We are a diverse, gifted and joyful people who share a common belief in the Word of Jesus Christ. Our Mission, like that of Jesus Christ and His apostles, is to proclaim the Kingdom of God through living the gospel and to grow in faith, holiness and service. 2 DATE & SUBJECT July 31, 2016 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Avoid greed in all its forms. (Luke 12:13-21) The person in the crowd had a legitimate request of Jesus, so he thought. All he wanted was what was rightfully his by law: his share of the inheritance. But Jesus is not interested in his plight at all. Jesus treats the matter like a useless question. Money is no useless matter to us. It generates the life we know and want to keep. We go to great lengths to make money, sometimes doing things we do not like or are not particularly proud of. We need money to survive in this culture, and we need it to take care of those who depend on us. And if we splurge once in a while on some unnecessary thing, is that so bad? Jesus is not intent on laying a guilt trip on you about how you spend your money. He just wants us to be clear that the getting of money a temporal matter that has a mortality of its own. If the getting of money is what your life is about, what will you do when the life of money is behind you? The time is coming for each of us when a million dollars will simply be so much paper. How would you define the purpose of your life? How does what you do with your days accomplish that purpose? In what ways do you feel tugged to serve the world? In what ways do you serve the higher realm of God s kingdom? Application: Put your treasure in lasting things this week. Give time to someone who asks for it. 3 Greetings of Peace! Pastor s Column This week is the parish Rummage Sale. Proceeds will support Youth Ministry. Come to the Rummage Sale and find some treasures. The Sale takes place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in the Olsavsky Center! Summer work and projects continue on our parish buildings and grounds. We strive to be good stewards of our property at St. Joan of Arc. This is all possible because of your generous support of the parish. Thank you! I will be away at a conference ( Gone Fishing) from August While I am away there will not be daily mass at St. Joan of Arc. I know the neighboring parishes will welcome those who wish to attend. Also, the priests of our nearby parishes said they would offer help at St. Joan of Arc in the event of an emergency (or a funeral) while I am gone. Thank you priest neighbors! There will be a Pastor s Column in next weekend s bulletin. I generally submit my column on a Monday for the coming Sunday. And so I will turn in a column on Monday August 1 for the August 6-7 bulletin. However, there will not be a Pastor s Column the weekend of August since I will be away from August I hope and pray you are having a peaceful summer and enjoying the beautiful weather. OFFICE OF FAITH FORMATION PSR REGISTRATION Registration Packets for the PSR school year were sent home. Registration Packets are available in the Office of Faith Formation and on our SJA Parish Website: A $10.00 late fee will be charged for each child after June 30, SPECIAL NOTE Two years of sacramental preparation is required. If your child is entering 1 st or 7 th grade and desire to receive the Sacrament of Eucharist and Confirmation the following year, please be sure they are registered in PSR for the school year. ATTENTION PARENTS OF INCOMING 8 TH GRADERS If you wish your teen to be considered as a candidate for the Sacrament of Confirmation for the spring of 2017, and your teen is NOT currently registered in our SJA Parish School of Religion, or St. Joan of Arc Catholic School, please contact Sr. Judy at as soon as possible. 4 St. Joan of Arc Church Back to School Drive St. Joan of Arc parish is partnering with Geauga County Family Services to collect donations of the following school supplies for students in need of assistance. Supplies needed for each child: (please, only new items) 1 pair blunt-end scissors 1 composition book 1 Pack wide ruled notebook paper 1 12 ruler (inches/metric) 1 package #2 pencils, large eraser, small pencil sharpener 1 large pink eraser 1 zipped pencil bag (3 holed, zipper) 1 large glue stick 1 box colored pencils (16 or 24) 1 box of crayons (16 or 24) 3 pocket folders Also collecting New or Gently Used Backpacks Supplies can be dropped off in the Gathering Area before and after Mass.
