2 DATE & SUBJECT February 21, Second Sunday of Lent How good it is for us to be here. (Mark 9:2-10) Consider the subtle transfigurations you have witnessed. A frightened pregnant teenager suddenly looks like a Madonna. A heartfelt letter from a friend begins to seem more and more like an epistle. A grassy field becomes a parable. A beggar is Christ. As your eyes focus on one thing, your heart finds another. The world is charged with the grandeur of God for those who have eyes to see. The three great friends of Jesus saw their friend on the mountain one minute, and the glory of God the next. They had been listening to him and watching him for a long time now. They had seen miraculous healings, demons expelled, crowds moved to astonishment by his words. And now, staring at him, they saw light, authority, and the favor of God. Was this something new, or had it been there before? Had their eyes gotten adjusted at last to the vision of Jesus, leaving their blindness behind them? Since the three did not know what to say on the mountain, Jesus tells them not to say anything at all as they descend. So much can be lost in the transmission of a vision. And a transfiguration is too powerful an image to risk losing it in speech. Explore moments of transfiguration you have known. How have they changed your way of seeing? Application: Think of someone who drives you crazy, someone you are in conflict with, or some group you experience negatively. Pray for a transfiguration in your way of seeing. (Reprinted with permission for God s Word Is Alive 23rd Publication 1998) WELCOME TO ST. JOAN S Grace and peace to you from our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Amen. 3 Greetings of Peace. Pastor s Column Do you already need a boost after 10 days of Lent? This weekend is a perfect time for that. We hear the Gospel reading of The Transfiguration of Jesus. One of the best descriptions I have heard of the Transfiguration is this: The Transfiguration is how someone looks when they are completely filled with the Love of God! In the Transfiguration, God s light showed Jesus in all his glory and as God beloved son. In Lent, we go with Jesus and the disciples up the mountain and witness who Jesus really is. We also are reminded who we are called to be daughters and sons of God and sharers in his glory! This is good news. It is a glimpse of Heaven! Speaking of good news, spring is only one month away! When I think of good news I think of smiling. And smiling can make me think of a good joke. However, I have heard only a few Lenten Jokes. Here s one: A child said to dad, I'm giving up school work for Lent. So the dad said, Okay, then I will give up giving you an allowance. And how s this? Some Reasons Lent is Better Than Christmas No braving the malls looking for Lenten gifts No pressure to send Happy Ash Wednesday or Merry Lent cards No Lenten holiday albums like Andy Williams singing Forty Days & Forty Nights or Johnny Mathis version of Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days No sitcom specials like The Charlie Brown Ash Wednesday Pageant or Hallmark Movies like I Found My Love in Lent No s about the true meaning of Lent, threatening doom if you don t forward them No Ugly Ash Wednesday Sweaters Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return and Repent! are extremely difficult to use in consumer marketing strategies Nobody ever says, Ash Wednesday and Lent are really all about the children If you know of any good Lenten jokes, feel free to pass them along to me! Who knows, I might share them! Finally, we have Stations of the Cross on the Fridays in Lent at 6:30 pm (except Friday March 18); Stations are followed by a Simple Soup Supper. Hope you can join us. Be Blessed on your Lenten Journey, and Peace, Fr. Gary The Transfiguration is how someone looks when they are completely filled with the Love of God! STATIONS OF THE CROSS We will have Stations of the Cross at 6:30 p.m. by members of the staff on February 26 and March 4 & 11 followed by Soup Suppers in the parish hall. CONGRATULATIONS The following SJA parishioners and St. Ignatius students received honors for the first semester: Dominic Conti, Josef O Brien, Christopher Revnew, Matthew Bagley, Robert Crea, William O Brien, Nicholas Pisanelli, John Wiberg, Michael Czaja, Race DePenti and Patrick Koehler.

Julia s project received an Excellent rating. She missed a Superior rating and the chance to move on by 1 point. Way to go, Julia! We are proud of you! The apostles were terrified as they entered the cloud. Every one of us is a constantly-unfolding mystery. When we enter into a relationship with another, we can expect change and we should expect it to be unsettling, for it might require us also to change.
