3 Page 3 September 4, 2016 Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, the nun known to the world as Mother Teresa of Calcutta, was born to Albanian parents in what is now Macedonia in As a Sister of Loreto, she taught girls in her order's mission schools in India for twenty years. But in 1946, on a train journey in the mountains, she suddenly realized that God was calling her to something more--to care for the poorest of the poor. In the city of Calcutta, many homeless people lived and died on the street. One day Sister Teresa came across a half-dead woman lying in front of a hospital. She stayed with the woman until she died. From that time on, she dedicated herself to caring for the poorest of the poor in India. She founded the Nirmal Hriday ("Pure Heart") Home for the Dying in a former temple in Calcutta, where poor, homeless people were cared for and allowed to die with dignity when no one else would have them. She also founded an orphanage and leprosy hospital. Other young women, including some of her former students, soon joined her in her work with the sick, the poor, and the forgotten of Calcutta's slums. They formed a new worldwide order of nuns, the Missionaries of Charity. Like Mother Teresa, they wear a plain white, blue-edged sari, the traditional dress of Indian women. They live a simple, prayerful life, and take care of people all over the world wherever there is need. Mother Teresa won several awards for her work, including the Nobel Peace Prize. She always used the money from such prizes to found new homes and hospitals for poor people. She died in 1997 at the age of 87. Her life and work remind us that happiness and holiness come from doing "something beautiful for God." She was beatified in 2003, and will be canonized on Sunday, September 4, Copyright (c) J. S. 4 Page 4 September 4, 2016 Gathered By Grace Gathered By Grace: Intergenerational Faith Formation At Gathered By Grace, adults, youth, and children come together twice a month. These gatherings are an opportunity to get to know fellow parishioners, and deepen your relationship with Jesus Christ. The concept of lifelong learning invites each of us to continuously grow in our faith by learning and sharing with others in our community. We begin with a light meal, then break out into age groups. Adults, youth and children experience the Word of God and discover Church teachings through the same doctrinal themes. During each session, adults participate in adult presentations and discussions. At the same time, children and youth are introduced to a new unit of study by catechists in age-appropriate groups. Parents then reinforce the unit theme with their children throughout the month. Kingdom Kids Worship (1 st -5 th Grades) Kingdom Kids Worship provides a liturgical adaptation of the Sunday readings for children in 1 st -5 th grade. The Children Celebrate! Lectio Divina for Women Join us for a prayerful experience using the upcoming Sunday Gospel as a focus point. This is a quiet time of prayer and reflection using the music of Taize. We invite all women of the parish to come, try a session on Friday mornings. We meet in the Gathering Room every other Friday from 10 am to 11 am. Upcoming dates are: September 9 and 23. Come join us! Women s Thursday Morning Bible Study Ladies, join us this Fall for an exciting new Bible study. Come discover St. Luke s unique insights into the heart of God, with the study of St Luke: The Gospel of Mercy, a DVD study series. To best understand the scope and scale of God's mercy, we will begin with an 8-session Doors of Mercy program, of how God prepared a people over thousands of years to receive Him. RCIC: Initiation of Children, Youth and Teens On Tuesday, Sept. 13, we will hold an Open House and Parent Meeting for Children, Youth and Teens who wish to prepare to celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation. Who is this for? Those age 7 and above who have never been baptized. Those age 7 and above who were baptized in another Christian faith but now wish to participate in the Catholic Church Baptized Catholic youth in grades 6 and above who missed their First Communion The Church asks that Children, youth and teens in the above categories participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation. Inclusive Ministries SPRED: Special Religious Development SPRED is designed to form adult communities of faith into which adults with intellectual disabilities are welcomed. This ministry provides a way for the participants to encounter God in community, in a manner that is appropriate to their gifts. Outreach Office Needs You The Outreach Office is open during the week: Mon, Wed, Thurs from 12-2pm & Tues and Fri from 9-11am We are in need of volunteers who would be willing to answer the phone line for us and screen/schedule those calling us in need of assistance. Training is provided, no experience necessary. What is necessary, you might be asking yourself? A heart willing be broken open by the Holy Spirit and surrendering to His call. In addition the office can be fast paced and hardly one day can be counted on to be the same as the day before. Humility is a must, as we learn from each other every day. Needed is a willingness to go the journey with another. The volunteer decides the schedule that works best for them. Work one day a week, two days month, or one day a month. That s up to you. Cursillo Weekends The Greater Hampton Roads Cursillo Movement has scheduled a Men's Cursillo Weekend for September and a Women's Cursillo Weekend for October Both of these weekends will be held at the Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center in Toano. The weekends will be led by local priests and lay spiritual directors. They are joined and supported by local Cursillo leaders in conducting these weekends. 7 Page 7 September 4, 2016 Pastoral Ministries Circle of Hope Come join the Circle if you are dealing with Cancer currently or are in remission or if you are dealing with a Chronic illness. Spouses/caregivers are also welcome. We meet on the second Saturday of every month from 10 am to 11:30. Our meetings are a positive, Catholic support group. We support each other through prayer, discussion, encouraging support material, and every meeting includes some humor and feasting! Don t face your diagnosis alone. Come try a meeting and we know you will keep coming. If you would like to discuss this further, call Janet in the parish office. Our next meeting is THIS Saturday, September 10 th. Our meetings are held in the Gathering Room of the Church. OLMC Prayer Chain The bilingual prayer team leader of the day checks daily and sends prayer requests to volunteers who pray for those needs. Liturgy and Music Lector Training Are you interested in proclaiming the word at Sunday Mass? Lector Training will be held on Monday, September 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Church for anyone who would like to become involved in the Lector ministry.
