2 DATE & SUBJECT July 24, 2016 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time For whoever asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds. (Luke 11:1-13) If there was ever a cosmic negotiation, it is the Lord s prayer. First, we praise God, then we list our petitions: We need food, please. Oh, and forgiveness and please do not make the temptations harder than we can bear. Amen. In return, we offer the assertion that we also forgive those who do us wrong, and we are nowhere near as just as God. But Jesus knows we are not as good as our intentions. He adds the little story about the man who will not help his neighbor out of friendship but will capitulate in the end out of exasperation. This is more like us. We forgive those who wrong us because it is often more practical to do so. Even psychology tells us that we have a personal investment in forgiveness: it is the healthy choice, over the gradual descent into mental illness which comes from holding a grudge. What makes God God is the God does not need a reason or motivation to forgive us. God shows mercy because it is the nature of love to be merciful. If we ask, if we seek, if we knock, we will be served. That is a cosmic negotiation worth pursuing. Were you ever forgiven a great debt, or money or wrongdoing? How did you respond? What kinds of things do you ask God for when you pray? Application: Pray for an infusion of God s grace in your life, and the life of your community. Petitions for an end to violence, hate, and immorality in our towns and cities. Ask and it shall be given to you: we are promised that from one we can trust. 3 Greetings of Peace. Pastor s Column I hope and pray that you are having a blessed summer. Recently I was talking with some school-age children who told me they were sad that summer is more than half-way finished. Their logic was this: they have been out of school for 6 weeks and return to school in about 5 weeks or so! Summer at St. Joan of Arc is the time for us to prepare for our annual parish raffle. Tickets will be available very soon after all weekend masses. This is the one major fundraiser we have for our parish - and again this year the raffle will have a new tone. All proceeds from our raffle will go in our parish Organ Fund. We have raised almost $30,000 toward the new instrument. The 30+ year old organ has served us well; however its useful life is almost over. Your support of our raffle will help us in this endeavor. The organ committee will look at all this and devise a plan of action! Please stay tuned for more information about the parish raffle and the organ! We appreciate your support and participating in our raffle. The Grand Prize is $25,000. We are in the midst of some work on our parish buildings and grounds. Here is an update on some of the projects in the works. The gym floor was just done. Painting is now taking place. Work on the parking lot is planned. We will level some of the uneven concrete. Flat roofs will receive some attention. More brickwork repair will be done. Some waterproofing is in the plans. The A/C in part of the rectory is being replaced. (The unit that broke was 28 years old!) And more! Yes, we are busy about many things in our parish, and we strive to be good stewards of our buildings, grounds, and property at St. Joan of Arc. This is all possible because of your generous support of the parish. Thank you! The St. Joan of Arc annual Rummage Sale is coming! Donations are being accepted and adults and teens are needed to volunteer. Please go to the parish website to sign up online or see Ms. Melissa Olenik of our parish staff. Thank you for your support! Here is some humor for your soul: There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family Bible to her brother in another part of the country. "Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk. "Only the Commandments" answered the lady! I will be away at a conference ( Gone Fishing) from August While I am away there will not be daily mass at St. Joan of Arc. I know the neighboring parishes will welcome those who wish to attend daily mass while I am way. Also, the priests of our nearby parishes said they would offer help at St. Joan of Arc in the event of an emergency (or a funeral) while I am gone. Thank you. 4 St. Joan of Arc Church Back to School Drive St. Joan of Arc parish is partnering with Geauga County Family Services to collect donations of the following school supplies for students in need of assistance. Supplies needed for each child: (please, only new items) 1 pair blunt-end scissors 1 composition book 1 Pack wide ruled notebook paper 1 12 ruler (inches/metric) 1 package #2 pencils, large eraser, small pencil sharpener 1 large pink eraser 1 zipped pencil bag (3 holed, zipper) 1 large glue stick 1 box colored pencils (16 or 24) 1 box of crayons (16 or 24) 3 pocket folders Also collecting New or Gently Used Backpacks Supplies can be dropped off in the Gathering Area before and after Mass. Thank you for your early return of these registrations and other important forms. Registration Packets are available in the Office of Faith Formation and on our SJA Parish Website: A $10.00 late fee will be charged for each child after June 30, SPECIAL NOTE Two years of sacramental preparation is required. If you have a child entering 1 st or 7 th grade and desire that he/she receive the Sacrament of Eucharist and Confirmation the following year, please make sure to register them in our PSR for this coming school year. ATTENTION ALL PARENTS OF INCOMING 8 TH GRADERS If you wish your teen to be considered as a candidate for the Sacrament of Confirmation for the spring of 2017, and your teen is NOT currently registered in our SJA Parish School of Religion, or St. Joan of Arc Catholic School, please contact Sr. Judy at as soon as possible. FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Jesus was praying. What a powerful example for us! He knew this was the way to stay connected to God the Father and handle all the demands being placed on Him. Jesus assures us if we put God first we will receive and find whatever we need from His infinite goodness and wisdom. But, we must make the time to stop, listen and seek God first in prayer. Pope Francis reminds us moments of family prayer and acts of devotion can be more powerful for evangelization than any catechism class or sermon. Make prayer a daily part of your family routine.
