2 DATE & SUBJECT November 20, 2016 Christ the King This is the King of the Jews. (Luke 23:35-43) Our first reading reminded us that a temporal king is; the hymn from Colossians tells us how the glorified Christ reigns. But in the gospel, we come to understand in brutally practical terms what it costs to be the sovereign Lord of all. It is somewhat poetic and antiseptic theology to say, Christ reconciled everything in his person. It is messier, more poignant to realize that the reconciliation came at the point of a nail piercing skin and bone, while followers looked on silently, leaders jeered, and criminals blasphemed. They called him King of the Jews, and they intended it to be an absurd title. How could this pitiful sight think of himself as the Son of David! He did not bear any sign of God s favor, battered and humiliated as he was. Yet there was one person who saw past the matted hair and bloodstained face to the image of the invisible God. The good thief, as generations would call him, was rewarded for his clear vision with paradise itself. On this last Sunday of the year, we are asked to contemplate the face of a King, so that we will recognize sovereignty when we see it. In our country, we have taken great pains to separate earthly and divine authority. How has this worked for and against us? No power is greater than Jesus Christ. How does this challenge us in our struggle with sin and its effect in our lives? Where do you see the face of Christ the King in the world? How can you best serve this King? Application: Make a list of the things that hold some power (sovereignty) over your life (e.g., financial concerns, the need to please, greed, a lock of forgiveness). Pray over this list, and ask for the grace in Jesus name to be freed from bondage to any power other than our sovereign Lord. (Reprinted with permission for God s Word Is Alive 23rd Publication 1998) WELCOME TO ST. JOAN S Christ the King of all creation, all times and seasons, all that we do as individuals and as the church. Welcome as we gather to worship before the throne. THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY OUR SINCERE AND HUMBLE THANKS American s citizens, especially Christians, can be very grateful that this nation has chosen a time for annually giving thanks. Of course, we know about the pilgrims first celebration with help from their native-american neighbors. But it was George Washington, the father of our

3 From the Pastor Greetings of Peace. As St. Joan of Arc parish is in the midst of our Grateful Giving Program, again this week I present some further reflections on Giving and Stewardship as well as some updates about Grateful Giving in our parish. THANK YOU so much for your generosity and for your faith. GRATEFUL GIVING REFLECTION - SPENDING TIME. Stewardship of time is one of the three interlinked dimensions of our call to stewardship. Just as with our financial resources, we talk about spending time, saving time, and wasting time. But how well do we steward our time, or use it in a way that reflects our gratitude to God for every hour of every day? According to the latest government survey, the average American spends about 5 hours of spare time each day in these activities: hours watching TV --38 minutes socializing and communicating --20 minutes reading --20 minutes using the computer for fun --17 minutes participating in sports, exercise, active recreation --16 minutes relaxing and thinking --20 minutes on other activities (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics) How do you use your leisure time? Where do your priorities lie? How much time do you give back to God -- in prayer, study, volunteering in the parish? Teach us to count our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart. (Psalm 90/12) GRATEFUL GIVING PROGRAM UPDATE. Our Grateful Giving program continues to be very well received by the people of St. Joan of Arc. To date 172 households have increased their weekly contribution in response to the letter sent. This represents a combined weekly increase of close to $1, The average increase in the per family weekly offering is nearly $ If you have not already done so, please use the special Grateful Giving envelope (available in the Gathering Area of the church or the Parish Office) to indicate your new level of giving, and return to your regular envelope packet for succeeding weeks. If you are interested in receiving information on our Electronic Giving Program (Automatic deduction from your checking account), please contact the parish office. Thank you so much. Please note, I am away from the parish, on vacation. I will return for masses on Sunday November 27. While I am away there will not be daily mass at St. Joan of Arc. However, we will have mass on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday November 24, at 9:00 am. Also, the priests of our neighboring parishes are kind enough to cover any emergencies or funerals at St. Joan while I am away. Thank you, Fathers! Blessings and Peace. You are in my heart and in my prayer. Fr. Gary country, who issued the first official presidential proclamation. Washington assigned the fourth Thursday in November to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. He called upon the people to offer our sincere and humble thanks to God. He also asked the citizens to pray to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations that God might pardon our national and other transgressions.

THE GIVING TREE For the past 20+ years, our parish has generously given many gifts and gift cards to needy people. Your kindness has been wonderful! The tree is in the Gathering Area and will St. Joan of Arc Catholic School News By Mrs. Shelley DiBacco, School Principal Faith. Academics. Excellence Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and to be thankful for all of the gifts that God has given to us. God has blessed us in so many ways. Although life is filled with many challenges, this is the time of year we are grateful for the kind people in our lives who love and support us so that our students believe, achieve, and succeed. I am personally thankful for my family, my friends, my faith, and the fine folks (staff, students, and families) here at St. Joan of Arc School. Our school is a blessing to all who work and attend and we have much for which to be thankful. We are truly fortunate and blessed with a dedicated staff who besides the school day hours put countless hours in on their personal time to develop lesson plans, grade papers and continue their education. They choose to teach in a Catholic school because they know our school makes a difference in their lives and they make a difference to each child. We are blessed with Father Gary J. Malin who believes in St. Joan of Arc School and in Catholic education and who has dedicated himself to passing on the Good News to our students. We are blessed with dedicated families who do so much for our school and to promote education in the lives of their children. We are blessed with a wonderful Parent Teacher Organization. This organization made of parent volunteers, works endlessly to support our faculty, students, and each other. I have experienced their dedication, creativity and love for the SJA community. It is due to the efforts of the PTO that we can provide activities such as the Christmas Bazaar, staff Professional Development, class parties, field trips and countless other events. This Thanksgiving, as you gather together with your family and friends for your Thanksgiving meal, as you laugh and play, please remember to also pray together to reflect on the many blessings God has bestowed upon you and your family. Pray for those that are less fortunate, the sick and the dying and those that are serving in the armed forces away from their family. Let us not only be thankful one day a year on Thanksgiving, but celebrate the greatness of our God with thanks to Him EVERYDAY! May the Lord bless you and fill you with peace. On behalf of Father Gary J. Malin, and our faculty & staff, I would like to extend our warmest wishes to each family for a Happy Thanksgiving. remain there until Giving Sunday, December 11th. The Giving Tree went up earlier this year because some of the organizations needed the gifts by December 16th. It will be decorated with tags that describe where the gift is needed, the kind of gift desired and perhaps the name of the person. Please take a tag, purchase the gift, WRAP THE GIFT and ATTACH THE TAG TO THE OUTSIDE of the package. SPECIAL NOTE: Not all gifts are to be wrapped. Some of the organizations requested unwrapped gifts and it is stated on the tag. IF BUYING A GIFT CARD, PLEASE MARK THE AMOUNT ON THE TAG. Please bring the gift to the Giving Sunday celebration in the parish hall before or after each Mass on December 11th or gifts can be dropped off in the parish office before December 11th. Please call the parish office ( ) with questions.
