Year by Minnie-Louise Haskins, I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year, give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown, and he replied, go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than a light, and safer than a known way. Michael Brown has shown us week, after week, that God is the way, the truth and the light. Gwen Widell Dr. Michael Brown is one of the most Christ-like people I ve ever encountered! I love his sermons, especially that his practical, purposeful, positive lessons continue to lift me up throughout the week, and long after. I ll deeply miss him and will always be grateful for the eternal gift he s shared with me: preaching, teaching and caring that have transformed my life and inspired me to stop playing around and actively seek God. Thank you, Dr. Brown! D Simmons Jendayi 6
