2 DATE & SUBJECT August 21, 2016 The Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time Try to come in through the narrow door. (Luke 13:22-30) Recently I saw a painting called, The Narrow Gate to Heaven and the wide Gate to Hell. The narrow gate had only two people attempting entrance. They each had an open prayer book and seemed to be praying their way through. Near this entrance was a man peddling crosses with a name printed clearly on each. Pick up your cross was never simpler than this. Meanwhile a crowd milled around the other gate. Men on horses and leaping dogs added to the liveliness of the scene. It was clearly a more attractive entrance, if you could overlook the skeletons that were dancing among them. Looking at a painting like this, I am always impatient to find a third gate somewhere. No, I do not want to dance with skeletons, but I also do not want to imitate the dour piety of portrait saints. I think it is possible to dance with the saints, dance with your cross, dance through the narrow gate all the way to the reign of God. Why should the devil have all the fun? If religious folk looked livelier, perhaps more people would try the narrow door. Application: Create a kindly discipline in your life. Plan to take better care of your body: quit smoking, eat healthy meals, drink less, sleep more. Take unnecessary walks. Waste less time worrying. Spend more time in silence. Love more. Refrain from bitterness. (Reprinted with permission for God s Word Is Alive 23rd Publication 1998) WELCOME TO ST. JOAN S We worship in the name of God, the Maker of heaven and earth; Jesus, the Messiah who teaches us how to serve others; and the Holy Spirit, counselor, comforter, cultivator of faith. Amen. 3 Greetings of Peace. Pastor s Column Summer seems to draw to a close in mid-august as we prepare for another school year (even though summer does not officially end until September 21!). Let s pray for the staff, students, and families of our Day School here at St. Joan of Arc. If you see Ms. Shelley DiBacco, our Day School Principal, or any of our teachers and school support personnel making their way back to get ready for another school year, let them know how grateful we are for their good work. I will assure our school staff of our support and our prayers. We are also preparing for those who participate our Parish School of Religion. Sr. Judy and the Office of Faith Formation (with Sr. Theresa) are hard at work and doing an excellent job! We also pray for all those beginning a new school year, for those going away to school or college, and for those who are beginning a new career or new stage in life. The entire Ministerial Staff of St. Joan of Arc is preparing for another year of activities, meetings, and such alike. However, please continue to take time for rest, relaxation, prayer, and re-creation. These virtues help us become better people. Speaking of virtues, might I mention two virtues in particular? Namely Courtesy and Safety! Might we all be attentive to a few things in our parking lot? Please be courteous and park in the lined parking places at St. Joan of Arc and avoid making our own parking places. We also ask that the designated areas for handicapped parking be respected. Not only is all of this courteous, but parking is necessary in the event emergency vehicles need to come to St. Joan of Arc during masses (or anytime the parking lot is being used). Thank you for your cooperation. Also in our parking lot, please be attentive to drive slowly through the parish lot. This is the virtue of Safety. ALL of us can be attentive to this parishioners, students, staff, faculty, visitors, and everyone! Yes, Safety and Courtesy are virtues as much as Faith, Hope, and Love! We are in the midst of our main parish fundraiser our annual Parish Raffle. Thank you to those who have already purchased tickets and to those who are our active sellers and promoters of this endeavor. We are very grateful! The grand prize is $25,000. Proceeds will go to our parish Organ Fund. Thank you for your support! Be blessed, and Peace. Fr. Gary Annual Appeal goal. Thank you for your generous donations and helping us reach our goal.
