3 Page 3 December 25, 2016 Come, Let Us Adore Him O God, [you] have made this most sacred night radiant with the splendor of the true light. These are the opening words of the collect for the Midnight Mass of the Nativity, when Catholic Christians around the world gather to celebrate with exuberant joy the incarnation of the Word of God: the coming of the God of the universe in the living flesh of a tiny infant born in a stable in Bethlehem. Jesus is the true light. He is the brightness of God s redeeming love in the darkness of a sinful and broken world. He is the radiance of God s passionate love for each one of us who yearns to know the fullness of life which God alone can provide. True light: the word true means perfectly consistent with reality; it also means accurately and exactly aligned. Jesus is our true light in that he is the Truth burning in our world bright as the sun; he is also accurately and exactly aligned with his Father, who is love. This means that Jesus will always and without fail guide us to the fullness of his Father s love, which makes us whole and complete in Christ, giving us the freedom to be perfectly ourselves in the image of the one who made us. More and more we hear that ours is a new age of anxiety, in which we seem to have so much and yet feel so uncertain about who we are, where we are going, what really matters in life. The only way to find genuine, lasting peace is by reconnecting with the one who made us, loves us, and redeems us: Jesus Christ himself. When we celebrate the birth of the Savior, we also rejoice in our own rebirth to new life in and through him. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, continually reminds us that the very heart of our lives is the encounter with the living Lord. Jesus, the Word of God made flesh, out of sheer love came to bring us life, peace, and joy. He brings us, like prodigal sons and daughters, back to the Father who never ceases to love us, who yearns for our return, and who celebrates with the greatest of feasts when we do come home. This wonderful Christmas feast gives each one of us a moment to pause and reflect: have I given myself fully, with abandon, to Jesus Christ, who loves me more than I can imagine, and who has come in the flesh to give me everything I need to receive the forgiving and joyful embrace of God? Perhaps the greatest way we can celebrate Christmas is to let go of the past, turn with trust to that infant Jesus in the manger, and joyfully embrace him afresh, who has already embraced each one of us with forgiveness, freedom, and life. ~ Fr John David Staff Extensions Pastor Rev. 6 Page 6 December 25, 2016 Social Ministry Transformed by The Eucharist Reaching Out into community Special Thanks to Casey Cheaney and Deer Park Elementary School After hearing our plea for food for our Food Pantry, one of the youth of our parish decided to act. Casey Cheaney inquired at his school if it would be possible to lead a food drive to benefit Our Lady of Mt Carmel Food Pantry. The answer was yes, and it was left in his hands to get it done. With the overwhelming support of his fellow students at Deer Park Elementary they collected over 1600 cans of food! This is a phenomenal gift. Many Thanks!! Sincerest Gratitude Christmas Partnership w/ NNPD Just to update the Parish on our Christmas Partnership with the NNPD we had approx. 6 parishioners leave our campus with about 6-7 police officers and all the packages and food on Friday, December 16 th. First of all, it was an overwhelming number of packages and the Police Dept was blown away, but in addition, the families who were receiving gifts were most taken by the outpouring of love not only from this parish community but by the officers who delivered with us. Thank you for your support of the angel gift tags! The families expressed their gratitude and wanted you to know. This partnership was a huge success and is one we will continue next year. Ladies of Carmel and Knights of Columbus Heartfelt gratitude to both the Ladies of Carmel, who delivered our Thanksgiving food to the seniors on our list, and the Knights of Columbus, who went out last Sunday to deliver our Christmas food and packages to the seniors in need. These personal deliveries are so important to the aging community that we serve, as many of them cannot get out on their own, and your visit is always so very welcome. Your partnership with this program is most appreciated, and the joy with which you serve is infectious. THANK YOU! In addition, thank you to all those who provided us with the gift cards to go in the Christmas packages by supporting our Christmas tree tags. This was a big treat!! PORT Sign-ups heading our way...
