1 MAY, CAMPUS DIRECTOR OF FOCUS AT UW-MADISON TO SPEAK ON MAY 20 Nathan Stanley is the UW-Madison Campus Director of FOCUS, the FELLOWSHIP OF CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. Nathan, and Therese Kinsley, another Missionary Staff member working with FOCUS in Madison, will be the speakers. FOCUS was founded in 1998 by past international president of CUF, Curtis Martin. It is a national outreach to secular and Catholic college campuses, designed to bring the fullness of the life and truth of the Catholic Church to college students. FOCUS is working to play a vital role in the new evangelization called for by Pope John Paul II. Nathan and Therese will explain how FOCUS works to transform the culture of the university campus by helping college students answer the radical call of Christian living. Nathan is from Kansas City, Missouri, and is a 2004 graduate of Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. He is beginning his fourth year with FOCUS. Therese, who is from Harvard, Illinois, is a 2006 graduate of the University of Illinois and is starting her second year with FOCUS. She will be at Illinois State University next year. FOCUS works with recent college graduates, trains them in Church teachings, Scripture and the practical aspects of ministry, and sends them out, typically in teams of four, to serve on college campuses. FOCUS works with the blessing of the local bishop and the support of the pastor and existing ministries. Knight has been named president of Catholic Memorial High School, effective, July 1. He is currently the associate head of the Academy of the Sacred Heart school in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Before joining that school in 2001, he spent 14 years at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy. In addition, the article adds, the

2 school s principal, Kathleen Cepelka, is scheduled to become the associate dean of Marquette University s School of Education on July 15. MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR MSGR. He will be honored at a dinner on Sunday, October 14, at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center on South Howell Avenue. GOD BLESS ARCHBISHOP RAYMOND BURKE FOR HIS STRONG PRO-LIFE STAND According to a May 3, 2007, report from CWNews.com, A Catholic high school in Missouri has rescinded an invitation to US Senator Claire McCaskill to speak at her daughter s graduation. The report further states, St. Joseph s Academy in Frontenac,..a suburb of St. Louis, had planned on a commencement speech by Senator McCaskill, whose daughter is in the graduating class. But the school withdrew the invitation on orders from the St. Louis archdiocese. A spokesman for the archdiocese said that Archbishop Raymond Burke had not personally made the decision to rescind the invitation, but the move was in line with the archbishop s policy barring Catholic institutions from providing public platforms for public officials who reject Church teachings on serious moral issues. Senator McCaskill, who identifies herself as a Catholic, supports legal abortion and embryonic stem-cell research. The senator s office said that she was sorely disappointed by the archdiocesan decision. Please note the May 6, 2007, NATIONAL CATHOLIC REGISTER story, in this newsletter, reporting Archbishop Burke s strong pro-life action regarding the scheduled performance by Sheryl Crow at the Bob Costas Benefit for the SSM Cardinal Glennon Children s Medical Center. An April 25 press release from the Archdiocesan Office of Communications states that, Ms. Crow is well-known as a [pro] abortion activist. She has lent her celebrity status to the promotion of legislation, such as Missouri s Amendment 2, that creates legal protection for human cloning and the destruction of human beings who are embryos. Her appearance at a fundraising event for Cardinal Glennon Children s Medical Center is an affront to the identity and mission of the medical center, dedicated as it is to the service of life and Christ s healing mission The Archbishop has asked the Board of Governors of the Cardinal Glennon Children s Foundation to remove his name from any materials promoting the event, and has resigned as Chairman of the Board. (THE NEXT NEWSLETTER WILL BE PUBLISHED IN SEPTEMBER) REPRINT: ARCHBISHOP BURKE S STAND National Catholic Register, May 6, 2007 Archbishop Raymond Burke spoke out against a Catholic medical center for scheduling pro-abortion advocate Sheryl Crow for a benefit concert. In a press conference on April 25, Árchbishop Burke of St. Louis explained his protest over the singer's appearance: "This Saturday, Sheryl Crow is scheduled to perform at the Bob Costas Benefit for the SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. "Ms. Crow is well-known as an abortion activist. She has lent her celebrity status to the promotion of legislation, such as Missouri's Amendment 2, that creates legal protection for human cloning and the destruction of human beings who are embryos. After efforts failed to convince organizers to cancel Crow's participation, Archbishop Burke resigned from his post as chairman of the foundation's board of governors and asked that his name be removed from any promotional material for the benefit event.

"When there is a significant risk that others could be led to evil, as the one responsible for the spiritual and moral. well-being of the faithful entrusted to my pastoral care, I am obliged in justice to act," Archbishop Burke reiterated his support for the medical center's apostolate, telling its management and employees of his "continued admiration and support for the wonderful treatment provided at our excellent children's medical center." He added: "I cannot say enough about their commitment to the lives and health of the children they serve." However, he reiterated in his statement: "When, for economic gain, a Catholic institution associates itself with such a high-profile proponent of the destruction of innocent lives, members of the Church and other people of good will have the right to be confirmed in their commitment to the gospel of life." William Donohue of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights said, "Those who are now criticizing Archbishop Burke - saying he should demur given the money being raised for a worthy cause - should explain how they would react if David Duke were scheduled to speak at a fundraising event to fight sickle-cell anemia in East St. Louis.
