3 Page 3 August 27, 2017 Be a Rock Peter's history as a follower or friend of Jesus is a bit spotty. It might be natural to wonder if Jesus, in giving him the keys to the kingdom, didn't feel a bit like a parent giving a teenager the keys to the family car. But it was at the moment when God's power and presence broke through everything else to raise up Peter's great profession of faith in Christ as Messiah that Jesus chose to establish the bond between the loving, forgiving mercy of heaven and our vocation to be witnesses of that love, mercy, and forgiveness on earth. Like any parent, Jesus no doubt foresaw the failings, the irresponsible maneuvers or impaired senses, the collisions that the church would be headed for. But, most importantly, he also saw us at that moment as God prefers to see us: capable of manifesting great faith, with a willingness to remain at the feet of Christ to understand what it truly means to be Messiah and Christ. As the letter to the Romans points out to us today, we have not known the mind or the wisdom of God, but God knows us and still chooses to manifest the reign of justice, joy, beauty, and peace through us. You are the best invitation a person can receive. On Tuesday, September 5 th, we will have an Open House for those who wish to hear about the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Open House: Tuesday, August 29 th RCIC: Initiation of Children, Youth and Teens On Tuesday, August 29 th, we will hold an Open House and Parent Meeting for Children, Youth and Teens who wish to prepare to celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation. Who is this for? Those age 7 & above who have never been baptized Those age 7 & above who were baptized in another Christian faith but now wish to participate in the Catholic Church Baptized Catholic youth in grades 5 and above who missed their First Communion The Church asks that children, youth and teens in the above categories participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation. Classes are held on Tuesday nights, 7 8:30pm, in St. Michael Hall. To pre-register or to discuss your situation, please contact Christa. Catholics Come Home Have you been away from the active practice of your Catholic Faith? Would you like to feel more connected with your childhood faith or learn more about it as an adult? The Nursery is offered during the 10:00 a.m. Mass for children ages 1-3 years old. The nurturing staff and volunteers provide a safe, Christian environment for the children in their care. Parents who utilize the nursery are asked to volunteer about one Sunday per month to keep our Co-Op Nursery staffed each Sunday. Kingdom Kids Worship (1 st -5 th Grades) Kingdom Kids Worship provides a liturgical adaptation of the Sunday readings for children in 1 st -5 th grade. The Children Celebrate! Liturgy of the Word with Children program guides the parish catechists proclamation of the Gospel. At OLMC, Kingdom Kids Worship is available at the 10:00am Mass on the first, second and third Sunday of the month. Children process out of Mass & return before the Eucharist. Whether you are parents-to-be, parents of an infant, or parents of a young child, we invite you to consider having your child baptized into the Catholic faith at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. First Sacrament Parent Orientation Do you have a child in second or third grade? Gathered By Grace Gathered By Grace: Intergenerational Faith Formation At Gathered By Grace, adults, youth, and children come together twice a month. These gatherings are an opportunity to get to know fellow parishioners, and deepen your relationship with Jesus Christ. The concept of lifelong learning invites each of us to continuously grow in our faith by learning and sharing with others in our community. We begin with a light meal, then break out into age groups. Adults, youth and children experience the Word of God and discover Church teachings through the same doctrinal themes. During each session, adults participate in adult presentations and discussions. At the same time, children and youth are introduced to a new unit of study by catechists in age-appropriate groups. Parents then reinforce the unit theme with their children throughout the month. SPRED (Special Religious Development) Our SPRED community has ONE OPENING for a new adult friend. We refer to the individuals we welcome with disabilities as friends. SPRED at OLMC has trained catechists (volunteers) waiting to welcome you to our community! We have three SPRED communities, one group on Tuesdays and two groups on Wednesdays. Do you know of someone who could benefit from being a part of a small community of faith? Please call Christa at X107. SPRED is a growing ministry that welcomes children & adults living with developmental disabilities to develop an awareness of God in their lives. Within these communities of faith, individuals discover friendship in one-on-one relationships, a place where they belong, and their own giftedness and dignity. Assistive Listening Devices Available Our parish offers personal Assisted Listening Devices (ALD s). An ALD is a small, personal receiver device meant to work with or without a hearing aid in order to help ensure that everyone who comes to worship will be able to hear what is being said. These devices are available for loan during all liturgies. OLMC has 4 ALD receivers with earbuds which can be checked out at the Welcome Desk before weekend Masses. If you could benefit from using an ALD during any other gathered event at OLMC, please contact the parish office.

The Office environment is relatively fast paced with many moving parts and pieces; although I am only asking you to consider being one of those parts. These sessions are part of a program entitled, Renewing the Catholic Family, developed by the Nashville Dominican Sisters, and will be conducted in the Gathering Room from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm on the second Monday of each month, beginning on September 11 th. The first session will focus on our fatherhood being rooted in God the Father, and the institution of marriage as a vocation, a covenant, and a Sacrament.
