Since the early days of the Church, Christians have marked the passage of time by devoting days and seasons to honor Jesus Christ, his Mother Mary, and the Apostles and Saints. The liturgical year revolves around the two great cycles of Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter, each of which, in similar but distinctive ways, allows us to prepare for and then rejoice afresh in the two greatest events of our salvation: the birth of Jesus, and his Passion and Resurrection. We tend to focus so much on the birth of Jesus at Christmas that we forget that there is another fundamental aspect of the Christmas Season: the anticipation of Jesus return to complete the word of our redemption. Whenever we pray the Lord s Prayer, we say Thy Kingdom come! Whenever we pray the Nicene Creed, we affirm that Jesus will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. Essential to our Christian faith is that great affirmation of Jesus return in glory. And so, from ancient times the Church has emphasized the twofold character of Christmas, as the Feast of the Incarnation of the Word, and as the joyful anticipation of Christ return to establish the fullness of his Kingdom. Our joyful celebration of Christ s birth in the manger in Bethlehem and of his awaited return in glory requires preparation. Thus, we celebrate the season of Advent which means coming as a time of preparing our hearts and minds for the coming of the Lord. We prepare through the particular prayers and Mass readings of the season, as well as other customs that remind us to watch for Jesus arrival. Perhaps the most familiar is the Advent wreath, which we have in the church, and which many people use at home, as a focus of daily prayer at meal time or before retiring in the evening. Many people also use an Advent calendar to mark the passing days. Within today s bulletin you will find a double-sided Advent and Christmas calendar with many wonderful suggestions for observing the season of Lent. If you go to the web address at the top of the calendar, you will find the same calendar with links to resources that will enrich your preparation for the coming of the Lord. Advent is one of the most wonderful seasons of the Church year, but one we often almost bypass because of our focus on Christmas itself. I encourage all of us to embrace more fully the traditions of Advent that allow us to prepare more deeply for the joy of Christmas and all that it means, as we celebrate both the birth of our Savior and his return in glory. ~ Fr John David Bulletin notices and advertising: All information must be sent to the parish office no later than 8AM on Mondays. Please use if at all possible and send to: emazary@olmc.org. If you would like to advertise on the back of the bulletin, please call J.S. Paluch at

(Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, #39). Holiness simply means our closeness or intimacy with God. The call to marriage is connected to this call to holiness, since God not only calls us to holiness but also gives each of us a means to carry out that vocation. Through the experience of being loved by another person, spouses can come to know what God s love is like. Just one of the many gifts of a God-centered marriage!
