3 Page 3 April 2, 2017 The Way of Faith Lent and the Liturgy We are past the halfway point in Lent. This last Sunday we celebrated "Laetare Sunday," named for the first Latin word in the Entrance Antiphon for the Mass: "Rejoice, Jerusalem, all who love her. Be joyful, all who were mourning; exult and be satisfied at her consoling breast." In the midst of all of our reflection and preparation, our acts of penance, prayer, and almsgiving, it is good to be reminded by the Church in her liturgy that the time of rejoicing--easter, and all that it means for us--is not too far away. But even as the joy of Easter, of Resurrection, is always a part of our daily lives of faith, the emphasis of Lent is more somber, more restrained, as we look within ourselves, face our sins, failures, and shortcomings, and offer them to the Lord that we may be healed and prepared by him to receive at Easter the new life that sustains us. Lent is a season of self-denial and plainness, and this is reflected in the liturgy of the Mass itself. The priests and deacons wear violet vestments, the traditional color of penance. The music of the Mass is much simplified: instruments are used only to accompany the singing of the congregation. The Gloria, that great hymn of joy and praise sung before the opening Collect of the Mass, is not used during Lent. The selections for hymns and other music focus on the penitential character of the Lenten season. Likewise, the worship environment reflects that same somber character. No flowers are used in the church, except on Laetare Sunday. By ancient tradition, the candles around the altar, usually bleached white beeswax, are replaced with unbleached beeswax candles, their brownish tint another reminder of the plainness of the season. As the Lenten season moves toward its conclusion, the readings and prayers of the liturgy begin to shift in emphasis from a focus on our penitential preparation to a focus on the sufferings of Christ. The liturgy becomes even more stripped down, and the environment for worship becomes even plainer. From the Fifth Sunday of Lent until the Easter Vigil, all crosses and other images in the church are veiled with purple cloth, the absence of the familiar reminding us to search for Christ all the more vigorously. The only images which are never veiled are the Stations of the Cross, which themselves lead us along the path of these days of Lent: Jesus by his actions strengthens us in our own acts of prayer, penance, and almsgiving, as we imitate the one who bore the weight of our sins. We sense the excitement and joy of Easter coming in a few weeks. But for now, we prepare, walking with Jesus on his journey of suffering and self -denial toward the cross, so that by his death our death is conquered, and by his rising again we are given new life. ~ Fr. New Ministry Team Forming: Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Jesus said, Let the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. Matthew 19:14 The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori based Catholic religious formation process that is grounded in Sacred Scripture, Catholic Doctrine, Liturgy and Prayer. Themes are presented in such a way as to develop the religious potential present in every child: the capacity to love and be loved and be in deep relationship with God. Children learn in a specially prepared environment called the Atrium, a sacred, hands on space where catechists and children hear, ponder and celebrate the most essential mysteries of our faith. Do you have experience with Catechesis of the Good Shepherd or the Montessori Method? Are you handy with a saw, paintbrush or sewing machine? Are you passionate about developing the religious potential of young children in an environment that is more a place of worship than a traditional classroom? You are invited to join our CGS team. Join us as we experience a deeper relationship with God through prayerful meditation of scripture and begin the intentional preparation of our Atrium at OLMC Church. Contact Christa to learn more.

6 Page 6 April 2, 2017 Social Ministry Transformed by The Eucharist Reaching Out into community Transform the Heart Lenten Coin Banks Some quotes from the Docat & the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church on The Principals of The Common Good: Vatican Council II says that the common good is the sum of those conditions of social life which allow social groups & their individual members relatively thorough & ready access to their own fulfillment. (Docat # 87) The goal of the individual is to accomplish good. The goal of the society is the common good. The common good, in fact, can be understood as the social & community dimension of the moral good. (Compendium of Social Doctrine #164) The common good refers both to the good of all human beings & to the good of the whole human being. (Docat # 87) To desire the common good means to be capable of thinking beyond one s own needs. We must be interested in the good of all, even of people nobody thinks about because they have no voice or no power. The goods of the earth are there for everyone. And if each person thinks only of himself, then coexistence becomes a war of all against all. (Docat # 88) DID YOU NOTICE SOMEONE TODAY WHO WAS SUFFERING A PARTICULAR KIND OF POVERTY? SADNESS, LONELINESS, ILL HEALTH, SPIRITUAL, FINANCIAL, OVERALL GRUMPINESS OR POOR OF PATIENCE? Have you found yourself to have suffered any of those types of poverty? Place a few coins in your Lenten Coin Bank as a way of showing your solidarity with that person and offer those up who are poor in your prayers. Keep in mind the principle of the common good this week: Read Proverbs 11: According to these verses, what is the result of generosity? What is the result of selfishness?
